Little Miss Sunshine from 2006 - Love the cast and there are only a handful of reaction videos on UA-cam and it's a massive shame. Won 2 Oscars and nominated for 4 total, including Best Picture of the Year (2007). Great cast too
Paul Dano, Abigail Breslin, Toni Collette and Steve Carell to name a few. More faces in there you'll recognize.
Life of Pi (2012) - 10-11 nominations ... GREAT MOVIE
Slumdog Millionaire from 2009 (won best picture) 8 wins and 10 noms
Anyway, those are my 3 suggestions.
Screw it, adding a couple more - 9 noms The Hurt Locker (2008) won best picture
127 hours 6 noms, no wins - was nominated for best picture of the year and is based on a true story/events (James Franco) main actor
1996's (Sling Blade) is a great movie - won for best Writing, Adapted Screenplay and Billy Bob Thornton nominated for best actor.

you're right in not being able to pick a side per se because there isn't really a villain in this movie. at least the villain isn't really a person, but a system or a series of systems designed to keep the poor in poverty and fighting amongst themselves to stop them from being able to dismantle those systems. that's what makes Bong Joon Ho's movies so great, aside from all the amazing cinematography and directing. glad to see you touching on some of the nuances in your ending discussion. I think you guys also noticed but one of my favorite things is how the film brings your attention to the physical disparity between the Kim family and the much richer Park family. when the Kim family are running home in the rain, they are continuously descending as if they are finally returning to where they belong: far beneath the Parks in the sewage infested sub-basements of the city. meanwhile, the Parks remain high and dry in the green and comfortable hills, safe from the rain and misfortune and oblivious to what is happening below. it's beautiful visual storytelling and the movie is chock full of it. great reaction guys! ❤️

Something interesting about the ending: I have heard that it's a callback to the scene after the flood where Kim Ki-taek tells Ki-woo, "You know what kind of plan never fails? No plan. No plan at all. You know why? Because life cannot be planned."
It's therefore insinuated that because Ki-woo has this grand plan for how he will rescue his father, it will ultimately fail. That's what makes it such a melancholic ending. Such an amazing film!

The fun thing to notice in the cinematography is how they show us visually the abyss between the two families in the social ladder. To get to the rich house, they have to climb the stairs of the slums, then the stairs of the subway, then a cliff, then, when you finally get in the house, there are still stairs just to get in the garden. This is such a great way to show the inequality.

I think the most interesting part and I don’t know if you realized this but the rock Min gave “Kevin” wasn’t actually real. Min made a huge deal out of it saying that it’d bring them material wealth and good fortune which I think made them a bit cocky, however, when their house floods you clearly see the rock floating atop the water towards Kevin (if it was real it would’ve sunk). To me it’s kind of that moment where i think the realization of what they’ve done really start to settle in with Kevin. Its also kind of their way of showing how the rich made a fool out of them too. They did all of this for the wealth and at what cost? In the end, their house wasn’t any nicer and their life wasn’t any better. After that you see Kevin sort of detach himself, while the dad was never the most stable the mom and sister both resumed their roles. Ironically, the fact the rock is fake is ultimately what saves Kevin at the end, If it had been real he would of died from the impact.

Apparently, the rock wasn't supposed to float. The director decided it last minute when they were shooting the shot. Which explains why the rock is solid enough where it has real weight in all the other shots and bashes his skull in enough to cause brain damage and also the ending scene where the rock is in the river and is just staying still and not floating.

The funniest part about the rehearsal scene for me is that the dad is played by a veteran actor who's been in many Korean movies, while the guy playing the son is relatively new. and yeah while there's no clear good or evil side, the Kim's are definitely
manipulative while the parks are unaware and uncaring about how privileged they are. I do love just how skilled each member of the family is at various jobs and tasks and just how successful they would be if they had the same opportunities

I went into this movie not knowing a damn thing. I thought it was going to be about some type of alien parasite and I was so far off. It blew me away .... I only knew it won awards and people kept talking about it. I liked the symbolism of raising out of the slums into the wealthy area, but later getting washed back down where they were by the rain. Plus the fact that the current housekeeper and husband were parasites as well, just like the family of 4 that did the same. That's why she said something about knowing that the driver was going to get fired. They've been through something similar.

