I imagine others in the comments are wanting to see you turn this into a ballista, I would love to see you do that!!
As a trad archer I always thought we were all a bit crazy... Kramer you've confirmed it.
I also thought that. It's amazing to know that we are all a lil crazy not just me 🤪
Fletching ( aka arrow making)
Is one of those lifelong skills that even an old master learns something new.
Jim hamm said in his book " it Olney takes a few honest tries to build a somewhat accurate bow. But fletching takes a lifetime to get an arrow to fly straight. "
I can confirm.
It's very complicated.
You need to understand spine, EFOC, grain, paradox and tuning and those are only the basics.
Love the video, but wanted to let you know the audio is balanced a little weird for headphones/stereo listerners. It's weighted to the left, and at some points sounds like it's only coming out of the left ear. not sure if it's an intentional choice or not, but it's a bit hard to listen to with headphones :(
I've done the make your own dowel jig thing. It's hard to make it work just right. You can work from a larger hole down to smaller in stages. Also, try pulling your dowel through after a bit comes through, you will get less flex on the piece.
Thanks!
The biggest neolithic bow found in the Nordic countries was found at a site in White Karelia and the bow was 2.9 meters long -archeologists believe that it was a bow used for trapping large game such as moose or forest reindeer. Set in a similar fashion on a pole that resembles a primitive crossbow next to a game trail and it was most likely tripwire operated.
Congrats you have the base for a balista!
it's funny how slow it looks, but still really cool. Reminds me of this Chinese movie I saw on tv a long time ago and all the archers in the army laid down and shot their bows like that.
Probably the movie "Hero" with Jet Li.
Your idea for using the belt sander while spinning the wood to make a dowel for an arrow shaft was exactly my idea that I thought of except I never tried it. ❤
Hard to say for sure without a closeup of those broken blanks but it looks like a combination of grain runout and the oscillations in the blank caused the failures.
I expect most arrow makers in history would have used a rived blank rather than sawn. By definition you can’t get grain runout with a riven blank.
Loved this video. Thanks :)
Hey, great vid but I just wanted to report that I've noticed a imbalance in my ears when watching your videos lately. I'm listening with headphones and I feel like most of the sound from your videos come from my left ear. It's not a huge problem but it's a bit uncomfortable to me. I don't know if you changed smth or if you can even do anything about it but if you can look into it, I'd appreciate thanks ^^
Can confirm, it sounds like 70% on the left ear
Agreed
Just Your crooked eardrums. Switch Your headphones around
@@nevillesavage2012 now it's 70% on the right, thank you
Man needs some sort of strap or foot harness so it doesn't fly off like that. He could convert it into an absolutely huge take down crossbow.
This looks like so much fun!
You should make a sort of mount for it, so the bow itself serves as the limbs for a crossbow/ballista. Then you could pull it bsck the full length of the arrow and actually aim it. It'd probably have to be mounted on a standir something though.
What do you mind doing a third video on this topic and going over the pros and cons of having such a long bow as well as its specs light draw weight, arrow weight, arrow velocity, etc?
Large mounted bows were often used as stationary defense in castles. Also the Romans had Spear launching ballistas for sieges.
They did, Ironically they were called catapultas, and catapults were called ballistas
How about a extended handle for the bow
Like a forearm length
Two bars
Connected to the bow
At the end have a handle for you to hold
You can add some padded arm supports, too, in case you get floppy arms when pulling back the string!
And for transportation
The extended handle could fold in on itself.
