I was fortunate recently to have a chance to see Gordon Lightfoot at the Rebecca Cohn in Halifax with some close family members . Gordon is 81years old I believe , and everybody loved him , he was amazing. He sang this song and talked about Elvis singing this . He was very happy Elvis covered this . They are both amazing entertainers . Lots of time spent listening to them both in my life .

This is such an underrated song!!! Where are the ELVIS FANS? I'm sure it didn't get the radio time it deserved....... of course there are alot of them that didn't.............
In Canada - because of the Canadian Content rules, and the fact Orillia, Ontario's Gordon Lightfoot wrote it - "Early Morning Rain" got a lot of airplay, especially on oldies stations many years after it was recorded.
This guy was destined for super stardom. He had vocals that never quit.
Destined for super stardom ?????? Come again. You must be fairly young and not aware of how huge he was in his time. Like Muhammad Ali his potential best years were taken away by the military draft. Never the less I'd put him right up there as a music icon easily equal to Sinatra, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and anyone else that you name., He covered many genres of music brilliantly as none of them did. Brother Ray Charles covered many genres as well but not to the extent that this guy did. Bone up on your musical history son.

I remember sitting in a 1965 Chevy impala in 1971 at night in the rain thinking about my beautiful girl friend listening to the radio it was the first time I ever heard Elvis Presley sing. He was singing trying to get to you. I knew then and there I had to find out who this guy was. I’ve been listening to him ever since.