one thing I would also like to add is although this film seemingly in portrayed the poor being parasites, the rich ppl were also parasites.
If you noticed, the rich ppl lived so nicely that they are ignorant and quite helpless when they don't get secondhand help. Like why does the rich father need a driver when he can already drive? Why does the rich mother not know how to do simple household chores and above that, can't even make a simple ramen dish? And the buildup to the big moment, the rich guy would rather his driver be the ridiculous mascot rather than hiring an experienced mascot. it just shows that every side here leech off each other like a parasite.
I think that was the brilliant part of this movie too.

  • @cherinebelkacemi1313

the ending for me was so sad. for me it showed that no matter what we do, or how hard we work, we can never shift in our economic class. in the end, it showed how the son will never be able to buy that house. he'll spend his life on an unachievable goal, with the dad trapped forever. I cried when I first watched it. because I related so much. Perhaps its because I grew up in a similar environment, but I never saw them as villains. but desperate people. And when the rich family would point out their smell, and treated them as lesser. Dude i sobbed.
i think the parasite metaphor goes both ways. yes, you could say the poor family are the parasites for infiltrating the rich home. however, the rich family could also be compared to parasites of society. the upper 1% hoarding wealth, limiting opportunities so that the working class cant afford an education etc. with the poor barely able to afford necessities like showering. The title is a very intelligent thematic device for sure.

I think the movie is more supposed to be an “ESH” situation. The Kim family took it way too far but you can’t ignore the fact that the system forced them into such a horrible life. On the other side, the wealthy family were taken advantage of but they were also taking advantage of those economically below them. I mean this isn’t just “upper middle class”. This is RICH rich.
The real villain is the gigantic class divide

    • @siiiiiuu7
      @siiiiiuu7 2 роки тому +10

"...but you can’t ignore the fact that the system forced them into such a horrible life"
I know a lot of people think comments like this are a cop-out or excuse to commit immoral acts, but in this case, it's actually very true, especially if you pay attention to the small details. Like the fact that the Kim family actually attempted multiple legitimate careers prior to conning this rich family. In one scene, they talk about owning a small food shop, and in another, we learn that the dad was a valet guy for a while. Korea is a small country with a lot of people all trying to "make it". If you open a food shop or stand, you have to be the BEST in order to compete and attract people because there are a hundred other food shops on your same block. Competition drives innovation (hence why there are so many amazing food creations that come out of the Korean street food scene), but it's extremely rough for families to survive.

Also a big commentary on Korea's obsession with the USA was made with the kids obsession with native Americans and English morse code instead of korean. Thinking anything US related is somehow better than made locally etc. Which u can see throughout the movie. Also the time things occur is well thought and not random. They were slightly in the wrong for exploiting workers originally from lower income backgrounds, but them finessing the family was just an act of playong your cards right.
To the family (most importantly the dad) the workers are despensible as he has a seemingly endless flow of income in comparison to paying for such services. To them it didn't matter who it was and where they came from, but it was solely fixated on what they did and how good they did it. Clearly the price was just a number and if it wasn't the mom wouldn't have hired "Jessica" given the higher price rates.
It's a film about classism/elitism and the main low income family was simply trying to survive, however, they let things get too far -to the point where nothing was manageable.
Sure no one has the right to kill, but you can see the reasoning behind it. The main dad's family was animalized and treated as pets, so after dealing with classist remarks about their smell (as well as other microaggressions) the dying daughter and son being disrespected and disregarded was his last straw. So realistically, they weren't "villainous" for exploiting a flawed family with a massively unhealthy income.
Although, they were in the wrong for taking jobs from others, the death of the old housekeeper, not coming clean and alerting the owners about the potentially lethal man in the bunker, as well as the death of the other dad (that was only the main dad's fault but is still included in things that weren't the brightest ideas).
Sure they both play parts of the system, and the lower income people are at a clearer disadvantage, but I cannot stand when non-rich people excuse rich people and their inherently greedy inconsiderate actions. The family is privileged and continues to fund and stabilize a capitalist system that exploits lower income people (cultivating the concept of hierarchy).
So no I felt no sympathy for the rich family, other than the kids being exposed to unhealthy notions and lifestyles and the fact that their dad was murdered and their mom was mostly incompetent.

