    If you are listening to this for school put the speed on 1.5, you can still understand it and it’s only 2 hours long

      You can also get used to 2x speed. That's what I use for most of my audiobooks.

      19th century English novels were the entertainment of the time. People read more, language and literature were to them what computer skills are to you. At the rate language, written and spoken are deteriorating if the world still exists by the next millenia the banal speech of 2020 will seem equally foggy.

    The tsunami of adjectives are so unnecessary. It kinda makes it hard to tell WTH is going on. If you are reading this you can listen to all 3 hours! I believe in you

    Moral of the story; Learn to let go, I guess? Honestly, I thought I was kinda getting a grasp on what the author was trying to tell us, especially toward the end, but that final chapter's plot twist completely turned that upside down. For the entire story they make Zeena out as the antagonist, but then Ethan and Mattie get absolutely ruined by their selfishness, so that makes them seem in the wrong. Chapters 2-8 build them up as the ones you are rooting for, and by the end you almost look down on them for what their foolish and self-centered decision gets them. I mean, Zeena seems manipulative and is probably reveling in their misery, but I guess she won in the end. None of the characters are particularly good role-models. Ethan is at moments like when he realizes he is trying to manipulate the Hales out of money and backs off, only to offset his noble deeds with something stupid like literally trying to commit suicide. But I guess that entire era of writing was centered around breaking romantic illusions, so it makes sense. The book seems like a romance novel all the way through until that last chapter. As .38 Special sang, "Hold on loosely, but don't let go. If you cling too tightly to her, you're gonna lose control." And they lost control, quite literally.
    All's I can say is... the people who write these kinds of stories must have SERIOUSLY been hurt by somebody... wowza.

    • @Ciara_styles
      @Ciara_styles 4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah. The author wrote Ethan Frome and another one of her books called The Age Of Innocence completely based off her life at the time. She was in a loveless marriage w this guy named Teddy and then had an affair w another dude that made her suuuper happy + the affair gave her more motivation to write so she wrote a bunch of love letters n stuff

  • @wendigo6188
    @wendigo6188 2 роки тому +30

    Honestly I know ethan had a hard time with his mother and wife being sick and all but damn, I really do blame it all on Ethan. Zeena was actually pretty levelheaded and agreeable, I felt so bad for her when she was crying over the broken jar. Even though Matti had her flaws I still liked her, it wasn’t really her fault Ethan fell in love with her and she fell in love with him. I feel like Ethan could have dealt with all of it so so much better if he were more logical and not as impulsive. Matti definitely got the worst in the end. I have an outrageously small amount of pity for Ethan but that might just be me.
    Also the imagery is beautiful, some may find it difficult to follow because of how descriptive it is but I think it adds a lot to the story. The plot isn’t all thst complicated or interesting but I think the way everything is worded is what makes the book impactful.

    • @zoey1970
      @zoey1970 2 роки тому

      Zeena was a hypochondriac and used all her made up illnesses to manipulate everyone. She tortured Ethan and Mattie. Ethan only married Zeena because he didn’t want to be alone. He never loved her though. When he met Mattie, they fell in love, but they were stuck. They wanted to run away, but they had no money, and nowhere to go. So they decide to just kill themselves, but at the last minute he couldn’t go through with it. The irony of this story is at the end, Zeena (the “sickly” one) spent the last 20 years taking care of Ethan and Mattie. They’re all miserable.
