19:10 Yes! You should use it wisely! Maraming aspiring writers ang naglalagay ng mga dialogue tags na super flowery. Honestly speaking, you DON'T HAVE TO use different dialogue tags all the time such as "said, exclaimed, asked replied, sabi, wika, sambit," at kung ano-ano pa. It is best for you to stick to "said" at "sabi" because it seems to be invisible to the readers, at magiging maayos ang flow ng conversation ng characters niyo. Kumbaga 80% ng dialogue tags mo, "said" at "sabi" lang. The rest, you can use whatever you want. DIALOGUES TAGS AREN'T NECESSARY ALWAYS! Minsan naaabuso natin ang mga ito-tadtad na ng mga dialogue tags ang bawat dayalogo ng kuwento. You shouldn't do it, it will only slow down the pace of the conversation; papanget ang flow ng conversations ng characters mo.
Hi Demi, thank you for this video ❤️ Next video(s) suggestion po sana: about different punctuation marks, their uses, and examples of their uses in the narrative. Thanks heaps ❤️
Thank you so much for this.
Next vlog suggestion po 'How to manage time when youre studying and at the same time writing a story' para po sa mga gustong magsulat o magsusulat pero nag aaral, hehe suggestion lang po.
Hi! I'm new to your channel and would like to place down my opinions on the topic. To my knowledge, I think rule No.6 is incorrect, and I'd like to clarify some things and assist fellow writers. Usually, dialogue interrupted by an action beat would go thusly: (British convention) 'If that is the case' -- Elise returned his glance -- 'then I'm afraid, monsieur, you are correct. I do criticise your art.' There is no comma nor full stop (period) before the interruption. The punctuation goes at the end of the dialogue. (American convention) "If that is the case"--Elise returned his glance--"then I'm afraid, monsieur, you are correct. I do criticize your art." The punctuation is the same with the British convention. The only difference is that the former uses an en dash rather than em dash. I prefer the en dash over the latter because it's more soothing to the eyes. We usually don't use commas -- such as those in your examples -- as we are not using a speech verb. 'Don't', she turned to window, 'don't argue with me.' If the above example were correct, it would imply that she's turning her words to the window as opposed to implying disapproval. Commas before an interruption indicates that a speech tag will follow and not an action beat. Correct: 'Don't' -- she turned to the window -- 'don't argue with me.' Another example: Correct: 'But, Inspector' -- Evelyn hiccuped. Her cries echoed on the walls around her. Finally, as silent air swept the room; she wiped her eyes, leaving dark stains on the tissue -- 'I had no affair with that man. You see, I am innocent and always will be.' Although Wattpad sometimes uses informal writing, as you've mentioned somewhat, allowing a wider space for creativity (taglish, ...., bold letters or capitalisation for effect) -- I understand, and I do not belittle the writers of the website -- I think it's best that we also train ourselves to conform with the formalities of fiction writing and apply the correct rules. It will help aspiring writers look professional, especially when we choose to go down the traditional publishing route of another country or the Big 4. I also advice against using 'asked' or 'tanong' since it's repetitive. 'Where are we going?' he asked. In the dialogue above, it's unnecessary to use the action tag because the reader is aware that the character is asking a question. I agree with you about the use of flowery dialogue tags and that they should be use sparingly or at the appropriate moment. Stephen King also recommends this. Said is not dead, and they mostly come out as invisible to the reader unless each page is littered with a ton of he said and she said! As for anyone having problems with commas and comma splices (It's normal. I still commit mistakes even up to this day!), I recommend consulting a style manual or guide. Our professor in creative writing recommends writers to have one because it helps clarify the usage. Sometimes the use of a comma differs in each manual, such as whether or not to use an Oxford comma, thus; writers often get confused whenever they read a ton of books. In some books we see: 'Of chocolates, wine and money.' In some books we also see: 'Of chocolates, wine, and money.' This makes us dubious about which is right or wrong. Turns out both are acceptable (though publisher gets the final say). With a style guide, we can stick with one style only. Trust me! To anyone struggling with commas and punctuation, I really recommend a style guide. Their explanations are elaborate. It's not only punctuation that differs in each style guide. Some, like the Oxford Manual, suggests that numbers 1-100 should be in their word form whilst above 100 shouldn't be. Others suggests that numbers 1-10 should be in their word form whilst anything above are the opposite. Another example is the apostrophe case: Others say: The James' house Some say: The James's house I'll name a few style guides. Hopefully they'd help: Chicago Manual of Style Ap Style New Hart's Rule or Oxford Style Manual (I use this) Guardian's Style guide There is usually a free pdf. (Again, the final say goes to the publisher, but they'll thank you if they see that you don't randomly switch from 'I love Oxford commas' to 'Oxford commas merely promote ambiguity' throughout your whole manuscript.
