I had been wishing later albums touched closer to TFOI for a long time but after some time they’ve grown on me. Overcome and For We Are Many are both truly great albums. FWAM is unfortunately very underrated. I remember this coming out around the same time as Rise Against’s Endgame which ,while in another musical world entirely, I also wasn’t very receptive to at first. Going back and listening to both now gives me foot in mouth disease since they’re great albums. We also have to consider physical limitations as our favorite artists age and their ideals or interests change too.

16:55 i’d sit here an argue over whether property rights make you want to be productive, but you can’t point to intentionally defunded social programs and tell me the privatization of industries like health care and rail make them any better. You also can’t convince me that the amount we subsidize and bail out big business in this country doesn’t feel like I am being robbed out of my pockets just so I can price gouged by the same guy I just paid to stay afloat. I like libertarians, because they intrinsically understand the problems with bad government. It’s frustrating though when the only solution is “well don’t bail them out this time”, and don’t regulate them. We’ve been cutting back regulation since the 1950’s ever since the New Deal ended, it’s only been making it worse. When we bail them out there are no consequences for those involved or any look at regulations that lead to banks having to default. Meanwhile, people with capital ratchet up their wages and lower yours by gutting unions and shipping jobs overseas. The conclusion the leftist has made was that another New Deal wouldn’t make a difference, and all those social democracies in Europe won’t last. Nobody who is a serious leftist should pretend that New Deal America or Social Democracy Europe in perpetuity is the actual goal. Social democracies always backslide because of the interests of Capital. The reason why all of the kids are leftists is because on average we are horrifically poor or our hard fought wealth is precarious, and we want to know why.
This interview was excellent. I've always been interested to hear more from Phil about his opinions because I've always found him to be thoughtful and well-spoken. You provided a good atmosphere that just sounded like 2 people talking. No showboating, no interrupting each other. Very nicely done!
Love Phil. He's always his own man & is truly a free thinker. Great chat. Packaged non conformity- soooo true!! And yes, people don't want to do hard things or face reality.
I’d say he’s wrong about everything as far as his views about the left but he’s entitled to his opinion. It was still cool to hear about the music and history of the scene though.
It blows my mind that i would've completely missed out on ATR & The Great that is Phil Labonte if i hadnt started watching the TimCast IRL, of all things. I began listening to Phil's political views and additions to the political discussions brought forth on TimCast long before i finally discovered ATR & their outstanding catalog of music, most recently including "Divine" & their latest release, which im astounded to discover that i nearly missed out on completely! Now making up for lost time with a huge amount of gratitude, both towards ATR & Phil's well-expressed viewpoints on many different subjects, with a fervor like someone who has newly discovered one of the world's greatest wonders. Thanks for doing this interview, and look out world, im catching up! 😂
Stoked to hear the upcoming ATR. Refreshing to have someone like Phil out there willing to stick his neck out with his beliefs in a way that is approachable. Much respect.
"... or they have health conditions, and that is true and real that does not change the fact that as a society it is detrimental to your overall Society to not to tell people it is acceptable to allow your body to Fall Apart that is not acceptable that is not something that Society should do that is not a perspective that Society should encourage.." As a "libertarian" and NOT telling people what to do. To me, sounds like; "I am telling you what to do."
This was refreshing - none of that, "you associated with these people stuff!" There was no gotcha stuff, just the two of you having a genuine fun conversation. Love this. One thing though.... all those albums after The Fall of Ideals...
I always like rounding these guys out, because we often assume who these musicians are without their own actual input. I was fortunate to book these guys a couple times at our club, the last time being just a few months before Olli's passing. Phil was always gracious and engaged with our staff, a lot of whom on security/loading teams are veterans. It's nice to know there are legit personalities in the industry and can have adult conversations with folks they do not agree on 100% of topics about.
I'm from Europe, EU country. And we DON'T have free healthcare LOL. How some Americans think, that we have? If I want to start my own business and I will work for my business...then I have to give almost 60% to government and healthcare. Also my country was a part of USSR...and I have even bigger question - why some Americans think that it's great to be under communist regime?
It’s obvious this guy is a fan of James Lindsay: when he started talking about Hegel, Rousseau, Marx, the Dialectic, and the Gnostic religion of the left. Next ATR album would probably have some interesting themes.
"The general consensus of the left is that everyone not a communist is a fascist." That's a total straw man. Super hyperbolic. The same could be said about the right thinking everyone to the left of them (like Biden, who would be considered right wing here in the UK) is a socialist.
