I'm 29, single and don't have $300 to pay a brake shop to change my rear brake pads and rotors, so I'm going to do it myself. Your video showed me what to expect and purchase, so I feel confident that I can do it. Thank you for making this video. I'll let you know how it all turns out.
Forgot to mention to open the cap on the brake fluid reservoir so the pressure doesn’t build up when you spin the piston back on the caliper. Good video though!
Beautifully done. I wish other videos I'v watched were as well done as this one. It's refreshing to see someone who knows what their doing sharing their knowledge. Kudos my friend.
Totally helped me out man! I'm retro-fitting a older 79-91 Ford 8.8 to disc brakes and your video cleared up a few technical questions I had about the brakes and seeing it all come together! Great work, keep Em coming!
That screw tool was the correct thing. I was going to use the old c clamp method. Can that be done or send you back to the parts store for a new caliper
You watch these videos sometimes and the people suck at explaining the details. I mean, some folks are just the worst teachers. Yeah, they get an E for effort but, that's where it stops. Your video though, was GREAT!!!!!!!! You broke it down from A to Z and I appreciate your time and effort. Instant sub and I will be looking at those other mustang videos on your playlist. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for this video. I have a friend who is coming over to fix them. But, I am gonna try to have them disassembled for him. That way he can basically put the pads and rotors back on. Also gonna replace a stuck disk brake caliper on the passenger front. Thanks agin for the information !
I'm having a lot of trouble putting the caliper back on. It seems as thought the piston is back as far as it will go, since no matter how much I spin it, it doesn't seem to be making any more progress and It's back as far as yours seemed to be. However, when I put on an old brake pad on the front, since it is much thinner, I am able to fit the caliper onto the rotor. I have been working on this for hours. Any help??
4thatdude1 the rear brakes are tricky because you have to spin them. But as long as you get the piston back in far enough to put the pads in they should go on, unless somehow you have the wrong brake pads. Make sure the piston is almost flush when it is spun in. I hope you get it.
Ahhhh.......makes sense. Thanks for that little nugget. When you mentioned something about some instruction manuals suggesting using *needle nose pliers*, I thought to myself: WTF?!? Then I realized they were probably needed so that you could jam them into your skull and end it all after you realize that these rear brake cylinders don't just retract straight back with even pressure.............but that they screw back into position .......now that DOES make me wonder how they *unscrew* themselves to make contact with the brake pads when pressure is applied to the brake pedal. I will investigate this phenomenon further........as I have no life and am waiting delivery on my 2002 premium convertible to arrive from NJ.
Yep i know, I never would have thought they would have had this design on an American car from that year. A lot of foreign cars have that design on the rear. not sure why.
It's easier to depress the piston in by opening the bleeder valve and let the brake fluid go through a funnel and a bottle. Otherwise you're pushing the fluid back into the brake lines.
Thanks for the video. It boosted my confidence. I just want to know what is the bigger clip for? I didn't see you install it and I never saw an old one when I removed mine. Thanks.
The clips I think you are talking about are the ones that are there to make noise when your brake pads are low. Sometimes people install them and sometimes people don't.
Good video. It looks like you forgot to install the little butterfly plate thing that clips into the caliper casing. You point to it and even pick it up at 3:55, but you don’t install it. It is needed to allow the little wires coming off the pads to slide against smooth metal instead of the rough caliper casting.
Pet Rock's Garage You are correct, For some reason I didn't show it in the video, not sure why. I did install them on the caliper though. Thanks for letting me know.
Really flip flops?! Extremely well done video comprehensive and detailed information, flip flops? Really? Don't loose a toe ,I know someone who wore them all of the time even when working, and he played it down, until he chopped the end of his toe off ,dropping a brake drum off the back of a Ford truck
Yeah.. The breaks were done on mine before I recieved, about 14months ago. There's been a squeal? when I breaked, so I greased everything up. I decided to hit the break to compress the piston, th@ was not the best idea. I could not reset the piston for the longest time - bled the TOP Valve, & WA-LA! My last car (GP) only had 1 bleeder! 😅😩 Now I'm rollin' great!
Tried this today and was almost done when I realized I didn't have the clips for the brake pads, they weren't in the box and the old ones didn't have them on them either! So back to Advanced I went. Also how do you know when the piston is fully compressed? I turned and turned mine and it never got tight.
This video helps a lot. I still need to do my passenger side. And I had to take off a small spring so I could reach the bolt in the bottom. Do you know what that spring was for?
I think the spring you are referring to is a spring that keeps tension on the emergency brake cable. You need to make sure you put that back on. Glad I could help, thanks for watching! Also what year mustang do you own?
Awesome, did my rear brakes the other day. Had to pound the crap out of one rotor rusted shut on the hub, nothing about 5 mins with a dead blow hammer couldn't fix! This process also fixed my constant-on brake warning light on the dash cluster. Saved a ton of money! Excellent video, thanks Dane!
you do have to open the brake fluid reservoir, and remove 60 to 80 ccs of brake fluid, otherwise as you compress the piston the brake fluid will go all over your floor.
..I tried using Needle-Nose to turn the piston, it didn't work. Next time (when I upgrade the rotors) I will hopefully be able to buy the specific tool. 😉🖒
+Tr1ppyDJ4L.A. The tool is the only way to go! My pistons were hard AF to turn even with the tool, I couldn't imagine with needlenose pliers. They have it at O'Reilly for about $60 deposit, fully refundable. Protip: use cash so you don't have to wait 3-5 business days for your card to be refunded.
GOOD video. Got a question for you. Is there an easier way to get the E-brake spring back on the caliper? It popped off, and now I'm having trouble getting it back on. I did this same job a couple of years back, with the same problem. I eventually got the spring back into place ( an hour or so) after dikkin with it. Do they have a specific tool for this? Arthritis is preventing me from using my first method.
I have a 03 mustang gt.. I just recently installed a SR performance cold air intake. Also, looking to buy a short throw shifter, possibly stage 2 cams to give it that classic muscle car sound.
oh cool! Good mods, Yep I am trying to decide on what to do. Probably get a cold intake too, and maybe a chip. I have to see what the best bang for the buck will be.
At 3:46, where does that bigger clip go? I got one with a hardware kit but I didn't see one coming off when I took them apart.... and you didn't seem to put it on.
@@mr.ed2092 Hrm, doesn't look like he put it in there... ? Took mine off to replace them got the hardware kit and came with that clip... but mine didn't have that anywhere, is why I'm asking.
If you have tools, then all you have to do is pull the tool box next to you and pull out the size you need. It is quite possible the job you are working on is different.....genius
Diego Estrada Yes it can be very tricky and hard to put back in. Try spraying WD or PB blaster on it if they are rusted up brakes, This might help them go in a little easier.
I did the exact intructions. Lol but for my test run to the gas station and back. My back tires went up in smoke and the rims are hot to the touch. What could be the cause of this?
a month ago i put new breaks on and a new caliper and just this morning the out side break pad was so wore down the metal part of the pad fell of . i made sure i bleed the brakes any idea why it would wear so fast just on that side? any help would be awesome

