I think it’d be better if the Qilin bowed to Jacob first, never said Muggles were excluded from Qilin powers. It would change some Wizarding views on Muggles and contradict Grindelwald’s opinions and plans against Muggles.
Yes, after I watched the movie I thought that the chilin should’ve bowed to Jacob because first he’s like the kindest and purest person in the entire movie and also of course it would’ve proved grindewald wrong
@@JordanWylde_ From the way they described it at the table, I thought "No one is that pure of heart anymore" Like Jacob is sweet, he's ny fav....but he was ready n willing to kill grindlewald if he could. The one detail I loved is that when the new leader of chosen, she did not raise her wand against GW at all, she stood there n didnt choose violence.
No lie when I saw the movie I really thought either Jacob or Newt would be chosen by the creature. Just because they explained that the creature would go to someone pure of heart and honestly both characters definitely represented that. But I liked the movie either way ☺️
I did too, but something I liked about that scene is how the creature bows to Dumbledore, A man filled with guilt and regret from what he's done in the past and doesn't see himself as worthy, and he declines and begs it to pick someone else
Jacob has no magic and. Knows near nothing about the magical world how is he supposed to lead magical people and govern the wizard in world ? Newt biggest fear 😧 is to end up like his father working behind some desk, it’s been made pretty clear he’s no leader
@@sarickacampbell2642 right, but it doesn’t mean he has to lead??? Look at dumbledore, he literally said no. To have Jacob bowed at and then say no would be the best ending
There's nothing that says another wizard can't block a killing curse that's being directed at someone else. Harry manages to block Voldemort's last killing curse, his expelliarmus collided with the killing curse which rebounded.
@@anonymousgaslighter345 The books only said that Harry was the only one to survive a killing curse. But that's surviving one that actually hit you. There's nothing about blocking it before it reaches you (or having someone else block it for you).
My take on Jacob seeing Hogwarts is kind of like the vampire lore. He was invited in by a wizard (s) into Hogwarts. Therefore can enter and see the castle, interact with people, etc. This also not the first time we see a muggle in Hogwarts (at least movies), Myrtle's parents are there in a flashback.
I definitely agree with this, because what if something important happened OR a muggleborn was picked for the triwizard tournament? Who would come to see them in the 3rd task?
I think they went to a Muggle for the suitcases because they wanted to "confuse" Grindelwald since he had those visions. Using magic would’ve been too obvious and the magic could’ve been tracked.
Also, and no one seems to get this point, using the Gemino spell would replicate the full suitcase and all that was inside right? It replicates the object exactly as it is so the whole thing would be replicated, animals inside included. They wanted normal muggle suitcases with the outside matching perfectly with Newt's, hence why she went to a muggle shop.
I think they ask a mugle to replicate the suitcases because they're all under menace. If the one who duplicate them by Magic dies, they would desapear like the fish that Lili gave to Slughorn
I don't know if I alone in this, but I really enjoyed the scenes in Berlin. They were kinda scary if you consider what happened there in the real world, in that time period. It was a reflection. The cheering peoples, the flags, the symbols and the way Grindelwald moved through the street in that black car. All I though about during that scene was Hitler and WW ll. I think they played out brilliantly
ppl say voldemort is based on hitler's character i say different, Grindelwald had soo much common with hitler, those whitewashing speeches, manipulation, propaganda fascism it matches really well
@@conserztasfia0078 I kinda like/not like Grindlewald though because He’s a complicated character and not stone cold like Voldemort. But I can see where you coming from for sure 🙌🏿
@@lemonade_011 well I do like grindelwald but only as a villain Unlike some fans, I do Not think that he is right or deserves better Cz in inside he is pretty cold and manipulative which is why I think he is the perfect bad guy for this reason I think he got what he deserved And comparing voldemort and him is pretty dumb since both of them have different goals different character etc Voldemort wanted to be ever living where grindelwald wanted to take over the world he does not chase immortality nor he is afraid of dying Both of them are the perfect villains in their respective franchise
Harry never got an Obscurus because he never intentionally suppressed his magic, he never knew it existed until he met Hagrid. You can’t suppress something you don’t know exists.
Even if you thought Harry knew he had magic, he did nothing to suppress it anyway, he did magic all the time. Contrast to Ariana, who didn't do magic at all. The 2 situations are very different.
Everyone is complaining about how the Qilin should have bowed to either Jacob or Newt, and not Dumbledore. But, it made perfect sense to me because in the Harry Potter books, Dumbledore mentions how he was asked to rule the Wizarding World, that was that moment. Although the Qilin bowing to Jacob would have been valuable, at this time they had to stay along with the story.
And sometimes the people who are pure of heart are the ones who will not say it out loud or even consider it. Being HUMBLE is also an important thing to be.
actually Dumbledore did not reject ruling the wizarding world, he was indeed the Supreme Mugwump at some point. so basically he didn't want to be minister of magic cuz too much power but he was ok with taking the most powerful position in the wizarding world.
Dumbledore has never struck me as a pure of heart character, quite the opposite. He has good intentions but he's quite manipulative and has aspects of light and dark to him, which makes him so interesting to me. "Pure" is not a word I'd ever have thought of to describe him.
Just a thought about the briefcases and why they were made by a muggle and not magic: Magic always leaves a trace, and that may make the team easier to track?