Add a few spring locks and BOOM
*_SHŌGUN MEGAWARBOW!!!_*
the shōgun part is from the samurai records that they chose warriors with longer left arms to be trained in the ways of the bow
Which having said arm length that would give them a MASSIVE draw length required to wield the MAHOOSIVE AND INFAMOUS
*_DAIKYŪ YUMI WARBOWS THAT LASTED FROM THE MUROMACHI PERIOD (14th century) ALL THE WAY TO THE EDO PERIOD (1603-1868)_*
A MECHANIZED PSEUDO LONGARM TO WIELD ONE BEAST OF A BOW
THE DRAW
THE LENGTH
THE ABSOLUTE
*_P O W E R!!!_*
That Bow is a souls like
Well you made Goliath now ya gotta make David. What's the most power you can pack in the smallest package? This video was pretty cool, I want a 10 ft bow now...
Now that was truly watch worth , 2 thumbs way up !
Nice. Now I want to see one glass backed and 200 lb. draw? Maybe add a bow sling to hold the feet, to make it safe to draw?
I really enjoy watching your crazy and unique videos, can't wait to see what you come up with next. 😎
You can build the wind lance from the hobbit?
You can also mount this 10 feet bow on a support, make a longer arrow and it will be like a roman scorpion
when the arrow if not made but freaking machined...
Reminds me of that guy, Alan Case. He’s attempting to break the record for longest arrow shot and he uses his leg muscles to draw the bow
Do a reflex design, so that there is a lot more tension on the first inch of draw than now. That's how composite bows store more energy. It will make for a much faster bow!
I read somewhere years ago about archers during sieges using long bows launching with foot draws.I think it was from Japan or China.
If you want more than one arrow it might be useful to buy them from home depot. They've got quite a few 48in. dowels, not sure on the quality of the wood but that's what Dash Rendar uses to homecraft his arrows for his 130+ lb heavy war bows.
Very nice. There are pictures of brazilian indigenous warriors lying on their back and shooting super big bows and arrows against boats! I've always wondered how it would work
I've seen this in the movie Hero with Jet Li, set in ancient China, I guess the advantage is that you can use a way more powerful bow.
I surprised you didn't get a wood lathe to tinker with. Of course, I'm sure there is reason why not. But, that feather jigis still awesome and your dowel jig was quite interesting stuff. It works. In machining or lathe tools in general. The have a steady rest that is used to keep the center of the part from bouncing up and down. Might be able to use a piece of PVC to slide over and hold with off hand. Either way cool idea.
I have wanted to make a bow like this but with foot loops so it stays on your feet. A ballista style bow fired from a seated position. It would pack some punch for sure.
Hey Kramer, you should build a foot bow and break the distance record at the salt flats....over a mile as I recall!
Try bamboo or river cane for arrows
Would like to see how powerful a 10' bow or 12' bow (with foot brace on belly of bow) & 5' or 6' ballista-style(think giant lawn dart/Jart) arrow would be & how far it would shoot.
Dude thays so cool!!! I need to see it tested against stuff. Fruits vegetables the meat target i must know what damage this thing can do
What if you had an Instant Legolas system with some sort of ratchet or crossbow spanning device? That would allow you to shoot smaller but heavier darts like the solenarion/majra/navek/tong ah. Of course, you would have to do all of this while on stilts so maybe not
And with length like that for an arrow and dowel jig, wouldn't it be easier to pull not push?
Oh, man!
What I'd like to see is you using that at full draw--but with an Asian overdraw device and a normal length arrow!
Kramer out here training to be the next Anor Londo archer.
I have had good luck with a router round over bit. Have you ever studied which profile fleching is more efficient, shield or parabolic?
Short sling stirrups for your feet would be smart.
That's so fun! It looks like what it felt when I used my dad's bow as a child :D
I could only string it by basically sitting on it, and used to shoot it with the feets :D
Such a long bow is very inefficient, but I would love to know the speed and the weight of the arrow! (To calculate the energy xD)
Would love to try archery, but with heights of 6'6" I would have to have custom gear, arrows included as those I tried once were to short for my draw.
What was the black stuff you put on the arrow?
Can you make a video in depth how to make arrows ? Please. Unless there is one already
that was a fun video .... :) nice one.
4:20 you finally figured it out 😅
hay Kramer, have you ever tryed to make footed arrows ?