@@mattbarker1411 Of course it's a fucking straw man. I literally don't know a single person who thinks that everybody who isn't a commie is a fascist, and I have many friends on the left. It's a total lie.
Phil is amazing! Incredibly thoughtful human being! People could learn alot from him if they got their head outta their own ass. Rock on, Finn, and thank you for bringing Phil onto the show!
Phil is awesome, super talented & an independent thinker!! I've seen him on Timcast IRL & found him to be a thoughtful, rational voice of reason & freedom. Thanks for having him on!! 💯 👍😍
I was hooked that first minute! Deeper interviews and bigger guests constantly, nice work. Never realized how many views I shared with Phil. He's just using common since which is ironically quite scarce today.
Thanks Finn, that was a really thoughtful exchange, so rare in today's climate. I was really disheartened when at the end of the interview you stated that you were fearful "to say anything unpopular". That sums up current day discourse and it is so unAmercan to have to feel that way. The 1st amendment is to protect speech we dislike and vehemently disagree with. I appreciate you taking a risk and having Phil on your channel. I think your fanbase is with you, any dissent will come from people who heard Phil was on your channel. Those voices are the mob and they should be ignored. Cheers.
This Darkened Heart was an album I couldn’t stop listening too and influenced my taste more than any other. Will never be another that important to me!
Politically, Phil and I are opposites. I used to be put off by his right wing idealogies, but I saw him on Timcast (I hate the show the guy is wrong about everything, just watched for Phil) and they were talking about George Floyd and they were debating it and Tim said "the worst part is they're gonna use this to push their narrative" or something along those lines, and Phil replied "no, the worst part is that someone lost their life." and that made me respect him. He's a fundamentally decent person, which is something rare these days regardless of political leanings.
I agree. Phil has what I’d consider abhorrent views but he seems to have some sort of moral compass. If you haven’t seen the interview he did with the guy from Trapt, it kind of gave me the same feeling. Again I fundamentally disagree with Phil on almost everything but he’s not a moron.
@@btgkg9639 he makes good points at times, and I appreciate that he criticizes his own side at times, but he also makes insane predictions that are entirely unfounded on data. One example is, he predicted Trump would beat Biden in a 49, possibly even 50, state landslide in the 2020 election. Literally every pollster, even the ones who are very right wing, gathered data that indicated that Trump was gonna lose by a very large margin.
Well!! I always thought myself of a conservative…now I think I’m libertarian 🤣 bc I feel & think exactly how Phil describes his views. I love this interview. I like learning of the history of Phil. The ties he has to KSE and SF…so cool. I like learning neat things about ppls history like that…
ATR was one of the bands I really got into when I was a teen, they and Arch Enemy I believe I think are the bands that got me into more extreme music! I kinda lost track of them after "A War You Cannot Win". A couple years ago I heard that Phil was really politically vocal on social media, I heard he was a liberal and a lot of people really complained. I didn't pay much attention to it but now that I listened to this podcast, I thought it was not as bad as people said it was. I would place myself somewhere in the progressive side and I thought this conversation was really cool, with a lot of great points and arguments. It is refreshing honestly.
"Definition of tyranny: that which is legal for the government but illegal for the citizenry". Thomas Jefferson. My son turned me on to this episode to introduce me to your channel. He is an aspiring musician who plays guitar and writes songs so that's how he found you, I think. Glad he did. With the things you see on main stream news you would think there are no libertarian or moderate conservatives in the music/entertainment scene today.
I dont know Phil or his music , but , hearing him wax on in the tim pool show , about anti marx , anti marcuse , anti paulo freire , is music to my ears ... We both must listen to Dr James Lindsay a lot , a great mentor about this evil .
I will publicly admit, I was an ignorant close-minded metal fan in my twenties, well and thirties lol. I was wrong about you Finn. Much love, dude. You guys and your knowledge of music just reminds me of old friends. My old band Raising Cain also played Milwaukee Metal Fest. Tons of awesome metal records were for sale here; I think I copped an early Children of Bodom Disc and Dimmu Borgir. Can we bring Myspace Back?? WE NEED a Music Social media platform again. Do you remeber Once Beloved? Kse Jr. Awesome record. PEACE.
I like this guy, the libertarian and right wing movement annoy the fuck out of me for how reactionary and copy/paste it it, but this guy actually think for himself and have real arguments.
