What did you think of the knitting patterns that I included in this video? Do you love them? 😍 Do you hate them? 🤨 Do you know of any other weird, wacky & silly knit patterns that I didn't include? Let me know!👇🏻
@ThePoplargirl I think knitted swimsuits actually are not as bad as you might imagine they are. I saw a video here on UA-cam of someone who knitted her own bathing suit and tried out bathing in hers. Also, it must have been the best material to swim in at the time. Elastic & nylon wasn't yet as widely available and I think I would rather swim in a stretchy knitted swimsuit than a woven version.
Roxane Richardson knit a sweater extremely similar to that first sweater you featured! She recorded her whole progress on her UA-cam channel. She’s doing a long term project where she knits a sweater from each decade from the 1890s to the 1990s. I highly recommend her channel to anyone interested in vintage knits (or knitting in general).
I went to the races at Ascot in 1975, and saw a woman wearing a pant suit made in filet crochet in a very very big gauge! The colour was aubergine (or eggplant)
@@missmatti I suppose it was by some stylist, but the holes of the filet crochet were so big that it can’t have taken too long to make. Even the fitting must have been simple enough, she was rather slim.
The crochet pattern video will come sometime in December 😉 And you are spot on with that the 70s has the worst crochet patterns it’s gonna be hard to pick the best candidates! 😅
Thank you for sharing this awesome style inspiration. I know what I will be wearing this winter... lampshade hat, moppets and an "I'm a luxury" jumper. I love it. 😄
These are fantastic! If Ii could find the time, I would make some of these as gifts to see how many people I could get to wear them. I would love to see a crochet version too
Did you see the 1910 polka dot jacket in knit? I've only seen it in crochet. It's one that I've been wanting to knit for a long time, but didn't want to have to figure out the conversion from crochet to knit.
Oh no.. it was crochet all along you made me realise now! 😩 I cannot believe I missed that. 🙈 I will let you know if I come across a knit version or if I decide to transform it myself at some point. I think it would look cuter in knit personally.
You might be interested in Roxanne Richardson here on UA-cam. She is knitting through the decades and I think she did the first one you showed. You'll love her 20s one too
Ooooh.... that sounds totally up my street! 😍 I have never heard of her but I will definitely check her out. I loved Angela Clayton's sewing through the decades so I am sure I will love this as well. Thank you!
Oh my goodness, what is it with the 1980’s?! This was a great video diving into a section of crafting I don’t normally head into. I am so glad that you made this! Thank you for the laughs (and the awkward nipple tassels I can’t unsee).
Haha.. you are welcome! 😄😅 I am so glad you enjoyed it (and for giving me the inspiration to make this video!). Yes, I do not really know what happened to the 80s? 😝But at least we can get some laughs out of some of the designs 🤪
Heya MissMatti - I’m enjoying this wacky knitwear. the pineapple and banana sweater guy is Christopher Biggins - he’s an actor and entertainer in UK - he was in a lot of things like the original Rocky Horror Picture Show and on tv
Wow! 😯 I didn't know that, but that explains why he always looked familiar to me. I love Rocky Horror Picture Show and have watched it many times in my life 😆
The late 1960s was known for the weirdest knitting trend, Instant Knitting or Supersonic Knitting. The sizes of the needles are quite big. 35 to 50 mm to be accurate
@@missmatti Yes it is, however I'll be the first to give you both advice and fair warning. The reason why is that the gauge for the stitches needs to be balanced with the sizes of knitting needles used.
I have a lot of 'Picture Knitting' (intarsia) books from the 1970s and 80s, and I believe 'Knit Wits' is one of them. I think it involved Gyles Brandreth, who was also the editor(?) of several other books in a similar vein, which I also own.
@@missmatti He wrote, or co-write, Knitability and Novelty Knits, as well as Wit Knits - and IIRC was a guest writer in a few compilations. Novelty Knits is the most recent one and published in aid of a worthy charity. I like to use the graphs of the pictures as a basis for lap blankets which I make for charity; if you need a lap blanket because you're in a wheelchair, can't walk etc, how much better to have a fun one than a boring one eh! I found the books in charity shops for very little money.
Please do a crochet video and I'm betting the 1970s are the strangest when it comes to wacky and weird. The 1970s was about the craziest and most contrasting and mismatched colours and patterns.
In the 1980's I was a teenager. Here in Australia we had a knitwear designer called Jenny Lee who created some great knitwear. Her designs all featured something Australian.
I was born in 1948. I loved the fashions of the 1950s. However, the 1960's had a lot of wild, weird and wacky Mod fashions. Until the 1960s, we did not wear prints, plaids, and stripes together. I have wondered what become of all those see through croched dresses, bathing suits and other garmets of the 1960s. There was even Optical Art fashions and home/office deco during the1960s. The 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s never got as wild, weird and wacky as the 1960s.
😂 Love it! Thank you for sharing! Gotta interview my parents about this as I never lived during the 60s, and what I have seen in knitting books since etc has been more the preppy classic styles. With exceptions of the crazy crochet that seem to have gone mad late 60s early 70s it seems. When it comes to non-knitted clothing I have heard about a lot of weird 60s trends from paper dresses to the space fashion.
Wow! Do you know if they include crochet projects in their publishings? I am still looking for 1980s and 1990s crazy crochet patterns for a future crochet version of this video.
There must have been plastic eyeballs on the 80's tentacle sweater patterns to complete the obvious VISION of that mad genius 80's designer, obviously it was a poor editorial decision, and some intern snipped them off. Pity.
What did you think of the knitting patterns that I included in this video? Do you love them? 😍 Do you hate them? 🤨 Do you know of any other weird, wacky & silly knit patterns that I didn't include? Let me know!👇🏻
I liked the over the top swimsuit. But the nipple sweater looked like a sea anemone to me. It took the prize for the worst creation, I think.
Sea anemone 😂 I think a lot of the others can be worn with some modifications depending on your style, but that nipple sweater is just 😣🤯
Can't imagine wearing a knitted swimsuit! Wouldn't it sag terribly when you got in the water? And getting the sand out would be tricky!!!