I have a better one.. the briefcase had beasts inside it, maybe they couldn't do it because it.. but they could've explained it in a simple one line dialogue but they didn't.
@@marcusmiller517 maybe it was supposed to 7, to parallel with the 7 Potters, one each for Newt, Thesius, Bunty, Jacob, Lally, Tina, and Nagini, but seeing as Tina and Nagini are both unavailable, they ended up using only five of them.
The snitch not leaving the pitch is likely just a rule for when the game is being played. We know at least one instance in the books where it was outside the pitch. James Potter was showing off with it during "Snapes worst memory".
well the snitch can be modify, i dont remember if it was a japanese student or chinese but there was a seeker girl that play with a faster than normal snitch
Ngl I see a bit of a connection with Harry and Jacob. Harry got his invisibility cloak on Christmas, as well as other beloved things. Jacob, when he was asked how he got his wand by students at Hogwarts, he smiles and casually said he got it for christmas. Something really funny to me. Also I love how the name of the film "Secrets of Dumbledore" did not refer to just Albus, but all three living Dumbledores. We learned more about the blood pact made between Albus and Grindlewald. We learn a secret about Ariana. We Learn that Aberforth had loved and had a son, who was Credence. The title made it seem that it would just be Albus, but no it was about the family and many dark secrets they had as well as some brighter ones.
The point about the title was actually one of the reasons I was disappointed watching it for the first time though. I expected a movie revealing all of Albus’ backstory without realising that there are other Dumbledore characters involved too.
I think that the reason the killing curse didn't immediately kill the mother qilin was because of the magical properties of her scales. She's got the skin and scales of a dragon, they're very hard to kill.
Yes, it can be true! After all some theories do say that even a killing curse doesn't work on dragon, you have to fire killing curse on a wound or inside the mouth to kill it. It isn't officially confirmed but well..when many people agree on it..it does become kind of truth.
Also my theory is that the spell hit it so it didnt die so quickly. Like we saw bellatrix get hit in the heart and it was specially higlighted so i think that might have something to do with it. But i still think you have the correct one. The qilib should have still died faster.
That's a great theory! The spell might have travelled through its hide and scales more slowly than the thin skin of a human, or even an animal like a fox (the reference). A couple of the problems Morgan spotted could be answered by theories like this.
I agree with you. When I heard he said that muggles can't see or get into Hogwarts, I was confused why Lily's parents would like to send Lily to a school which is basically a ruined and dangerous site. It definitely need to be unveil from muggles' eyes when necessary or any muggle parents won't let their wizarding children enroll a ruined castle. I think muggles can see Hogwarts is basically a necessary element
The part when Grindelwald said "who will love you now" and Albus replied with " Im all alone" ^reminded me when Albus told Harry at King's Cross Station when he said "Dont pity the dead, pity the living and above all, all those that lived without love" Was he implying to himself too & not just to Voldemort
@@inkeriananas I mean between this movie and 1945 there is over a decade of time in between. Now that the blood pact is destroyed the question arises what took Dumbledore so long? Cowardice perhaps?
Especially because all of Eastern Europe, their governments, aurors, e.g. should have intervened for decades, Germany, Austria should have... hundreds of aurors couldn't form a circle and shoot spells at Grindelwald for up to 45 years? But a transfiguration teacher from some school can? In public, for hours, with witnesses, who chose not to help him for some reason??? Who the F sees all that and thinks "Well, clearly the one guy who stepped up alone, despite being in love with him is the true villain"???
14:16 Dumbledore casts a spell on the reflection in the shop’s glass, which turns to water and forms the droplet that hits Credence. That pulls them into like a Sharingan realm where they fight. I think it’s an illusion that works using reflections.
The only thing I could think of as to why the killing curse wouldn't kill instantly was that Voldemort tells Harry he has to mean it when casting an unforgivable curse in Order of the Phoenix
@@xochflobel3294 I was thinking this too…Is it that AK could be powerful enough to kill a human/wizard and not translate that way to all magical creatures? Maybe the Qilin - esp a fully grown one - is just that much more powerful?
@@curtis4982 it's clearly shown in hp that spells don't have same power on magical creatures. It's why stunning spells bounced off hagrid. So not sure why MF is that confused about it.
The part that annoys me about that scene is why not just shoot Newt. They clearly try to kill Newt in that same scene but can't use the element of surprise to take the easiest shot possible.
fun fact about Lally: Eulalie, her name, in Greece means someone who speaks a lot and Hicks is one, if not the most, talkative characters in this movie. Ones again realizing how brilliant Rowling is at giving details.
really took her a while to do research on names from different cultures *cough cough* cho Chang *cough* But respecting the origin and cultural significance of the qillin and Nagini would probably be asking to much
The dimension Dumbledore creates in his fight with Credence reminds me of the mirror dimension from Marvel, like Dr Strange makes. Maybe it is something similar to this but not (yet) properly explained?
Even though i "feel" like your negatives were just nick-pics, I like them a lot because it shows how much of a serious Harry Potter fan you are makes me trust and like your reviews and videos.
I love being able to come to a channel with a bunch of other Potterheads and digest this movie. I agree this was a good addition to the Wizarding World and I hope this movie does well enough to finish the series and not get canned.
