My next bike will be a single speed belt drive for grocery runs, etc.
@@hoolydooly5072 I live where it's flat as a pancake. I can imagine what it's like to have hills. The only "hill" I have is an overpass going over an interstate highway about 15 miles from my home.
@@hoolydooly5072 No point. I was just telling you additional info why I want a single speed. If there were hills near me, I'd probably go with the e-bike.
Why? You're taking away a lot of the fun of single speed by adding belt. You aren't going to have that feeling of instant engagement and fast acceleration on belt.
There is no practical difference on single speed system with belt,problems/resistance begins only with hub gearboxes@@___Bebo___
@@___Bebo___Why is that? Please explain, I never heard about that.
Me and my wife have belt drives with rohloff speedhubs on our touring bikes and it's absolutely amazing. Ridiculously wide range of gears, easy shifting from top to bottom gear, mud proof, no constant cleaning etc. Don't think I could go back to a derailleur now
I have 4 bikes and 3 of them are belt drive. Ive never had to replace the belt. the only one with a chain is an entry level MTB so it's basically just to mess around.
You've nailed the difference. Thanks for putting this out there for those of us who were confused as to go for chain or belt. 👍🏽
Love my belt drive, 11spd Shimano Alfine hub, commuter. Johnny K, IHG doesn’t have to be twist shifting, think that’s just Rohloff, my Shimano setup is just like Deore shifters I’d say. It’s not for everything though so all my other bikes still have chains.
I love my belt drive/8spd internal for commuting. I live in an apartment, and riding all winter, commuting in Boston, without ever cleaning a chain is a huge win. I have another bike I ride for fun or when I want to keep up with a group and it has a chain.
What's the make and model of it. The dealers keep on recommending $2,500+ full suspension eBikes to me and if I'm going to do that then I might as well go electric then. Preferably an electric assist so that I can still exercise and rely on the electric side of it. I'm in N.H.
Big difference is cost. An IGH is more expensive upfront than derailleur but in the long term can save you from having to constantly replace the chain. I have an Enviolo on my e-bike and all I have to do is twist up and down.
Doesn't a chain + derailer drive lose efficiency as soon as it gets a little bit dirty? Wouldn't this make both drives about equally efficient pretty soon?
I feel like these guys clean their chain every 8 hours like it's antibiotics. Being as lazy as I am, I do prefer my belt drive and no cleaning.
@@caniggiafuli like GCN but their content is targeted at roadies who keep their $10k bikes inside and put them into their cars to go on a ride. i leave my steel commuter outside overnight every single day. my chain is starting to rust. wouldn't be a problem on a belt drive
No, belt drive is rubbery feeling too, it eats up your watts. It's good on fully loaded touring bikes only.
thanks guys as i did wonder which was better or rather when they would be better to use
Can anybody answer me, why my belt drive rattles and not runs smoothly, when I use 1 or second gear from Alfine8s ?
Is it tensioned properly…
twist shifter is a deal breaker for me. twist shifter is a pain to use in urban setting where shift is used frequently to navigate traffic/obstacles and frequent stop-n-go.
My Priority Apollo belt drive has a shift lever (instead of twist) and it's a blast ♥️
Shimano Alfine has a trigger shifter. So even with a Gates drivetrain and an internal hub you can still get a proper shifter.
why? i use my 3-speed internal with grip shifter every day in the city and have had zero problems with gears
My Pinion on a Tout Terrain has brake lever shifters on the drop bars.
Belts do work better but e-bikes got a motor and batteries so they are heavier and clunky.
My belt drive is not on an e-bike.
