I'm genuinely impressed that a single McDonald's cup can hold drinks for nearly a whole year, at least when left idle. I wish I didn't see the orange juice and the soda grow mold inside of them, though.
Because it's not paper. There is a plastic lining inside, which ironically makes it very difficult to recycle as the plastic can't reliably be separated.
@@curious_banda The said plastic lining is very very thin, even if we couldn't recycle it effectively, the plastic lining would probably decompose pretty fast together with the cup
Saying it held for almost a year might be a bit of an overstatement. It started to leak out the bottom around the 20-30 day mark. I can confirm that's accurate, being a lazy gamer slob, I have also encountered these cups reaching their breaking point.

@@ТопСтрелокМираБлитц I think that might be it, because I don't believe it's possible for a camera to continuously record something for a year uninterrupted.
Nah, what really happened is he had some sort of technology that can record, I’m guessing a phone or camera and set it up, not sure if he ever moved the camera or phone because he could of just turned it on and took a picture or went to the camera app and took a picture there. Or did move the phone/camera but kept putting it back. But yeah, he didn’t hold the camera for that long, he would need to eat, drink, sleep, extra, and unless he is an alien there is no way in hell he would be able to not move for almost a year. Plus, there are just 200 pictures, he probably didn’t just stand there and take pictures, he took pictures when he thought about it. But he could have paid or gotten multiple people to stand there for him and switch out like a job, so maybe you are right...but he would have to be pretty loaded to afford that so, not sure Jude.
Coke has sugar (except the Zero brand) so mold can grow there. And paper itself is composed of cellulose, the complex form of carbohydrate. Altough it's need time, cellulose can decompose to glucose (the simpler form of carbohydrate) so mold can grow from the paper too.

Paper cup after holding orange juice for a year: still holds up surprisingly well despite the juice literally having rotted away and molded over Paper straw after 2 minutes of use: *completely disintegrated* Edit: holy shit I don't care that paper cups have plastic coatings, it was a fucking joke.
@@TheFirstBigCheese Yup, though there are paper cups without the plastic coating that hold liquid surprisingly well for enough time to finish drinking it. I sometimes stop by a wholefoods type store on my way to work to pick up a cup of coffee and their cups are uncoated and hold up well. Obviously, the better alternative is to bring your own cup, but equally obviously, at the moment, that is not an option.
Its healthier that the paper straw falls apart. This experiment probably proved that their cups are essentially a plastic bag coated in water repellants, wrapped around a paper core.

That is fascinating. I didn't realize they had an outer coating. At the beginning of the century, they used to leak pretty quickly, after about a day or so. They used to line their cups with wax, and they usually lasted pretty good. They didn't even soak into the paper. I guess, now is a good compromise. They moved the coating from the inside to the outside. I suppose that protects the surroundings without leaking the liner into the drink for a good long time. (presumably well after is has been disposed of)
It would be interesting to see how long the cup would last filled with salt water to emulate being washed out to sea. The most detrimental factor that these cups contribute to waste pollution is the sanitary plastic liner that doesn't degrade easily or in any appreciable amount of time.
It'd have to be stirred constantly since the salt would separate from the water over time. Might be worth putting one of those cups into a jug of salt water that gets shaken daily.

Great video!
All paper cups used everywhere (including coffee cups) use plastic liners, and they’re not recyclable because the plastic and paper are too difficult to separate. Spread the word.
@@lexilovescheesesticks8503 because you can't have paper mixed in with the plastic when you melt it down to make something new. It will make the plastic too low quality to actually make stuff out of it. In general, the first thing done at a recycling plant is separating what they receive by material. This is relatively easy when it's just "paper in that bin, plastic in the other." But the cost is too high when you're talking about thin layers of different materials glued together like in cups. It's technically possible, but it would be far more expensive than the value of the materials. That sort of stuff just ends up being sorted into the trash anyway, and it creates more unnecessary work when it's put in the recycling bin. It is always best to use a reusable travel mug.
@ordinary name I agree, up to a point. It's true that the difference of any given consumer's choices are directly negligible, but I don't think they're unimportant. The only way for there to be change is for there to be a culture change. Any sort of policy to reduce waste is difficult to get implemented, but it's downright impossible without popular support. And humans are social creatures, the more we see people in our community avoiding waste, the more we understand it as a popular value. No, I don't think consumers should individually feel guilt for the systems that were created by others with power, but I think it is still important to actively try to create a culture shift away from single-use, disposable waste. Both in ourselves, and our peers.

But yes it is certainly mind blowing that he was able to remember such a thing. Maybe I’m the dumb one but I’m pointing fingers and you Jude because that’s scientifically impossible. I greatly appreciate the fact that you dealt with the smell, suffered through the fly and gnat breeding ground that was that cup, dealt with that mess afterwards and took the time to both film an interesting time lapse and expose the Golden Arches for using plastic liners in their “paper” cups. Great video!
All paper cups used everywhere (including coffee cups) use plastic liners, and they’re not recyclable because the plastic and paper are too difficult to separate. Spread the word.
@@ericeaton2386 but both plastic and paper are recyclable, so why do they need to be separated
This is actually true they say its good for the enviorment but there still is plasic on it

Not paper thlugh that's why it held for so long
It's bit plastic if you see at almost the end of the video
My man just spent 7 months filming this cup. He could have milked a 20 minute video out of this, and made 10 times as much money.
But no. He made a 100% straight to the point 3 minute video, just showing what happened, no bloat, no clickbait, no useless narration (good narration is fine and appreciated, but talking just to fill the space? Please don't.)
Mad respect.
@flowerpetal But we'll let that slide since it was only like 3 seconds and it was a tiny thing in the corner that didn't interrupt the video.
I think the term respect is being used loosely here. Respect, doctors, firemen and nurses not a dude that left a camera on record for months
@@epm3929 respect is respect. Don't be that guy, and don't compare people
@flowerpetal Why would you blame them for that though? It is genuinely something that is recommended for youtubers to do, it REALLY helps to ask people to subscribe/like, it's been shoown time and time aagain
@@epm3929 So you're saying we can't say respect to someone who dedicated for something interesting like this? I mean yes of course respect to them. And of course respect to this guy who took the time to set all this up so we can see. The editing was probably long (look at description). I don't see why you had to point that out.
What location/Country is this? The paper cups at Macca's in New Zealand don't last more than 2 days before the bottom is moulding and leaking