The first series was through the eyes of a school age child. This new series features some of the most powerful adult wizards we’ve ever seen. It’s not to much of a stretch to assume these characters are capable of more than what teenage kids thought possible.
@@rpb4865 May be and I am just speculating here, could be that Credence could harm civilians, as he is a twat who cannot control magic, so he took him to another dimension and we saw how casually Dumbledore defeated Credence. That was not the case with the duel with Voldemort, another powerful wizard. They were in ministry of magic, so no civilians and no need to go into a magical dimension, plus Voldemort is incredibly powerful so he would most likely resisted it somehow. Dumbledore also had to put much more effort to duel with Voldemort. The alternative is simply the filmmakers added it because it looked cool.
@@rpb4865 because he wanted everyone to see Voldemort. He wasn’t using any offensive spells, he only defended trying to win time. No one believed that Voldemort was back so they had to see him with their own eyes
I think the Kirin bowed to Dumbledore because he would've made a good leader despite him thinking that power would consume him again...just speculation tho
Dumbledore is painfully aware of his flaws, which makes him actively avoid certain positions of power. That makes him worthy to lead. It's a different interpretation of "pure of heart" than the one most of us would think of, but I buy it.
I think this movie redeemed the series after the confusing Crimes of Grindelwald. It had less plots going on concurrently and it was fun, funny and moving. The encounters between Dumbledore and Grindelwald were of extremely good taste and sad at the same time. The Credence - Abeforth exchange was so emotional I really loved it. But I thing if people go in expecting to have it all explained it will feel like a blunter. The HP series had the books as a back up like a fill in the blanks. I had not read all books before watching the movies back then and the movies always felt somehow incomplete with unanswered questions. I would love if JK Rowling wrote actual books to support and explain it all but that will be impossible. I agree with the plot holes pointed out and it is disappointing but overall it made me want to see more. I don’t have expectations of this series ever be like the original HP but I felt the nostalgia and I liked to see other characters, other wizards from different countries, different beasts. Mads was such a great Grindelwald! I was bummed Johnny Depp left but then comparing the two he looks more of a leader than a crazy lunatic like Depp made him feel like. And since he is not the same villain type pure evil as Voldemort was it is perfect. Comparing the two villains and saying he’s not well written because he is not as evil as Voldemort is just plain dumb. It would be like copy cat if that was the case. Anyhow, I really hope there’s more to come and people go watch the movie! 🙂
I actually think that this movie was too straightforward and simple with it's story, I'd actually prefer it if the 4th and 5th movie were in the style of the 2nd movie more than them being in the style of the 3rd. Unpopular opinion, I know, but somehow this movie didn't impress me nearly as much as the 2nd one. Rather disappointing, if I may say so, and I am not the only person who holds that opinion, all people I talked with about this movie thought the same.
@@nick3805 Totally agree, was about to comment something similar. I didn't like 3rd movie story-wise (from a movie experience point of view), because it was all about this one event. Second point is, I feel like Dumbledore wasn't really that interesting, kinda expected the movie highlighting his ideological struggle between his book-personality and his extremist views as Grindelwald's friend. Maybe some flashbacks or memories in pensieves idk, that show Dumbledore emotionally struggling to fight for the good and not just Dumbledore being almost perfect as always. Tldr Dumbledore didn't really reveal any Secrets about himself
@@paulhk2727 Tbh I didn't even expect deep characters or anything, just... something at all. "Y'all are gonna go out and do useless things tryin' to confuse Grindelwald" What in JYP's Fish Tank is this?! The point of everything that happens in the movie except for that Walk of the Qilin thing at the end is that it is entirely pointless! Which idiot thought of this and even worse, who thought it was a good idea?! Now why exactly is Credence so special that you have to make 2 movies about him, what makes the Lestranges so important that you have an entire movie full of Lestrange stuff, how did they find out the relation to Credence, what makes Kama relevant after Letas death? The movie lacks an answer for all of those questions. Instead of answering them or at least going into that direction they make an intire movie whose point it is to be pointless. Absolutely great... ...NOT!
The movie was amazing. I was Internally screaming at all the Easter eggs I recognised during the movie. Also I feel like muggles who are invited to Hogwarts would be allowed to see the school
Saw this movie for my 70th birthday. I've always loved all of J. K.'s work and this was no exception. Loved every minute. Can' t wait for the next one!
I guess there is no HEIGHT limit tho. Or the limit is just very up in the sky. Also, in the very first movie Oliver Wood introduces Harry to Quidditch in an open courtyard, and he releases the Snitch to show Harry. And in the fifth book we learn James Potter nicked a snitch and let it fly around him across Hogwarts. And finally, the snitch given to Harry through Dumbledore's will that was perfectly able to fly anywhere it wanted.
I wounder if a lot of the rules got placed after this fight, since this fight was a big part in the magical world's history, it would make perfect sense some new regulations in place or changed. Totally agree with Qilin bow to Dumbledore, that did not match Dumbledore's characteristic at ALL!
I actually do. I mean think about after that moment his sister died he spent the test of his life trying to redeemed his mistake seeking power over ours. Instead he sought the power as a only means in protecting both worlds. Dumbledore from that moment didn't think of himself or one particular thing his always kept in mind everything for every one's sake not just the magical community.