Being a young teen is thinking metalcore is fancy death metal. Being an adult is realizing Metalcore is actually just heavy pop music and you really meant deathcore the whole time.
I don't agree on many political stances with Labonte, but I have to admit he's very respectful with other people's position, being open to debate, this podcast being an example. Phil is far from being an extremist, unlike some certain musician who assaulted the congress, believing he was a tough guy and then he shitted himself in prison...
generally respectful, but he seems to generalize leftists a bit. I respect him but disagree politically. I have no problem with him because he isn't giving any hate to others. The ones on the right that give me issues are the more extreme ones, the ones bashing gays, promoting racism, trying to make abortion illegal, etc.
@@chloeryanvtuber He’s for sure the type of person who thinks liberals and leftists are the same thing and thinks socialism and communism are when the government does stuff.

Beautiful meeting of men wearing hats indoors
AJ really is the best meme generator. THEY’RE TURNING THE FREAKIN FROGS GAY
I love Phil's dedication to the traditional baseball hat while us sinners are down here wearing fitted hats.
But for real, great interview!
😂 he's been rocking it since the fall of Ideals, man! He'll never abandon it!
Dude. This is a great interview and makes me like your channel even more. Thank you.
Best content I’ve seen from PRMBA, without a doubt!
Another great facetime with another cool dude, thanks so much, Finn!
Love Phil. He's always his own man & is truly a free thinker. Great chat. Packaged non conformity- soooo true!! And yes, people don't want to do hard things or face reality.
The ones that don't profess they are a free thinker are usually, the free thinkers! So yes I agree!
Really enjoyed hearing Phil go in detail about his thoughts
Stoked to hear the upcoming ATR.
Refreshing to have someone like Phil out there willing to stick his neck out with his beliefs in a way that is approachable.
Much respect.
"... or they have health conditions, and that is true and real that does not change the fact that as a society it is detrimental to your overall Society to not to tell people it is acceptable to allow your body to Fall Apart that is not acceptable that is not something that Society should do that is not a perspective that Society should encourage.."
As a "libertarian" and NOT telling people what to do.
To me, sounds like; "I am telling you what to do."
This was refreshing - none of that, "you associated with these people stuff!" There was no gotcha stuff, just the two of you having a genuine fun conversation. Love this. One thing though.... all those albums after The Fall of Ideals...
Also I love hearing this side of Finn! We need more
I always like rounding these guys out, because we often assume who these musicians are without their own actual input.
Two Weeks was the track that got me into them at all. They write pretty good stuff and I'm always willing to listen to their new music
Great video. It was great seeing people talk about difficult subjects and be completely reasonable
I'm from Europe, EU country. And we DON'T have free healthcare LOL. How some Americans think, that we have? If I want to start my own business and I will work for my business...then I have to give almost 60% to government and healthcare.
Also my country was a part of USSR...and I have even bigger question - why some Americans think that it's great to be under communist regime?
marxist infiltrators got in the education and political system and that movement now bore its fruit
I’ll answer both your questions. We have very very bad public education that does not teach history, political theory, or geography.
@@EphraimIgnacio that is true
Cool for Finn to talk to this dude. I think he's totally full of it, but he's allowed to be.
Loved you having Phil on and giving him a voice. Great insight as always!
It’s obvious this guy is a fan of James Lindsay: when he started talking about Hegel, Rousseau, Marx, the Dialectic, and the Gnostic religion of the left. Next ATR album would probably have some interesting themes.
"The general consensus of the left is that everyone not a communist is a fascist."
That's a total straw man. Super hyperbolic. The same could be said about the right thinking everyone to the left of them (like Biden, who would be considered right wing here in the UK) is a socialist.
The right doesnt have antifa equivalent for socialists lol.
It's not a strawman, you just don't have an argument.
@@mattbarker1411 Of course it's a fucking straw man. I literally don't know a single person who thinks that everybody who isn't a commie is a fascist, and I have many friends on the left. It's a total lie.
Tbf most democrats are admitted socialists, sometimes even outright communists
surprise bottom tier musical act in the genre is a reactionary with 4the grade south park libertarianism and thinks the dems are leftist.
Jason's shit is so good. Can't wait for an All That Remains album with him writing songs.
It was brining back some fond memories talking bout the 90's hardcore/punk/metal scene in Western mass
I was hooked that first minute! Deeper interviews and bigger guests constantly, nice work. Never realized how many views I shared with Phil. He's just using common since which is ironically quite scarce today.