One of the best foreign language films EVER! =) Such a mix of comedy that turns into a mystery suspense which goes into almost horror with it's inevitable violent conclusion and then full blown drama! This film breaks the rules of filmmaking and I LOVE it!
For example, when the girl tells the mom about the boys pictures and the mom GASPS the 180 rule is broken when the camera moves. I point this out to filmmakers who say you "HAVE TO" always stay with the 180 rule when this one broke it AND won Best Picture anyways.

The reactions is so hilarious to me because I know this director and his work so well and how he comments constantly on capitalism and just from the title, you know the "parasites" are made to be the poor family feeding on this rich family, but it's actually the rich in general who gorge themselves, accumulate wealth and use, abuse and discard people as they please. You're not meant to feel bad about the rich family. Despite how they might be "taking advantage of" they are not hurt. The money they pay their workers (who are meant to take on so much additional emotional labor) is nothing to them. It's only at the end when they face some real consequence, and even then after that you know the wife and her kids wouldn't be hurting materially either.

I watched the movie last night, just so i could watch you guys to react to it. Been meaning to watch it for awhile, but kept pushing it off. Anyway, I just found it so interesting their big con act wasn't to steal money but just to be employed. They all had to be capable of the jobs that they got and perform them well to be able to keep their jobs. That's what really makes it different. It's not a heist, but has heist elements. I think the son was going to down kill them with the wealth rock, but I don't think he would have done it. He didn't pick it up when he got to the bottom of the stairs and he was asking the dead housekeeper if she was ok. There was no way he would've been able to go through with it based on that. I was also impressed by the rich people's daughter for not freaking out when she found "Kevin" in the kitchen with bloody gushing out of his head and literally carried him out of there.

the three families in this film were all narratively designed as parasites under the economic strain of capitalism by the director, Bong Joon Ho.
The destitute couple secretly mooching and living off the rich family for years, justifying that they only took a little. The husband, Geun-sae, were in the basement bc he's indebted to loan sharks for his failed cakeshop (our protagonists were talking about this particular family in the scene where they were eating at a drivers canteen. they just didn't know each other and only that they were neighbors). The wife, Moon-gwang, was the shadow lady of the house and she'd done whatever it took to keep it that way, even when the fortune was never hers to begin with.
Our protagonists, well, crafty and clever as they were, you've seen what they did to get decent paying jobs. Ki-taek, was the patriarch of the Kim family and the decision maker but he was the least skilled to work among his family. Chung-sook, the mother, was an accomplished athlete but had to make do with her lot in life. I have a particular fondness of Ki-jung, the daughter. She's far more crafty than her brother and, if given enough education and employment resources, had a better chance to lift her family out of poverty. Her smart but less driven brother, Ki-woo, even said that she fit better to the lavish lifestyle than the rest of their family, foreshadowing her better adaptability to move up in the society. That's why she had to die; the narrative didn't allowed her to move out of her capitalism assigned station.
The rich family cannot properly function without their employees' works. The Park's patriarch, Dong-ik, being driven around everyday for work, and his company was named Another Brick as a reference to a Pink Floyd's song (Bong's favourite band in college) which carry the meaning that any tragedy, injustice or abuse can only be “another brick” in an already existing wall. His attitude to his employees was to throw money around and expects them to just shut up and bear their job. the rich mother, Yeon-go, named Ki-woo as "Kevin" willynilly to appear more westernized as he was her daughter's English tutor, lied about giving "Kevin" bonus payments, couldn't do basic housekeep, goshdarn indolent (when I was a child, my parents would employed live-in domestic assistant bc they're both working. my mama would berated me to hell and back if I asked the assistant to do simple tasks when I could do those tasks by myself), and had a tendency to emulate poor people's condition to fuel her sexual fantasy. the daughter, Da-hye, while granted that she's also experiencing some degree of neglect from her parents, was naive and looking for attentions at the wrong places bc it's not given by her parents. Da-song, the favourite child, pampered, fragile, waited on hand and foot, and being let running loose most of the time.
There was also the case of cultural appropriation by Da-song with the plethora of Native American "merchs", encouraged by his parents, portrayed as another type of parasitism.