@@Moesworld485 i agree with you? actually I liked that the quilin bowed to Dumbledore, because I thought of it as quite fitting. Usually the obvious isn’t always the „truth“ or an explanation in the wizardly world and when I thought about it, Dumbledore might not seem to be pure of heart instantly but maybe that’s not necessary. Maybe it’s his self reflection that makes him suit the quilins expectations - he knows that he isn’t all good and he knows that he’s made mistakes. The movie deals with his relationship to Grindelwald and yet, even though he’s loved him (still does a bit maybe?) he fights him and searches for a way to stop and defeat the only person that has made him feel not so alone in the world. Dumbledore acts accordingly to what he knows he’s ought to do and he takes the consequences and doesn’t go for what he could because of his powers or anything. This made me think that maybe that’s why the quilin bowed to him. He isn’t perfect - by all means, and not pure of heart, but he tries to good and acts with a great sense of altruism which maybe is essential to become purer by heart
@@Pauline-qn1et yes agreed. That's how I was seeing it. He was willing to do whatever it took atone for his passed mistake. In the Qilin eyes that was a pure and honorable quality worthy of leading the magical world to do good and be good. Plus I think they even stated at hog tavern that it would bow to the most pure not the purest or absolute pure person because no one can be that. Which means there would've have been any Supreme Mugwamp not the German guy wouldn't have been the Supreme Mugwamp either.
I completely agree. I figured after this fight and the next big one they have they will continue to add restrictions to how and when magic is used. I mean because they amended the law for Queenie and Jacob to get married at the end of the film. So by the time we meet Harry the times are different and so many precautions are in place to prevent constant incidents.
14:30 I think the reason Dumbledore didn't use that in the battle with Voldy in the ministry of magic was he needed the minister to be able to see that Voldemort was back.
The duel between Albus and Gellert really had me going . I was like oh shit it’s going down! Let’s go Albus! I’m not sure we will get any more fantastic beast movies but I hope we get the duel between Albus and Gellert . We deserve it!
What was good about this movie: - Adding significant lore to HP canon - World building in general - Actors - Visuals (as always) What I didn't like compared to the other movies: - The entire movie puts it's focus on one single event, taking away the shock effect, also making the internal story of the movie less interesting - Dumbledore's Secrets? What Secrets exactly? I didn't feel like there was anything significant revealed about Dumbledore, except for maybe him breaking the Unbreakable Vow, but nothing about his personality back then. I hoped it would be centered around Dumbledore more, I thought this movie would be about his internal ideological struggle (kind of what was revealed in Book 7), however right in the first scene it becomes clear he made that decision off screen already... So Dumbledore is yet just this almost perfect person, even though there is so much potential in making his character more interesting That's why I rate this movie lower than the other Fantastic Beasts movies
I assumed with Muggles and Hogwarts was you see the ruins and signs and then like a normal person just don't go in. If you actually went in, you would be in the castle, in the halls and meeting people. I just assumed Rowling thought people were over honest, like how the Adam West Batcave was a cave in full view of the road, just with a caution sign in front. Or the Tardis saying "For police use only" keeping people out.
@@LukeSky2207 Its not a physical barrier where you just bump into it like a Mime's invisible wall, but a bunch of spells to confuse both your sign and mind. Like if you managed to get way too close, the charms will start turning you to otehr directions or make you think of something to turn you away.
Dumbledore could also apparate in Hogwarts when no one else could I’m pretty sure off screen dumbledore probably removed the charm that keeps out muggles in preparation for his arrival
I think Dumbledore being able to apparate in hogwarts points out the Headmaster is able to do so, and... yea, kinda obvious, isn't it? And the charm that protects Hogwarts could be subjective to a Muggle being invited, since the body of Myrtle was retrieved by her muggle parents in Hogwarts.
I think there was supposed to be 7 decoy suitcases, the other two for Tina and Nagini in the original screenplay. We all know Rowling is fond of number seven
I LOVE the movie! Already went to the theater three times to see it, and as usual, saw new things each time. Now I’m on tenter hooks waiting to see if there will be a #4-please, please, please. So much unresolved. One thing I was delighted to see was the explanation of Credence/Aurelius’ impending death-not to be killed, but to die a natural death from his obscurus in as happy and loved situation as could be. A postscript edit: thank you producers and JKR for bringing back Steve Kloves. He just may have saved the series.
Hmmm, thinking on it, I think Newt’s assistant went to a Muggle shop for the suitcases to throw of Grindewald - his disdain for Muggles is so evident that I think that threw off his ability to see the future for her part of the plan.
Good video, though you missed another plot hole: This time around when Albus describes his duel with Grindelwald and Aberforth and Ariana's death he says Grindelwald "just laughed" making it seem like he didn't fight and use spells at all and in fact only Aberforth and Albus are responsible for her death, which of course is not the way the duel was described the first time around.
Mads Mikkelsen was definitely the better Grindelwald, in my opinion. It's easy to forget that Johnny Depp ever played him, and Jude Law was also impressive as a younger Dumbledore.