Now its time to build a ballista!
Would have been cool to see the distance differences between standard arrow and mammoth
In the PNG bows this big are not out of the ordinary.
Finally Shaq has a normal sized bow!
great vid Kramer
Put a stir up or two on it so it doesnt fly away from your feet when you loose your arrow
I know its crazy... but I love it lol
Isn't there some Polynesian tribe that uses an extender for shorter arrows? Though once you have a javelin launcher you might as well get some.
Next on should be one of those short plains Indian bows
Funny video!
Why did you glue the fletching this way?
Yes. Backwards!
To use the whole draw, add a rifle stock with a pistol grip where your elbow normally would be.
Is it possible to make a bow with multiple shafts you know like a bow in the shape of an ax or something like that🤔
My dude, you might want to look into Manchu Archery 😀
What is wrong with square arrows?
Dang, mount that up and you've got a Greek precursor to the ballista =D
That was awesome 😎
Seems to me you’ve done big…why not go short? Didn’t the Comanche have ultra short bows? Is it viable to use your skills and modern tech to recreate one of that length and power?
Why did you mount the Feathers in the Wrong Way?
Nice video. Did you ever think of making a "tong ah" so that you could full draw standard arrows?
Also, how tall could you go if you made a japanese style bow? Could you make one 15+ feet tall?
If you put some kind of strap around the handle and your foot the bow would probably not fly off your foot
They used to have competitions like that for the longest shot. I think their record is 1100 yards
Imagine this designed like a yumi with the asymmetrical shooting position, you may get to full draw easier.
You need to turn that into a stable crossbow like stationary
That, Sir, is an atlatl dart. The old clout shooters used simple rope foot loops so that their beautiful bow didn’t eat dirt.
The Na'vi would like to order a few🤣
Did anyone else think of the rain of arrows scene from Jet Li movie Hero?
I've wondered about extra long bows whenever I watch.
Hey Kramer question for you for Willit bow series new mexico yucca pole work as backing possibly?
And that, is how humans invented ballistas..
"Medieval knights hate this cool hack."
So... is the next video going to be a 12 foot bow?
I guess to maximise arrow speed from a bow like this you would have to give it crazy draw weight, like 300lbs.
Back in the day saw somewhere on youtube some crazy russian dude, who used a threaded head/threading due (don't know how this tools is called in english, that one which used for making outer threads) for carving arrow shafts
Congratulations you reinvented the belly bow but good idea still
Now do a recurve version.
Need some leather straps to keep the bow bound to the foot.
Now just put a base on it and you've got yourself a really sweet ballista 😁
Nice
I bring my 10 foot bow to Diddy parties 😅
you should have gone aluminum on the arrow!
Idea! Get two osage staves to equal 10' do a Z splice, reflex the crap out of them to make a high performace 🏹 And lets see what happens!!!
this shooting style could look viably cool for "planet of the apes", with their legs actually having long fingers that can grip things, this would work
Surprised you didn't wrap it up in lightweight masking tape
At least make the arrow longer, or you'll probably get an unexpected tracheotomy.
It reminds me of the bow from avatar with the blue people not the Airbender
Why didn't you just buy dowel?
The Cahuilla Indians of eastern San Diego country used long bows meant to be drawn using both feet, they hunted deer and bighorn sheep with the bows. Catalpa bows with deflexed tips. A ranger(Gary Mc Loughlan) at Anza Borrego Desert State Park made replicas of those and other native tools.
Never made a bow of Eucalyptus. Never.
Turn it into a crossbow, let's see how far that thing can go.
Use a tap and die to make the dowels
What movie is it where Amazon tribes men use these? Laying down and shooting massive lances?
maybe add a strap so the bow doesnt fly off your foot every shot
build a full on balista
Bro…poundage and speed. Literally the only things that matter until you start lobbing broom handles at ballistic gel from 20 yards or more.
God bless you also
