XL1000, one of the best comfy travellers ever made. That one has the stock chain and sprockets, with a short ratio you will have a new machine..... 2 open cans also. Better machine than many of the new ones. Great video. Cheers.
Great buy, as long as the cam chain tensioners are the newer ones and the rectifier is in good condition it will not let you down. I have the 2001 one with carbs and a swapped 6 speed gearbox and it is a blast to ride. very comfortable and capable for its size and weight. Would you say it is smooth at the lower rpms? The carb ones have a bit of a reputation for surging, mine also has it and I am thinking of upgrading to a newer EFI model.
As far as I know, the issues with the cam chain tensioners is only on the SD01. Mine is relatively smooth from 2500rpm upwards, depending on the gear. If yours is surging at low rpm, maybe check if the carbs are synced correctly. Had the same issue on my EFI 990 ADV and 1150GS.
@@StromerUA-cam Did the best I could with my bike, just carbies and a lumpy V twin I guess. Still a great bike regardless for its size and weight very athletic.
@@MrGuffo It is a one on one swap, entire transmission assembly, shift forks, drum, shift work and newer clutch assembly. It is easier to find a good efi varadero than do all this work. I was bored I guess.
Much more refined engine compared to the 1150....but the brakes aren't as good. I don't find the Varadero more top heavy then the GS. The Varadero engine comes alive above 3500rpm.
I also have a 2005 V-strom and I thought about trying the Varadero for the same reason you did. How are you finding the differences between both? I hear they're a bit more confy, but also a little bit heavier than the Strom. In terms of power they are very similar, but maybe the weight or the gearbox ratio makes the difference?
If we are talking about the VStrom 650, the difference in Power is definitely there. Much more torque from down low. Weight wise...yes the Varadero is heavier on paper. But in real life I find the Varadero actually more balanced than the VStrom 650.
@@StromerUA-cam Sorry, for some reason I thought you had the 1000 strom, so that's why I said similar power, I have a close friend that has the 650 Strom, and I've driven the bike many times, a very fun engine. The balance is something people usually speak about the Varadero, they say it's more refined, and the better looking one (although that's a personal preference). I'm trying to get a chance to test out a Varadero to see the real difference from my prespective. Thanks for the info! Great driving, and a very good quality video btw!
my favourite machine, tried many others but always go back to that one..nice raw footage..
Yea, a kinda underrated bike today!

Yep, I already though about dropping a tooth on the front sprocket.
@@StromerUA-cam Yes.
- 1 on the front +2 on the rear sprocket.
Quite distinct gearbox and raw transmission.
We have the save way of riding, short shifting thanks to all the torque.
Thanks for nice video👌
Thx for tuning in!

How much work did you do to adapt the gearbox?

@DhrSpies yeah, probably not worth it, but it's interesting to know nevertheless. I already replaced the clutch with a hydraulic one from a SuperHawk
How does the honda compare to R1150gs? I find varadero a bit top heavy and unhappy bellow 3k Rpm. Willing to try the bmw