Completely disagree. Depp had the charisma to which his people were attracted. He seduced people's emotions with it and you could see it on screen: the scary, indefinable quality. Mikkelsen was just a cold, political gangster (emotionless) who spouted out his genocidal ideas, contradicting every sense of allure Depp had put into the character
I was surprised by his performance. I'm a huge Jonny Depp fan but I think Jude Law and Mads Mickelsen habve more Chemestry I like Johnnys look as Grindelwald more
Johnny Depp was the better Grindelvald Mads isn't as intimadating in the role as Johnny Depp was and WB were dumb to replace him and I still remember Johnny Depp was in the role like the best parts of the last film for me were with Johnny Depp and because they recast him this film is just not very good with out his performance and also this film may have opened 1st but it's really underperforming at the boxoffice
@@joshlyon1315 i love Depps acting too but i think Mads fits Grindelwalds role better. He is supposed to some kind of manipulating un-readable mastermind, and i think Depp as Grindelwald was more straight up evil.
I’ve got a thought about Credence and Dunbledore fight. The strong light ending the fight, was it Dunbledore’s Deluminator? Deluminator guided Ron to the correct path. Did it do the same thing to Credence? My theory is Credence was not change because Grindelwald scolded him, he changed because of the fight with Dunbledore which indirectly guided him the correct path to “come home”. Idk if it makes sense for you guys :D I definitely love the movie and need to watch it again and pay attention to more details proving my theory.
Not a perfect movie by any means, but perfectly enjoyable. I came out of the theater with a smile on my face, but this does not mean that there are not a lot of missed opportunities in the Wizard world.
In defence of the movie when we talk about magical rules and explanations for things ... original book fans (I read all the harry potter book twice a year even now after reading every book more than 20 times each) have a lot of knowledge going into the harry potter movies on why things work the way that they do. If you are just a movie fan, the original harry potter movies also lack a lot of explanation for the magic and the rules. I think we need to be more forgiving to these new movies for not explaining magical rules since they realistically can’t spend the whole movie explaining things. The original movies didn’t excel at this either we could just fill in the gaps with what we know from the books.
Plus the first 7 books are through the point of view of a child/teenager, in a school. The first time we actualy saw "grown up magic" was Dumbledore's duel with Voldemort in the Ministry, and all sorts of crazy shit happened in both the movie and book!
Great review! Always love your stuff. A note though on Jacob (a muggle) being in Hogwarts. We learn in Chamber of Secrets that when Myrtle was murdered her parents (muggles) came to Hogwarts to collect her body (Riddle tells hagrid this when he captures him) so it seems as if in special circumstances the anti-muggle protections can be lifted for limited numbers of people. Dumbledore wanted Jacob there so an exception was made.
@History of Magic yes but it's obvious he even then had plenty of clout so it's not unreasonable to suggest he might have convinced the current headmaster to tweak the rules for a bit
11:45 but the Chillin was there to choose someone that have a pure heart and can be a leader. If the Chillin choose Newt or Jacob, it would make no sense. To me the Chillin chose Albus was right but again he refused to take the position with that much power
If it were that the alternate dimension ability brings all magical beings in the area into it, then that would fix the plot holes because it would’ve protected the muggles while affecting the phoenix. And it would’ve been pointless to do it in the ministry or astronomy tower because Harry would still be in danger.
besides Dumblerdore wanted to the world to see that Voldemord had returned in the scene in the ministry and to the death eaters to witness his death so Snapes' loyalty wouldn't be doubted
We know Dumbledore will become Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards, so he has the approval now from the Qilin, that’s why he bow to him, but he couldn’t accept it in the exact moment because he still had the blood pact, and knew he wouldn’t be able to fight Grindelwald. (Moments after the blood pact gets broken)
Dumbledore vs Credence was a more spectacular duel than against Grindewald, heck they are the most powerful wizards in the planet and they just looked at each other intensely after dueling for 30 seconds
About the part where you focused on chanting the curses and spells, delving deeper i'd agree that they don't have to say it. The wandfight scenes are too fast, even killing the beast you need swift action there. Emphasis on the cruciatus curse being said is needed because Gellert needed to emphasize that muggles are supposed to be treated that way.
Learning how to cast nonverbal spells is a huge part in Harry Potter and the Haldblood Prince" a great part of Defence against the Dark Art-Classes are about that. I think even one of the spells in the book has the remark nonverbally. I think in the movies they mostly say the spells aloud so the audience knows what kind of spells they are using. Besides we see them casting nonverbal spells before especially Voldemort.
I find it difficult to understand that people like the new Grindelwald more. Johnny Depp's Grindelwald always seemed more humane and someone whom people will follow. The new one is a total Nazi Hannibal vibe like Tom Riddle.
The Quilin bowing to Dumbledore didn’t bother me as much as it did some, but YES IT SHOULD HAVE BOWED TO NEWT!!😭 My favorite story line is the Dumbledore/Grindelwald relationship. I thought both actors did an amazing job during key emotional scenes that left no doubt these two men had been in love with each other and there were still embers that burned. Despite everything, Dumbledore still calls the blood pact “beautiful” reflecting on the magic they shared. The last scene where Dumbledore can’t bring himself to go to the wedding, he is still feeling pain of a lost love. Jude Law is fantastic here. Dumbledore never loves again as far as we know, and perhaps TDH2 movie where Dumbledore gives his “Don’t pity the dead” speech he is even referring to himself here 😭 but just speculating.
