The War Games is, in a way, the perfect finale for Doctor Who as a whole, not just the 60s era. It's not the first time the Doctor lost, but it's the first time he was actively defeated. It puts an end to a previously unknown story arc in which the Doctor is a fugitive from his own race, and the War Chief is kind of the final boss of 60s Who.
Of course, the story was written with the knowledge that the show could be cancelled at any moment, and if the BBC hadn't greenlit season 7, it would've served its purpose perfectly, although the amount of Time Lord lore that's been built up over the years has just made The War Games more important to the development of Doctor Who.

The Time Lord actor who had played Gulliver was also the Time Lord Chancellor Goth in "The Deadly Assassin", and "Noel Gallagher" played the Doctor in the stage play "Doctor Who and the Seven Keys to Doomsday".

Good to see you, Mr Chimp. I can never find fault with The War Games, it's one of my favourites.
Just need to add - the second Timelord, Bernard Horsfall, is also Chancellor Goth in The Deadly Assassin. Cracking video as ever, thank you 🙂

The TARDIS descending into the water was from Fury from the Deep... Pretty sure all of the "chase" to get away from the Time Lords was using prior footage.
Great vid, by the way! One of my absolute favourite stories of WHO, ever, from my fave Doctor, written in 1 weekend. Terrance Dicks - amazing work!

Actually, I haven't watched much of modern who when I first watched the war games, I knew a bit of the Time Lords from the Eccleston Run but that was it.
So all that information REALLY WAS brand new to me.... (Who would have thought that starting Classic Who with the Black and White era would be so rewarding.)

It's interesting how the Doctor's relationship with the Timelords has evolved over time.
Back then this all powerful and intimidating bunch who tried to control his life and make him do their dirty work. And now, where he is a renowned hero who can tell the likes of Rassilon where to shove it.

  • @johnmichaelcule8423

Yes, I watched the Time Meddler and The War Games at the time. One of the things that was done when the first Pilot was rewritten for the actually broadcast first episode was to make the Doctor's background less fixed. Which was the right decision I think. They needed to figure out what they had before they could tell us the deep backstory. And in recent years show runners have been chaffing over the vast amount of backstory that has accumulated.
I sometimes wonder if the War Chief we see here is the General who leads the Time Lords during the Time War in the 11th and 12th Doctors; era. He died in thie episode but the Time Lords pulled the Master out of the Eye of Harmony somehow so a mere resurrection should be no problem for them. He/she certainly regards the Doctor as their nemesis and the two of them have history.

Excellent video as usual Chosen Chimp! Funny you should mention the War Chiefs medallion, it was originally used by Zephon (the cabbage alien from Daleks Master Plan).
Also the First Time Lord (the one who’s also in The Time Meddler, also reappears as a time lord again in the Deadly Assassin as chancellor Goth giving that story some unintentional depths

It's funny here, this Story set up Soo much of DW afterwards. We get our first impression of the Time Lords, we have Proto Master here. Then the idea that the doctor has a say in what he'll look like. Up until the Jodie/Chinballs error, most of the production moved the story along with deviations explained as the Doctor always lies.
Let's hope RTD and Bad Wolf productions fix what's been destroyed of late. Anyway thanks and keep cracking on.

I think it’s a bit too long, a brilliant six parter perhaps but there’s no denying ‘The War Games’ has some of the exceptional best Doctor Who ever committed to the ever changing canon, (even leading into the wonderfully mythical season 6B). These are my favourite versions of The Time Lords’, I know they’re cliched ‘all powerful’ god like beings, but when a cliche works as well as this, the cliche’s completely worth it. Great video Mr Chimp, love your take on the show, especially it’s madly creative sixties era. Gx

If you're talking about when the Doctor's race is Finally given a name. Yes.
But the First Time Lord story was actually 1965's "The Time Medler", when the Fist Doctor meets the Monk (aka the Medling Monk) in 1066 Hastings.
The Doctor would remove the Monk's Dimensional Statbablizer, shrinking the interior of his TARDIS to that of an Actual sarcophagus.

I’ve always said that 63-69 DW could be seen as the “first series” of DW. Series two kicks off the show in a totally new direction. Doctor Who could have ended with The War Games and it would have been perfect.

And then... rather than keep the whole Time Lord ethos mysterious and in the background, as befits a culture utterly beyond Earth's... we get bumbly crumblies in garish costumes pottering, declaiming, conniving, and generally selling the whole concept shorter and shorter. And sillier and sillier.
No wonder RTD loathed them enough to Time War them out of existence. Then Moffat resuscitates them. Chibnall then disposes of them again. And apparently, forthcoming Season 14 won't have any. Unless, of course, in a dimensional future twist, the Timeless Child turns out to be... ??