I've taken it back off a few times and tried to resolve it, but it still does the same thing, and it cracked the pads from getting so hot.
The420Smokey420 Are you sure they are not rubbing? Is the caliper tight on the pads? Does the wheel spin freely when you put everything back together? I hope the piston is till working ok

I crack the bleeder valve and let the fluid out that way. I have lost 3 master cylinders after forcing brake fluid backwards through the lines.
This video makes it look 100 times easier than it actually is.
well thank you, but just watch it a few times.
Lmao “grab the rotor and pull it straight off” is probably the funniest thing I’ve ever heard
ha ha!
definitely stepped up my mustang game because of your videos haha. thanks for all the help

I guess I am not sure if there is a tool or not for this. There might be one in a kit you can get from advanced auto or oreilly auto
I just used a pair of needle nose pliers and a lot of force, I got the cables to go back in. I'd rather not have to go through it again though.
Great video! Any plans for some videos on performance mods?
oh good idea, I need to, but I am wondering what to do first. Any suggestions?

the clamp?
@@TheRykerDane the one you said we can rent at any auto place. You didnt say the name i was curious what it was.

wanna lube the caliper slide pins?
You can but you don't have to
thanks by the way what did you use to clean the tire rim?
george miranda I use Mean Green. or a similar product will work too.

Are the clips required or a necessity?
Did you have the E brake on while both rear wheels was off the ground ?
no I didn't
Im having alot of trouble trying to put the break piston in using the tool. Its too hard to twist it in. How can i make if smooth?
Diego Estrada Yes it can be very tricky and hard to put back in. Try spraying WD or PB blaster on it if they are rusted up brakes, This might help them go in a little easier.
Bro WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much brake grease lol. Less is more with that stuff. Too much will sling it all over ur rotors
You don't mention the guide pins you have to check make sure there in good condition and grease them ptoperly
I did the exact intructions. Lol but for my test run to the gas station and back. My back tires went up in smoke and the rims are hot to the touch. What could be the cause of this?
Did you wipe the brake cleaner off after spraying the fuck out of it?
What about the parking brake cable
Yeah that’s what I was thinking too I saw another vid. Where a guy was putting a hose clamp on the brake hose and bleeding the break as he went.
no need for this since it is mechanical. It doesnt use brake fluid
anybody know good brakes, rotors and calipers to buy for a 2002 mustang gt?
is it 100 ft lbs for all models between 94-04?
Yes thats a general guide for those years. Might be different with other wheels
TheRykerDane Ok thanks. I plan on getting a Mustang GT in those years. I'll probably stay with stock wheels because it will be my first car.
XxAdamIsChaosxX you need to get some ccw rims brah
Again... thanks!
You are welcome, hope it helped!
I didn't know that you need that tool to push that Piston in auto parts here rent it for 60 bucks
Where does the large clip go?
With this method there’s no need to bleed the brake system correct?
yes true
Good stuff..
you are welcome!
What's the tool called for the rear brakes?
just a caliper compression wrench/tool. You can rent from auto parts store
Why does my 1998 Ford Mustang seem to have allen wrench bolts and a rubber boot on another one that doesn't seem to want to come off
You don’t take those off for the caliper. Unless someone swapped out the factory bolts for Allen wrench bolts which they shouldn’t have.
how do you remove the handbrake line????

the metal clip is for making a sound when they are low
TheRykerDane I mean metal plate go on top hole of caliper it press on brake pad spring
Hate that you didnt pull clean and regrease the break pins. Like you suppose to instead of smearing it all over the pads
What's the name of tht tool u used to put in the brake caliper tried twisting it but didn't go in with big plyers