Also, the writing in the fogged up mirror from Credence to Aberforth reminds of the mirror that Sirius gave to Harry in the fifth book maybe it's related, using a mirror as a form of communication
I was thinking of three possibilities as to why the Killing Curse didn't instantly kill the Qilin mother: 1. Vinda was using the spell non-verbally, and as such it's power was weakened (perhaps she wanted it to suffer). This is why most other wizards say the spell when killing something/someone. 2. Qilin are somewhat resistant to the Killing Curse, like dragons are with other spells 3. She's just not experienced enough and has to use the spell multiple times
Maybe this was already known to those who read the books but the fact the phoenix follows the person that’s gonna die is a huge thing for me. As dumbledoor had it in the original series
Muggles can totally be at Hogwarts castle. Remember there are students whose parents are muggles, aren’t this parents allowed at their kid’s school? Haven’t we seen muggles already in other places like Diagon Alley? Protection spells apply for undesired muggles, but can’t work the same way for those who belong to the wizarding world through their children…
11:20 I'm glad you mentioned the Qilin bowing to Dumbledore. I had a discussion about this with my partner when seeing the movie, and I agree it breaks the true character from the original story when the Qilin bows fort hose who are of true pureheart
You can see how Grindelwalds character changed. In the first movie he couldn't see a baby being hit by the killing curse but now he was ready to kill a dying and innocent teen in front of hundreds and thousands more watching from the screen as shown in the scene where MACUSA was watching. Pretty sure every other magical government was watching too
Hey Morgan I gotta quick question, we know a wizard’s lifespan is very long. But do muggle-born witches and wizards (like Hermione and Lilly) have that as well? Or only pure bloods?
I think Jacob’s wand serves many purposes. One many woods were believed in olden times to protect against magic or evil, which is why wooden beads are so often used in rosaries and other religious objects. One of the ways these woods protected was to break enchantments, such as the ones around Hogwarts. Snakewood itself is believed to have great healing properties and Jacob is greatly in need of spiritual as well as physical healing. Also muggles are being hunted at this time, so the wand even would help hide him from those who would want to hurt him. I also like so many others felt the Qilin should have bowed to both Jacob and Newt. Of course by this time Newt has been with it for a long time, so it might have off screen.
I have only two complaints with the movie. 1. There should have been a storytelling explanation for Claudia Kim’s absence. My personal fix for this would be for someone to say she is searching for someone else who would care for her, hence her finding Voldemort and becoming his snake. 2. Leta Lestrange’s death has no impact at all.
totally agree with leta.. both scamanders never mentioned her once.. and just one scene where karma got his memories removed by grindelwald.. thats it.. also thought there would be more impact with her from the second movie
@@MsAnemoi Exactly! I mean no disrespect to Zoe Kraztis as she is very pretty and talented. It’s not her fault, it’s WB’s fault! Her death had no emotional impact on Newt and his brother in SOD which makes her pointless in COG!
I've got 2 HUGE problems with this one: 1-It takes place in 1937, which means Tom Riddle was now 11 years old. Which means, if we go by Potter canon, then Dumbledore should already look like Michael Gambon did from the pensieve flashback to his visit with Tom. So Jude Law is now a bit too young to "look" the part. 2-And this has to do with the real world. A fair amount of it takes place in nicht magisch (non-magical) Berlin. Hitler seized power in 1933. The Nazis now officially ruled the whole of Germany. The Jews and other people the Nazis didn't like were being discriminated against. The first permanent (and well-known) concentration camps had been built at Dachau, Buchenwald, and Sachsenhausen. (The last one was only 22 miles outside of Berlin.) There should have been swastika flags on almost every public building. Not to mention tons of SS rallies, Hitler Youth rallies, and public book burnings had taken or were taking place, or Gestapo thugs looking out for anyone who might be accused of "undermining" the regime. And Hitler was already planning his annexation of Austria at the time as well. I think not adding even just a hint of how much the German people were being suppressed into a totalitarian regime did a huge disservice to the historical authenticity of the film, especially considering how much we see of Grindelwald, the Wizard Hitler; not to mention how amazingly detailed NYC and Paris were in the previous 2 films.
I'm glad that you and other people enjoyed it. It was tough for me and I love the original saga and Fantastic Beasts. I just felt like nobody ever explained what the hell they were electing an international magic president for.. and it doesn't line up with what I think I know about the Wizarding world.. and it sort of felt like an allegory for the US elections. Felt like there were too many characters and side plots happening and it feels unrelated to the original Fantastic Beasts movie. I wish they had never called them all "Fantastic Beasts" movies
@EM I thought that initially too, but the movies do build on top of the first Fantastic beasts film. The beasts all have interesting and pivotal moments in all the movies so far if you think about it, eg the quilins in this one along with some other scenes like the crabs or Newts bowtruckle/nifflers. Not to mention Newt is still pivotal in the entire series as someone who “never met a monster he couldn’t’ love”. This aspect of the series is a perfect metaphor to contrast the overall political climate which was already polarising due to muggles and non-magic folk being treated as beasts. The beasts here don’t just refer to the magical creatures but even No-majs like Jacob, or Obscurials like Credence and Ariana, and how beasts are simply creatures who’ve not been accepted or loved for who they are. This also explains why Newt is so important in the films, he’s one of the few people who is able to get through to even Credence, which even Dumbledore and Leta lestrange could not do for the “beasts” in their lives… It’s all very poetic in a JKR way if you think about it.
