I've worked with plenty of people in finance. There are a LOT of scams and unethical things happening in a lot of so-called startup companies. A lot of times, they use "startup" as a cover, an excuse, to cut corners and exploit other people. There are good reasons private investors like to keep their investments private, and let venture capitalists like JD Vance do the dirty work.

Not only that but did you hear let’s take the tomato market away from the Mexicans. That’s not nice, in fact the more crops Mexico can grow and provide jobs then they don’t need to come here. They can stay in Mexico because they can make money to support their families. Mexicans are hard workers but they have to be able to build a business and afford to feed and educate their families. I don’t want them to be deprived of that. They helped us during WW1 with the Bracero program when all our men end up cross the ocean. It amazes me how fast Americans forget these things. Think about the jobs Mexicans do - they do the jobs our young people today don’t want to do.

It was the local workers and their utter lack of work ethic that lead to the company's downfall. That's why they had to bus in 500 extra workers. It was a stretch to believe they could have a company staffed by local Appalachian dirt poor uneducated folks with little to no work ethic and actually turn a profit. Had they put that same facility up pretty much anywhere else in the US, it would be a publicly traded stock and a household name by now.

This use of migrant workers as contract workers is a common scam to exclude them fair wage and hour laws.... and other protections... many of them are often undocumented and off the books. As an attorney, I represented the employees on these issues.