Classic Bong Joon-ho: there's always so much to pull from his movies. Everything is so beautifully purposeful in his films. Shot composition, camera movement, pacing of the edit...mwah. Chef's kiss. It's all done with intent in getting across the themes and driving home the narrative core. As a long-time fan of Bong Joon-ho, it was so fun to see everyone get excited for this movie in 2019 and 2020, and even if they didn't always understand every "specifically Korean" nuance, there was always something for viewers to latch onto that they enjoyed. My only grip was that none of the actors got nominations at the Oscars for their brilliant work :P

Thank you, Ninetailedbrush for your comments on how it this movie is about a system that perpetuates. I grew up super-poor and while I didn't like the family (who were crass, dishonest, and unkind), I did understand their desperation. The poor family is doomed. They live below the surface and dream of better days while the rich family acts with an entitlement that
For me it's the contrasts that are so moving and thought-provoking. The poor family is literally living below the surface and suffering breathing outside pesticides because they have no resources to get rid of their own parasites (bugs in their tiny cramped soon-to-be flooded home). They are all grasping and selfish in some ways but we see them literally living in this unforgiving well of extreme poverty where the amoebas fight each other for the tiniest bit of resource to survive (the shot of them crouching on the raft in the flood is brilliant because it is all they have always known).
I don't think the rich family is evil, exactly, but their thoughtless cruelty and privilege is sometimes just as violent as the actual violence of their staff (the father holding his nose around the poor is incredibly gross). In the end, the poor family is harshly paid back for their actions, the rich family suffers both their personal actions but also what they represent, and nobody ends up happy. It's an incredibly tragic outcome to me -- I grew up poor -- and very sad and moving. I will remember the final few minutes for a very long time.

It's worth thinking about the social divide that provides context to this film and the layers of interpretatjon when you have a greater understanding for Korean society. The people who are born rich are at a level where the poor cannot even hope to catch up to. Instead, they only go for the scraps and fight with others who are of the same class or even lower than them. You have the 2 ways of thinking where they want more and work hard to get what they want (e.g. to survive or to move up in the world through legal or illegal means)...and the other school of thought like the housekeeper and her husband where they learn from society to be 'content' with what they have and to just accept it. You've also got the way the main family flick away the stink bugs in their own home...almost like how the rich family (although not usually openly hostile) dismiss people or issues which are 'below' them without much thought...just minor annoyance. The rich family are purposely shown in such a way that you don't hate them, but you don't love them either even if you can't put your finger on why. The excuse is either that they are blissfully ignorant' in their little bubble (e.g. like the mother and her callous words about how the rain was such a blessing) or they are too busy/important to care in their own controlled world where they have the power to do what they will without consequences and speak callously to reinforce their superiority without taking blame. They dismiss their employees without transparent reason or so much as a chance for the employees to tell a different side of the story. There's also the father's interaction with Mr Kim at the end where he's reinforcing that because Mr Kim is being paid extra (despite the fact that he's not party entertainment, he's a chaffeur), Mr Kim should do as he he's told. And even when people are dying and/or in danger, it's still the basement smell that Mr Park focuses on and shows pure derision over. It's that question that hangs in the air of who is the real parasite of this society? Who's sucking who dry? And will it change when the poor remain poor? They learn not to make plans or not to expect them to amount to anything because to them, plans are not actions they can follow through to get to a goal. Plans are no more than dreams. Dreams that lead to things they can see or even get a 'taste' of, but can't legitimately reach. Because at the end of the day, no matter what Kevin does, that plan is nothing more than that...something that is bound to fail. Director Bong himself said in an interview that on the possible wage that Kevin could earn (without money for university and therefore without a chance at a better paid job)...it would take him 564 years to be able to afford such a house. Just let that sink in...

