For people of color it’s literally been taxation without representation this entire time. From 1619 until this very day. I’ve never looked at it from that perspective before. I’ve always been a proponent of reparations, just never heard it put like that before. Very enlightening man, Mr. Harriot.
When emancipation happened with ending slavery the African Americans were freed...but not having any financial wealth/ property ownership. They literally started Freedom with nothing! I never gave this any thought until someone explained it. (I'm one of those white guys BTW).
Update: Trump lost.
@Michele Educate yourself on the history of America, not just the black history
I love Michael Harriot, he is full of wisdom, how i wish he will run for a leadership position.
“Durh white people are goin to white duurrh” super eloquent, much smart.
@Marcus Heller he’s a racist! Doesn’t that matter??
I really liked hearing him! He doesn't really make a whole lot of new points, but he puts them differently, puts them in a historical point of view and makes me see deeper !! Always love your interviews. Hoping the best for election day, love from Europe!

Harriot is so sensible. I never understand people lumping a group of people [Latinos, Black, etc] into a homogenous group who all vote the same,--any more than you'd lump all whites into a group who all vote the same way.
He does this to a certain extent because of how analysis works. When analyzing data about groups of individuals one looks at patterns and why they happen. Nobody actually believes that groups of people are that homogenous. When people look at data and statistics they study patterns in certain categories. Here, Harriot is saying that most black people will not vote for Trump. If someone says "black people vote democrat", they of course don't mean all of them. They mean that the large majority of black voters tend to vote democrat. although most know that individuals are different and that diversity is a thing, when referring to groups of things/people, people usually generalize in their speech.
we make up roughly 14 percent of the population and have been told for years that things would change for the better. Never happened. White folks are the only ones who will benefit. Even under the Obama administration there were no positive improvements. They dont care about us. We need to care about each other by supporting black businesses, building black hospitals (so that THEY can no longer attentionally kill us), we must STOP being criminals and start abiding ny the rules as a collective, we need to stop glorifying Baby Mama culture and work on having structured family homes. Voting has never helped us an d WILL NEVER BENEFIT US
@Teri Hannigan you obviously no nothing about this racist. Check out anything he’s written, it’ll be a tough slog, and get out a pencil and piece of paper and count how many times he uses the term “white people”. Then substitute the phrase “black people” and see what you got!

His explanation and argument for reparations is so spot on and clear. Like affirmative action, reparations is another issue where a simplistic, superficial opinion based on either an inability or unwillingness to think critically about the issue can easily make white people feel like they are somehow (absurdly) being punished for society simply leveling the playing field after the entire history of this country has suppressed the ability for black Americans to build any kind of generational wealth when they have contributed to and sacrificed unimaginably for this country.

Reparations is just a down payment on justice for American Descendants of Slavery's future. It's a past due debt for people with a unique identity and a specific lineage.
Slavery's future??? I think we need a new idea other than reparations. I don't think reparations is an idea that would work. Maybe something more along the lines of love.

I’m lost what 400 years of slavery I hear some people talks about? Because the U.S isn’t even 300 years old... what did I miss? Anybody educate me please...
Slavery was here prior to America gaining independence and becoming a sovereign nation. The first African slaves were brought here in the early 1600s.
Slavery in the "New World" started in 1518, the United States of America wasn't established until 1776. Slavery was abolished with the 13th Amendment in 1865. 1865-1920 Following the American Civil War, hundreds of thousands of African Americans were re-enslaved in an abusive manipulation of the legal system called “peonage.” Across the Deep South, African-American men and women were falsely arrested and convicted of crimes, then “leased” to coal and iron mines, brick factories, plantations, and other dangerous workplaces. The formal peonage system slows down after World War I but didn't fully end until the 1940s, although in the south African Americans were still enslaved as recently as the 1960's, as in the case of Mae Louise Walls Miller, who didn't get her freedom until 1963, when she was about 14.
@@apoetsmile3956 thank you for the information but when we say slaves or Africans what did these people look like & according to slavevoyage.org & other sites... only or less than 300,000 African slaves came to North America... 1500 that would’ve been Spaniards... right? So why they say 1619? my research says the Americas is the old world ...maybe I’m wrong... hummmm..
Educate yourself, open up a book. It’s up to you to learn and grow as an individual. If you were to ask for a good starting point or reference I could help you out but we (the People of the internet are not a legitimate source of knowledge) it can be as simple as typing in “when did slavery start in America” into Wikipedia (they always have their references at the bottom) and go from there. It’s intellectually lazy to just ask a question to random people. It gives off the impression that you really don’t care about it beyond the one question.

Old World history: Africa, Asia, and Europe-continents with ancient beginnings and places known before the exploration of the Americas. New World history: North America, Central America, and South America. The term New World was developed in 1492 when Christopher Columbus arrived in "America".
Yes, 1619 marks a record of more than 20 enslaved Africans being brought to Jamestown. It was in 1518 when slave ships were decreed direct passage from Africa to the "New World" by King of Spain Charles I. Portugal was well established in slavery by the mid-1400's.
All of this information is out there for you to learn and verify, it's not just my history it's our history.
I’m all for reparations. And every nation involved during the 16th century slave trade. Should help split the bill. I think it was Portugal that took the first ship of Africans to America.
I don't think you got the point he was making. Reparations are not a punishment for the crime of slavery. Reparations should be seen as the reclamation of the wealth black people have produced with their labor for the country.
@@reginanegra every nation should pay them for their sweat equity. I don’t see what point I missed. It’s my point of view.
@@8arrows the "equity" they created was for America.... Portugal made no profit from it other than the original sale price. Your point of view does not agree with his. You are talking about reparations as a punishment. You are both entitled to your views I am just pointing out that they differ.
@@reginanegra again I'm not trying to agree or disagree with his point. I. Making my own point. Btw portugal didn't just do one sale. There were thousands of transactions. I don't know why u and me are having this debate. They were wronged should be paid. And so should native americans. The stole the land from them to put slaves to work. That land is equity too.
@@8arrows Ah I see. Because of the wording I thought you meant you agreed with his idea of reparations, that's why I said you missed the point about reparations not being punitive. I completely agree that Native Americans were, as screwed, if not worse than African Americans. The only reason I give a slight edge to his interpretation is because I think it will be easier for white folks to accept reparations without being resentful for being punished for something their ancestors did.

Reparations couldn't apply to all white Americans though. They'd have to be paid by the families who had relatives that partook in slavery. There's people whose families only came here in the past 70 years or so.
It wouldn’t pertain to any families. It’s paid by the country. And if you’re a citizen you’d pay taxes to support the reparations
It is not about people, it is about a system 🤦🏼♀️
If you had listened you'd have noticed that it wasn't just about the injustices made during slavery. Even the time up to the sixties where black people were forced to be taxed while at the same time being systematically being shut off from going to certain college, moving in to certain neighborhoods even playing sports at an athletic level etc.
We all want justice and equity and that is because we were created in the image and likeness of God and God is righteous and all His ways are right but we have sin and rebelled against God. We have a conscience and we know right from wrong but choose to do wrong when we lie, steal, fornicate, are proud, selfish, hate etc... We all have broken the law of God and God is just to punish us all but in His love and mercy He sent down His only begotten Son Jesus Christ the Righteous and Savior to die on the cross for our sins and in our place that we be not condemned and then He was resurrected on the third day and is sitting at the right hand of God, We have to repent of our evil ways and turn to God and put our faith in Jesus for our salvation, because there is no other name given among men that people may be saved. Our good works cannot save us because we have sinned and we will be judged on our sins not our good works, only Jesus can save us from our sins:.
