Sorry about the slight crackle, but this programme was originally preserved on a privately made disc. There is also some slight fluctuation in pitch, which would not have been present on the original broadcast. If you liked it there's another one on Anton and his orchestra which is even better!

My grandfather Hector Ireland was a long-time friend of the comedian Stainless Stephen (aka Arthur Clifford Baines.
) Stainless liked to stay with the Irelands when he was on tour in the area (Widnes, in this case) explaining that he hated staying in theatrical digs. And worst of all, he hated staying with Troise and his Mandoliers. On this slim thread of recollection, I have constructed an image so vivid, it's as if I saw it with my own eyes. The disgruntled face of Stainless Stephen as he emerges in the morning from his room and realizes that between him and the bathroom is a long line of men, all clad in dressing gowns and pajamas, each with his own toothbrush and guest towel, and - more to the point - each one clutching a mandolin.

These guys were great. Anyone who has tried and failed to play a banjo as
I did, other than strumming to two or three chords, will understand just what they accomplished.

All these years later I now fully appreciate the skill of these players. What a great sound and what a shame that so many young people since then have been force fed with deafening garbage sold to them as music.

Terrific ! Thanks for posting - great music and information ! I had the pleasure of working with an act "Angelo" the King of Strings - a fabulous Mandolin player who always was Top of the Bill with his purely instrumental act of 60 minutes duration ! A great guy who started out with Mandoliers !

Does anyone know if any of the banjo arrangements still exist and might be avaiable?

I would also be very keen to find some of these arrangements. I have heard that some of the mandolin arrangements still exist, but I'm unsure where they are or if any of the banjo arrangements survive.