although most would say that the main parasites we're the 2 poor class, I thought I also mention that the rich family are a bunch of parasites as well.
They have money but ever notice that they don't even do even a simple task? like the rich father has a driver to drive him to work everyday or the rich mother doesn't do well with household chores which is why they need a housekeeper? Also, the rich husband even looks down on them yet for some reason, they feed off of the work from or get some weird inspiration from the poor. Such as the part where the wife and husband were getting intimate, the wife was roleplaying as a druggie ever since hearing about their previous driver sleeping with a druggie (which of course this was the poor family's scheme). Also for the party, the rich father could have found someone to play the Indian but he rather choose his driver as it seemed befitting and when the one girl got stabbed to death and his son passed out from shock, the rich father was only worried for his son who was actually alright rather than the girl who was stabbed to death. I don't have an easier way to described this but either way, the rich family in this movie were just as whacked as the two poor classes they hired.

It's actually the first foreign-language film to ever win the oscar for best picture! I wrote an entire report on this movie when I was in college and taking a class on pop culture as a medium for and a reflection of change and it was a long report lol so here are just a few of my thoughts.
I think the reason many of us root for the poor family, even a little bit, despite their actions is that we relate to them more. More people are going to be able to relate to being in a situation where you are desperate enough to do things you wouldn't do if you were in a different situation and generally just being driven to madness by life than being so filthy rich you don't have a care in the world about what goes on outside your life. And people are generally inclined to dislike the rich whether it be out of past experience, envy, spite etc.
I find the lines "even though she's rich she's nice" and "she's nice BECAUSE she's rich" so interesting. I think it describes what the movie was trying to say very well. I emphasize that the following is what I think the movie was trying to say about these specific types of situations and is not in any way reflective of all situations experienced by the rich and/or the poor. I feel like the director wanted to show how the poor have to fight tooth and nail and resort to crimes in order to survive in this world while the rich remain oblivious to these struggles. The rich family has never known that level of poverty the same way the poor family has never known that level of luxury which is where their flaws come into play. In combination with the whole scene with the rich mom in the car talking about the rain and holding her nose the movie presents its commentary so well. She is happy it rained oblivious to the impact it had on the poor family. And she is sitting there with her feet literally out and in the air but is bothered by the "poor people smell" the driver was emitting. On the other hand, the poor family continues to fight and be cunning because they've always been like that. Living in poverty, they were hard-wired to do whatever it takes to survive and thrive.
And I don't think Kevin/Kiwoo was trying to kill the people in the basement when he went there with the rock. He was genuinely shaken up about what went down and genuinely concerned. He was trying to give the rock, a symbol of wealth and prosperity, to them out of guilt.
I also feel like rather than being unstable, the dad had this over-protectiveness to him when it came to his family. When he was comforting Kevin after what happened, I felt as though he couldn't quite show how shaken up he really was about what happened. As the supposed head of the household, he felt it was his responsibility to burden and he might even see it as his fault because of his initial failure to provide for his family. He held everything in, all the subtle microaggressions about his status until he saw what happened to his family. Same with the mom, she reacted because her daughter had gotten hurt.
Yikes that was more than I intended to write so I'll stop here. Love the reaction and glad you guys like it honestly such a great movie!

It was calculated and it was concluded that it would take hundreds of years for the son to earn enough money to buy that house so there is no possibility for him to buy it. That’s kind of the point like they would never be able to get close to that wealth without exploiting people like the rich exploit. “You were too busy stealing someone else’s house to take care of your own” was a really weird thing to say, they couldn’t have prevented their house flooding if they never even met the rich family. Only the city and systems in place can try to prevent that but they don’t care enough about those who live in poverty enough to build them housing that isn’t at risk to flood.

@@bananaboatcharlie As you said they are in a position of privilege. They aren't exactly privileged, per se. So there is a difference between the situation of the two families.
For example, the Park family is nice because they don't have unbearable problems to deal with everyday. Yes, they have problems, like their son has seizures but they have enough money to afford a car, a driver and a house near an hospital. So this problem won't worry them very much.
But now imagine a poor family (like the Kims) with a son with seizures episodes, everyday they would be very very worried about it, this kind of pressure EVERYDAY has an affect in their personalities. That's why it's easier to be nice when someone is rich.
Now why isn't the Kim family nice when they have privilege? Because they actually don't have it. The previous housemaid is a threat to their family's income. Now they have stable jobs, they can pay for food and other basic stuff, they won't let someone jeopardize that. Believe me, if a poor person suddenly has a chance to not be hungry this person won't let anyone take that away from him.
So that's the difference. Nobody is nice when their lifestyle is threatened. The Park family isn't nice when their lifestyle is altered. For example, the mother fired a sick housemaid who doesn't have anywhere to live out of nowhere. She didn't think about her employee at that time, she was just trying to protect their family, the Kims did the same thing.
The problem here is that the Park family live an easier life, so they don't HAVE to be mad all the time. The Kim family can't afford to be nice to the whole world, they need to fight to survive.

