There's a reason why all the female singers look and listen to her recordings because she is the standard that has yet to be surpassed. For me, Gobbi invested too much into coming accross as a bully. I think smoothly deceptive is more appropriate. After all, he literally slips into Tosca's space and psyche in act 1, then, he builds toward his conquest through threat, barbarousness, and finally outright attempted rape in act 2.
