I dont think bonelab is nearly as fun of a speed game compared to boneworks. less open areas, changing avatars with different physics, shorter... idk, I have played both games a lot and I just genuinely think bonelab would be boring as hell as a runner and a viewer both.
It's maybe a large ask to watch it, but the bonelab initial playthrough streams might give some extra insight, especially near the end/on the second stream where he really began to realize bonelab wasn't for him. I can't personally speak for him ofc, so the rest of this is my own observations as someone who, whilst I never speedran the game I definitely did a lot of the movement tech and glitches for fun, and have around 600 hours in Boneworks, no mods. I also haven't kept up with Bonelab's "meta" so to speak since I literally don't like the game, so perhaps I've missed something. *tl;dr* Bonelab's player is slow and clunky, even if it is easily usable, and the skill ceiling feels like it caps out way lower than Boneworks, there doesn't feel like there is nearly as much depth to your movement and capabilities, and the environments for Bonelab's story aren't too good either. They're closed in, and linear, removing one of the best parts about Boneworks (warehouse and tower are awesome) In Bonelab the player body is much more auto-controlled rather than being manual like Boneworks, like your legs latching onto surfaces automatically whilst climbing or just your legs generally making assumptions on what you're trying to do and getting it wrong constantly, or worse, throwing you away from the edge going flying, plus there are weird design decisions such as making the player *really, really* strong, but still making the legs act as support despite them not being necessary because you're so absurdly strong. Legs aren't all of the problems, either, the hands don't actually track accurately to your real hands due to the weird mapping between your real body and your fake body, and the attempt to smooth out grabs. Try virtual crouching in Bonelab then place your hand near your real chest, your hand zips towards your fake chest in a way that feels unnatural, and causes really sporadic movements in game. Additionally, when moving around your player will lean in various directions based on which way you move, if you keep your hands close to your chest/body, they'll follow your body's leaning causing once again things to feel extremely off. Up until patch 4, repeated jumps completely murdered your momentum in Bonelab, but still, afaik you still can't bhop like you can in boneworks, which can be argued as good but with no alternative it makes movement feel slow, boring and basic to me. It's like there isn't anything to get good at. There are *lots, lots and lots* of things I didn't mention here as I just couldn't think of them, but if I played through the game again I 100% would have a massive list of complaints by the end.
You know part of me is starting to believe in higher mass consciousness waves of thought that just cause these trends. I’ve been oblivious to the new updates for a while just cause I gave up hope half a year ago. And then just a couple weeks ago I start really playing the game again like to the point where I just put an extra 100 hours into the game in that time. Got my homies to play it and they think it’s the shit. I watched gold pros history video that shit was fire. Now all of a sudden I see that you’re back to running and bonelab got its first update in fuckin forever. W coincidence for me and the boners
Think you'll try running LabWorks, the BoneWorks port to BoneLab? It's only available on Patch 3 for now, and it does make considerable changes to the way the maps load in to improve performance for Quest users. But I'm curious what a run of it would look like.