@@kassiogomes8498 As someone currently living in active poverty on the streets of San Francisco and is responding to you from a library computer because like the Kims I can't afford phone service or even a phone, and who has severe narcolepsy with catoplexy which puts me at risk of seizures and injury all the time with no healthcare, I don't have to imagine what poverty or danger is like. The point of the film and the constant descending staircases, including the one into the basement, was the director's way of showing how the poor are trapped in a parasitic system which forces them to prey on each other and fight for basic survival while the rich get richer off exploitative labor and suffer no consequences for their cruelty. The right thing for the Kim family to do was to show compassion for people in a situation like theirs or worse, not turn their backs on them and then kill/allow them to die. The right thing for the housekeeper and her husband to do was to not torment and blackmail the Kim family, but use the video to demand help from them since that's the situation they were in. I've often gone without food for days, but when I get some I still share it with people who have even less than I do. Your situation may be the reason for your actions, but it's not an excuse to behave like the exploitative monsters you claim to despise in society. Otherwise, like the end of the movie shows, we all remain trapped and suffering in a system we can never escape without helping each other. No one in this movie was evil or completely right, but they all took advantage of each other in different ways which is why they all suffered in the end.

@@bananaboatcharlie people aren't suffering from the system because they are fighting each other. People are fighting each other because they are suffering from the system. This films wasn't created to show how poor people should behave. This film was created to show how they behave because of the capitalist system.
It's not the Kim family's or the housemaid's fault they have to fight each other to have a stable job. It's the rich people and the people with power fault. It would be very mean and out of touch to rich people (like the actors and directors of this movie) to make a movie and the moral of it be: "don't fight, poor people, BE HAPPY and merciful"
That isn't the message at all. The message is: "dear rich people, this system that makes your live so good is hurting poor people, do something about it".
Believe me, nobody will make a movie to show poor people they are poor because they aren't helping other people. Poor people are trying to survive, we can't judge someone who is trying their best to have a house to live in. Rich people are the ones who have the power to do something, they are the ones to blame.

I often wonder how the story could have turned out differently if only the kids had taken positions there. Because up until that point no jobs has been stolen. The son was being a Tutor and the daughter was helping the young boy continue his art and they were exploring art therapy.
Even though the daughter wasn't qualified, it arguably didn't matter because Art is interpretative and every person has their own opinions about a piece. If the kids had stopped there they would have been getting paid and would have had future references. Up until this point it wasn't a con as they were delivering a service and getting paid for it.
Later they could have used their references and/or their employers word of mouth to find their parents jobs in other homes. The film already shows that Society relies on who you know rather than what you know, as you see in this film that they ALL gets jobs through recommendations. But they get too greedy and that becomes their downfall.
Also, if you only saw the film from the POV of the rich family it would be a thriller because you would see a poor family maniupulating them to get into their lives. And then it would get even more creepy when you discover that there is a man ALREADY living in their basement.

I feel like the Parks are only able to have the wealth that they do because there are people like the Kims who live in poverty. Also, amassing that much wealth rarely if ever occurs without someone being exploited in some way. The Parks get to live off their exploitation of others, but they do so from a distance. The Kims' exploitation and parasitic nature is much closer. I don't think that the Parks deserve the violence that happened to them, but I think there is every reason to believe that they profit off violence that they don't have to see or feel guilt from.

First time I saw the rich dad was stabbed: how can the poor man do this? You just killed a people!!
After a second, I suddenly understand what the film wants to show us. And this time I would say maybe that is not a bad choice literally. No one in this film is innocent. Just no one.
