    How to draw tips on shading or rendering with hatching and crosshatching as a part of learning how to draw with pen and ink. I used a Lamy Safari fountain pen.
    How to use line variation, as in line weight is my main focus here. How to vary line weight or thickness to convey light and shadow and describe volume.
    I used a part of a drawing by Hendrick Goltzius as a reference for pointing out some useful techniques you should practice or at least be aware of when drawing with pen and ink using a fountain pen, dip pen or other instrument.
    You can use this as a guide for how to draw a muscular arm and hand with fingers and all. Its also good practice to copy from people who seem to have a good handle on pen and ink or any other drawing medium you want proficiency in.
    Happy Drawing :-)

    Thanks for your patient presentation - I learned a lot. I've never done cross hatching but admire it and love the purity of ink drawing and painting. I'm inspired to begin, most likely doing simple geometric forms to begin with. It looks like a very satisfying form of art.

    • @pugesis
      @pugesis 6 років тому +14

      Jonathas Ferreira Actually, this is a common misconception. 'Muscle memory' is not learning that occurs in the muscles, rather it is synonymous with motor learning and procedural memory, both of which are entirely controlled within the brain.

    3 years after upload i am have just found this video and its really clear and simple and i never knew something so simple as crosshatching could add so much depth and detail to a drawing, only been drawing for around a week and because of channels like these i have such an understanding of the body its great, like everyone says put in the time and you get it, 2 to 3 hours every night and i already feel good about drawing, tnx for the video man if your reading this.

    Dear dude.. I don't know HOW I never came across to your channel or a single video so far :P but take it as a compliment because I started seeing your videos after I got interested in Leonardo Da Vinci's style for shading and finding shapes..
    I think I've been drawing since I was like 3 or less, then went to art school with the SOLE PURPOSE of finding the instructions to become good at drawing and painting things, people, animals, places and everything else realistically but never found that knowledge.
    Wish I had internet back then and people like you to teach art lovers. So a huge Thank You for posting these.. they're turning out to be a great help!! :)

    When I first saw your S line it was a realization of something dynamic. This video gives it's practical application and brings new life to something that might be very corny and basic in crosshatching application, like what I'm doing now. It creates connection with great subtlety. The power of this can't be underestimated. Thanks again Big Al.

    I can't tell you how much this has helped me. I'm still learning, and my shading has been sloppy and unconvincing. Watching this I can now see it's because my hatching was added arbitrarily without any thought to the lines following the contours. Thank you so much for this!

    I've always felt that lines going with the forms (up and down, left to right) describe pattern, texture, or physical attributes. And then lines that describe lighting would go across the forms. I know this is difficult to manage if light is coming from directly above or below, but then again, I don't have to draw this stuff.

    Lamy fountain pens all take the same type of nib. The Extra fine nib is the most expensive about $8 other nibs can be purchased for $2 -$3. Tere is one Lamy model which does not accept the standard Lamy nib.

    Прекрасный штрих, отличная техника рисунка. Жаль, коментарий на английском. Отличный рисовальщик.

    i had given up on cross hatching... thought it didn't have depth... you changed my mind sir...

      Dont give up

      Well, it depends how you use it. In my opinion, cross hatching can only take you so far, that's why I like to just use a greyscale, using different amounts of pressure and different pencil hardness', then blending them together to get a smooth look. I don't really like the look of crosshatching even if it's good for shading.

    nice point made at 11:30...the lines should be evenly spaced, not messy. Also I would love to see you start with a medium , diluted ink, then go on to the darker. Thats how the old boys worked back in the 1600 and 1700's. Esp. albrecht durer

    this was wonderful - thank you - I'd like to see this done on a non muscular arm where the muscles aren't so pronounced ( say a fat arm ) so see where the shading might go

    Heres a question for ya Alphonso, have you ever done a biomechanical drawing? You know like H.R. Giger style or something? And do man made objects also have a line of balanace or is that only in nature since I dont quite understand that line of balance thingy even after seeing the video on it.

    • @alphonsodunn
      @alphonsodunn  10 років тому

      Alphonsos DaMan no, not familiar. Sorry. The line of balance is more obvious in natural forms but the concept of complimentary opposites is found virtually everywhere
