I have a question- I’m up for fall 2020 and one of the reasons I’m so interested in CSUMB is the beach that’s like right there. Do students spend a lot of time at the beach? Are there clubs that involve the ocean? Is the beach walking distance? Thank you so much
Naiya Luna hi I’m from the area. If you consider a 25-35 minute walk “walking distance” then yes, the beach is close. I don’t know about students spending time at the beach but it is a very tourist-y area and it does get packed on the rare hot day.
Naiya Luna the thing is that Fort ord beach is not that nice compared to the Monterey beaches, Carmel or Big Sur beaches. Mostly all the beaches are preserved so the water is really clear and blue unlike a lot of other beaches in California that have a green tint to them. Monterey is like 13 mins and carmel is like 4 more mins south of CSUMB and that’s where most of all the students go to hang out and where the nightlife is. From what i’ve seen not many people go to Fort dunes beach only on really hot days. The most popular beaches for students are Carmel beach, Casa Verde and lovers point beach, these get packed even on cold days. But for these you’d have to drive 13 mins south. Yes there is surfing, hiking, kayaking, camping, etc.. clubs that take students to beaches and camping places on Big Sur. There’s also many swimming holes with beautiful clear water in Big Sur and Carmel where students like to drink and spend time on weekends.