5:51 Do the screenplay say that those little scorpions are manticores? That's surprising. Manticores do have scorpion tales, but apart from that they're more like winged lions.
When I watched the secrets of dumbledor the first time I thought the chillin was going to bow to Jacob because he had been playing with him before!! Did anyone else thing that Jacob would get picked?
When alive Qilin was going to bow before someone, only question I had in mind was: Will it bow before Jacob or Newt? But it bowed before Dumbledore and Santos!! Like WTF! A person we know is flawed and another person we don't know anything about are more pure hearted than Newt and Jacob?!!
I believe the reason for the suitcases being duplicated in a shop is for countersight. As for blocking the killing curse, I believe it has to do with the blood pact. The magical realm was great for the movies. We know why Credence is there, to kill him. The dialogue built from the first two movies.
This movie amazing! I really enjoyed it (maybe because it was ONE OF my first movies in theaters), and got a good laugh out of it (so much humor oml). I highly recommend this if you're a fan of Harry Potter and/or Fantastic Beasts. It's a major improvement from the previous movie! Has cons but it's still good 👍 Another mention to the Easter eggs: That scene with all those suitcases, a bunch of pastries came out, which reminded me of that moment in the first movie where Newt and Jacob accidentally switched their suitcases. I found it quite funny.
The scene at the end of the movie with Tina and newt made me so happy, I was almost in tears (and I’ve never cried while watching the movie) Also I just took the chiline not dying instantly as it being a powerful being
9:46 You can't apparate across large continents and the train to Berlin went from London, not New York (it would've crossed the Atlantic Ocean for once!). That's why Newt had to use a boat to get to New York in the first film.
One thing that I remember critiquing about the movie after watching it for the first time was that I didn't remember if they ever actually said the name "International Confederation of Wizards" or even it's shorter version, the "ICW". As far as I remembered, they only ever referred to the election as them "electing the leader of the Wizarding World". I don't know if this was the case or if they really did mention the organisation by name, but neither me nor my girlfriend ever heard them say it. I am also not sure how I feel about Dumbledore turning down the position when the Kirin bowed to him, since we know that he holds the position in Harry's time. Having him turn down the position in this movie feels kind of pointless since we know that he eventually accepts it, so why not just have him accept it here when it was literally thrust upon him? It would've been a nice callback to Dumbledore telling Harry that "perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Those who have leadership thrust upon them and take up the mantle because they must". It is in character for Dumbledore to reject power when the Kirin bowed to him, but Dumbledore in this case didn't seek power or leadership so it would've been a nice callback, and it would've closed the not-quite-plothole-but-still-stupid-kind-of-hypocrisy that Dumbledore claimed that he rejected the position of Minister of Magic 4 times because he didn't want power, when he literally was the Supreme Mugwump of the ICW for who knows how long. Having him take up the position here because of the Kirin and because he was the only one who could lead them against Grindelwald would've made him having the position later on make a bit more sense given his stance on seeking and accepting power.
Why didnt he mentioned the room of requirement. As it is stated in the books Dumbledore didnt know it exists he just stumbled upon it, and clearly in this movie he knew what it was and use it properly
@@sarahmichelle473 yep also just because he said he just discovered it doesn't mean he was 100% honest especially with someone he knows to be a death eater
The negatives/cons of this movie completely outweighed the pros, I just couldn’t get myself to like it one bit (but I do agree they seemed to have only done right by Jacob and that was it).
hi man, nice video! To add something to your criticism section of the video, what do you think about Grindelwald using the vulnera sanentur spell to heal the Qilin? This was a counter spell Snape invented as the half-blood prince right? Snape wasn't even born by this time. What do you think?
Where dose it say that Snape invented that spell? In the book we do not learn the words he uses to heal Malfoy. It is not written down in his book either while every other spell he invented is. That Snape is the one using it dosn't mean he invented it. The wording suggests it would heal anykind of wound. It would be strange if no one invented that usefull spell before Snape came around.
By the way, when Mad Eye (Barty Crouch Jr.) said, "there's not blocking it" I think he meant you can't block the affects that follow AFTER you are hit. Also, about the nonverbal spells, I definitely agree they should be saying them. But when you said 'Mad-eye" I think you meant Barty Crouch Jr.. I think it's safe to assume the real Mad-Eye, is more powerful than Barty Jr....
Been waiting for this review since I saw the film! Completely agree with all your points, and I thought the German Ministry of Magic was so badass. Love the Avengers logo, saw your GF made it on Instagram! Looks amazing!
You deserve my subscription. I also appreciate how you defend the part 2 of FB. Other people are just too stupid to complain without analizing well about the second movie. It was'nt bad at all. The part of the movie that became clear and interesting to me is at the end of the scene where grindelwald had showed up and had explained his purpose to the crowd Ilove that. I also appreciate how the scenes roll to newt, introducing bunty, and then newt with jacob in a mission to meet tina, the scene where jacob and queenie faught, then Cama appeared, the character of Leta and Theseus all are just so perfect for me. So thanm you for defending the movie.
