They're actually not that bad? Plenty of 60s US muscle had drum brakes too!

@@Toby_the_Glen Brother if there's one group of cars notorious for having too much power for their brakes, it's 1960s US muscle cars.

I recall a handicap race at silverstone for the VSCC the scratch car was a 450S masser gave 4 laps start to the slowest car .
The masser won was magic!!!! What a monster car

The most interesting versions of the 450S were the couple that appeared in the USA in the very early 1960s. Both were powered by a 5.7 litre version of the 450S' 4.5 litre engine that Maserati intended for powerboat racing. Texan, Jim Hall, successfully raced one before commissioning the first of his Chevrolet-powered Chaparral sports racing cars.

This is more than a 450S since it had the overbore 5.7 liter marine engine swapped way back in time. That was easily done because the wet sleeves did not require the same bore spacing to be equivalent to a US big block. Nothing or very little way to tell from the outside, except maybe for the size of the Webers.

At the current Ferrari and Maserati challenge events like Cavallino the drivers of the 300S usually best the Ferrari V12s without resorting to this big V8 model. Of course the last four cam Mille Miglia Ferrari is only in the hands of Peter Sachs who is on record as not wanting to duke it out, even though his driving skills decades ago were pretty decent. So far as I know there has never been an event where a 450S was driven hard enough to demonstrate its capabilities, at least in the USA. Some have said that it is a weak transmission they were favoring, and others believe the chassis is not as well balanced as the six cylinder cars.

Fabulous clip and love the steady cam work. The very clear whine of the transmission in the cockpit is something new to me. I'm sure that's how is supposed to sound. Does that "whine" come from having straight-cut gears? Or no synchros?

      Hi Arthur!
I don't know for the technical details, I'm pretty sure more proficient Maseratisti can answer your question! By the way do you know that this engine equipped the tipo 151, the gorgeous Ghibli(the first of course) and...your Bora :)
A very interesting site for you

Pat myZisfantastic Hey, cool. Thank you for the link Pat, very interesting. Yes, you are right - the 4.9L V8 in my Bora comes from a line of engines originating with this 450S. Very cool to have such history behind me when I drive…. This V8 also powered all Quattroporte's, the Mexico, the Indy and the Khamsin too. Cheers, -Art

+Pat myZisfantastic Actually there were two related Maserati V8s. The original race engine had gears for its cam drive and finger followers. The cam covers had two five nut rows of fasteners. For the street engine they reverted to quieter chains and bucket tappets and the cam covers lost half the fastenings. Only one water pump instead of twin ones, and wet sump for the road. Eventually the last Tipo 151s with the breadvan body (sometimes called 154) got the Lucas Fuel Injection that was similar to the road car. So the real differences were by then mainly in the quality of the crankshafts and other internals and the assembly attention and dyno tuning.

Synchros are only in action when the shift lever is moving and the clutch pedal is depressed, so no, the gear noise is not due to the synchros.
It is likely due to all the gears that drive the overhead cams, oil pump, distributor.

If you like cars go and buy a cool one now. In another ten years they will all be banned. The cheapest real performance car ( a real racing car adapted for the road, not the other way around) is a Caterham. Just saying guys, you will lose your chance forever if you don't do it!