Hands down the best conversation you've ever had on this channel!
Will never be another that important to me!
gen Xers and centrism go together like cereal and milk
true. I like to call it GenX "pragmatism" how many of us have good friends with people on "opposite sides of the aisle"? we get along just fine.
I never thought of it that way but you’re right. Gen X has a VERY balanced ideology which to me, makes the most sense. Who wants to be off balance?
Zillennial here and I envy Gen X in that regard.
Used to see Phil all the time at fat cat in springfield ma. Those were the best days. He deserves everything that comes his way.
That’s some real shit.
Common Tim Pool L
"the worst part is they're gonna use this to push their narrative" is the second worst thing of course. Statue, circus etc.
I agree. Phil has what I’d consider abhorrent views but he seems to have some sort of moral compass. If you haven’t seen the interview he did with the guy from Trapt, it kind of gave me the same feeling. Again I fundamentally disagree with Phil on almost everything but he’s not a moron.
Tim is definitely not wrong about everything, in fact the majority of what Tim talks about is a Corinth especially everything on Covid and Biden.
I like learning neat things about ppls history like that…
I think phil calls himself a conservative now. He didn't go that far with the libertarian arc
A legendary metalcore band right here 🤘
Phil was also in The Marines.
I have similar political leanings as Phil therefore I enjoyed much that was said on this podcast.
That tends to be how it goes lol
I love this! It normalizes the hard rock/heavy metal crowd talking about political issues that effect everyone.🤘
Oh wow, I work at a gym and made the playlist and six is literally playing right now lmao
Oh hell yeah Finn. Way to have Phil on!
Oh man, I’ll never forget about arch enemy
Im late to the party but that was a great talk session, love Phil
Phil is like *we live in a society* and I'm all for it. Great podcast!
Such a great interview. Thank you.
Thanks for having phil!! He rocks literally 😂
Awesome interview, definitely enjoyed every minute of it!
Props Fin on an awesome guest
Dude, this conversation was fantastic! Loved every second 🤘
I dont know Phil or his music , but , hearing him wax on in the tim pool show , about anti marx , anti marcuse , anti paulo freire , is music to my ears ...
We both must listen to Dr James Lindsay a lot , a great mentor about this evil .
Phil is such a cool dude I'd love to meet and talk to him myself he's so down to earth
Thanks guys! I always like to hear old time metal stories and I learned about a few bands too. Good stuff.
“Free thinker” is kinda like “nice guy” in that if you really are one, you shouldn’t have to tell people you that you are
This needed to be said
Damn man I feel so bad now I was so wrong about Phil; What an articulate, polite, intelligent guy he is, guess I was brainwashed back then...
At this point Phil is the only reason I continue to watch Timcast.
Same. Also I like Ian
PEACE.
Give me that early-mid 2000's metalcore sound back, I'm all for it! \m/, also.. Phil's based, good man!
I remember the old Shadows Fall days. Phil is the best. Met him a couple times and he's a good dude.
I like this guy, the libertarian and right wing movement annoy the fuck out of me for how reactionary and copy/paste it it, but this guy actually think for himself and have real arguments.
As a libertarian and Phil Labonte fan myself, reactionary social conservative libertarians aren't our friends.
This is why the Left annoy the fuck out of me. Conformity packaged as nonconformity is the Left.
You didn't sin finn. You had a constructive conversation with someone who seems like a genuine dude.
I'm looking forward to the Don't Tread on Me podcast by Finn Mckenty.
Don’t step on my snake
No step on snek🐍
Being a young teen is thinking metalcore is fancy death metal.
Being an adult is realizing Metalcore is actually just heavy pop music and you really meant deathcore the whole time.
I don't agree with everything said but Phil made excellent points and arguments. This was great.
Great convo dudes
I don't agree on many political stances with Labonte, but I have to admit he's very respectful with other people's position, being open to debate, this podcast being an example. Phil is far from being an extremist, unlike some certain musician who assaulted the congress, believing he was a tough guy and then he shitted himself in prison...
Dude literally tweeted “We shit all over commies and it was glorious,” to promote this interview. Respectful to whom?
generally respectful, but he seems to generalize leftists a bit.
@@chloeryanvtuber I think we can pass that bias. People that are outspoken on one side, usually tends have some prejudiced to the other side, but besides that, he has never showed any intolerant behavior