The swimsuit wasn’t a knitting pattern actually. But i’ve seen vintage knitted bathing suits patterns before and, yeah. They could be a lot.
Yes -- your top definitely meets the requirements for wacky! Well done
🤪 thank you!

I believe it was precisely that one, it turned out gorgeous and a lot less stylised and more dainty than the illustration leads to believe
Cool video! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you liked it! 🤩 Thanks for watching! 💗
Crochet would be good, I would say the 1970's is a good period for whacky patterns. x
Haha, yes the 1970s offered so many wacky patterns! 🙃 Especially when it came to crochet!
I went to the races at Ascot in 1975, and saw a woman wearing a pant suit made in filet crochet in a very very big gauge! The colour was aubergine (or eggplant)
Wow! Quite unique Ascot choice! 😅That pant suit must have been quite something! Do you think she made it herself? It must have taken so long. 😮
@@missmatti I suppose it was by some stylist, but the holes of the filet crochet were so big that it can’t have taken too long to make. Even the fitting must have been simple enough, she was rather slim.
Haha got it! So quite see through? 😂
Love this! Would love to see crochet patterns!
I think it would be the 70s that created the worst crochet patterns ever!
The crochet pattern video will come sometime in December 😉 And you are spot on with that the 70s has the worst crochet patterns it’s gonna be hard to pick the best candidates! 😅
@@missmatti I lived through it. I remember the horrors. There are scars… 😋
And YES, please do a crochet video too. 👍👍👍😄😄😄
Yay! Crochet is gonna be fun! 😄 It seems to offer a lot more creative and playful designs in general even in the early 1900s.
Thank you for sharing this awesome style inspiration. I know what I will be wearing this winter... lampshade hat, moppets and an "I'm a luxury" jumper. I love it. 😄
Haha you are gonna look so fab! 😅 You only need to do TikTok now to show it off and start the trend 🤪
Hi from South African vloggers 🇿🇦 😀 ❤️ 🌍
.
Hello there! 👋🏻 Thanks for popping by 🤗💕
I would love to see a weird crochet patterns video.
Yay! As so many seem to want a weird crochet pattern video I think I will make one soon then.. 😉
I grew up in the 80s, I lived this lol
I love it! 😂 I lived it a bit too, but I was too young to remember most of it.
Ooh I love these weird and wacky finds! Please do a crochet version!!
So glad you liked them! 😄 I think you might enjoy the crochet video in the future even more as well! 😜
I would like to see crochet patterns. I think the 70's would have a lot of examples.
Awesome! 🤩 I have finally filmed the video! Coming sometime in the next couple of weeks 😁
These are fantastic! If Ii could find the time, I would make some of these as gifts to see how many people I could get to wear them.
I would love to see a crochet version too
Oooh! That’s such a fun idea! 🤩 Crochet version is in the making - hopefully that video will be up by the end of the month! 🤞🏼

I've seen the Elsa Schaparelli jumper in a museum, and it is made with such heavy yarn, I really expected it to be way lighter. I loved it!
The V&A?! I have seen it there too.
At some exhibition in a museum in Zurich... Random I know 😂
Haha.. yes that's random! But they often borrow items or have travelling fashion exhibitions. 😊

I will have to look into this - thank you! Sounds like a pretty chunky project 😝
@@missmatti Yes it is, however I'll be the first to give you both advice and fair warning. The reason why is that the gauge for the stitches needs to be balanced with the sizes of knitting needles used.
You should take a look at Linda Jackson and Jenny Kee both Australian knit wear designers who were huge on the 1980s. I love their work.
Oooh... I will check them out - thank you for the recommendation! 😄

You are not wrong! The 1970s was definitely a hand full when it came to crazy & strange crochet patterns. 😜
It's either an owl with a moustache or an unclear Groucho Marx.
😂 love you interpretations! It might actually be an owl with a mustache 😅
Is it 1920 whacky crochet
No, but a good guess! I mean they delivered a knitted lampshade hat?! 🤷🏼♀️ It’s the 70s and late 60s that offered the most crazy crochet!