1. I think Jacob is secretly a wizard and he doesn’t know. 2. If the case was duplicated by magic, they might have a danger of duplicating everything inside it.
Yeh I wish the same thing when I watched it in theaters I really thought that would happen

Same too!
I did too, but something I liked about that scene is how the creature bows to Dumbledore, A man filled with guilt and regret from what he's done in the past and doesn't see himself as worthy, and he declines and begs it to pick someone else

"Well, Harry, being me has it's privileges"
EXACTLY! Dumbledore- the ORIGINAL plot-convenience ZouWu.
There's nothing that says another wizard can't block a killing curse that's being directed at someone else. Harry manages to block Voldemort's last killing curse, his expelliarmus collided with the killing curse which rebounded.

Yeah, I immediately thought that too.
Yea that would make sense and would fit what we know
Also, and no one seems to get this point, using the Gemino spell would replicate the full suitcase and all that was inside right? It replicates the object exactly as it is so the whole thing would be replicated, animals inside included. They wanted normal muggle suitcases with the outside matching perfectly with Newt's, hence why she went to a muggle shop.
I think they ask a mugle to replicate the suitcases because they're all under menace. If the one who duplicate them by Magic dies, they would desapear like the fish that Lili gave to Slughorn
I agree it sounds good, but I wish they had jsut added in one line explaining that
I don't know if I alone in this, but I really enjoyed the scenes in Berlin. They were kinda scary if you consider what happened there in the real world, in that time period. It was a reflection. The cheering peoples, the flags, the symbols and the way Grindelwald moved through the street in that black car. All I though about during that scene was Hitler and WW ll. I think they played out brilliantly
Yes i thought the scene of Grindiwold embracing the crowd was very well written. It builds so much of his character.

The snitch not leaving the pitch is likely just a rule for when the game is being played. We know at least one instance in the books where it was outside the pitch. James Potter was showing off with it during "Snapes worst memory".
well the snitch can be modify, i dont remember if it was a japanese student or chinese but there was a seeker girl that play with a faster than normal snitch
Agree! And then there is the Snitch given to Harry by Dumbledore in the last book.
Yeah, the snitch we saw in the movie could be a seeker practicing outside the pitch on a non-game day
Or all the snitches harry had around him outside of the pitch numerous times during the books. I can recall at least 3 times.
That and when Harry gets the snitch it stays with him.
That was the first thing i noticed lol
I was like: wtf did that thing just survive the killing curse
plus the qillin just gave birth thus making her more vulnerable, imagine if shes not weakened maybe she couldve survived
Muggles CAN get to Hogwarts and see the castle, with help. In HP, Moaning Myrtles muggle parents were able to come into Hogwarts

I agree with you. When I heard he said that muggles can't see or get into Hogwarts, I was confused why Lily's parents would like to send Lily to a school which is basically a ruined and dangerous site. I think muggles can see Hogwarts is basically a necessary element

Go on the internet there are still two movies to be made 🧇🧇🧇🧇🧇
It was disappointing asf
What was good about this movie:
- Adding significant lore to HP canon
- World building in general
- Actors
- Visuals (as always)
What I didn't like compared to the other movies:
- The entire movie puts it's focus on one single event, taking away the shock effect, also making the internal story of the movie less interesting
- Dumbledore's Secrets? What Secrets exactly? I didn't feel like there was anything significant revealed about Dumbledore, except for maybe him breaking the Unbreakable Vow, but nothing about his personality back then. I hoped it would be centered around Dumbledore more, I thought this movie would be about his internal ideological struggle (kind of what was revealed in Book 7), however right in the first scene it becomes clear he made that decision off screen already... So Dumbledore is yet just this almost perfect person, even though there is so much potential in making his character more interesting
That's why I rate this movie lower than the other Fantastic Beasts movies
I assumed with Muggles and Hogwarts was you see the ruins and signs and then like a normal person just don't go in. If you actually went in, you would be in the castle, in the halls and meeting people. I just assumed Rowling thought people were over honest, like how the Adam West Batcave was a cave in full view of the road, just with a caution sign in front. Or the Tardis saying "For police use only" keeping people out.
I think muggles can see Hogwarts if they are escorted or invited by wizards.
Wasn't there a shield against anyone not supposed to be in Hogwarts?
@@LukeSky2207 Its not a physical barrier where you just bump into it like a Mime's invisible wall, but a bunch of spells to confuse both your sign and mind. Like if you managed to get way too close, the charms will start turning you to otehr directions or make you think of something to turn you away.
13:11 "the past whispers to you"
actually during the scene of Jacob and Queenie on the alley there, you could hear the doorbell of his bakery
I really really loved the few minutes of Tina being in the movie. She is just so awesome and Aberfort saying 'always' is very nostalgic
I think there was supposed to be 7 decoy suitcases, the other two for Tina and Nagini in the original screenplay. We all know Rowling is fond of number seven
7 is the important number in alchemy. Many witchcrafts are attracted to it
@@sn13314 Also in fairtales/ folktales as well as in the Bible/Christian religion (Also number 4, 3 and 12)
I LOVE the movie!
Good video, though you missed another plot hole:
This time around when Albus describes his duel with Grindelwald and Aberforth and Ariana's death he says Grindelwald "just laughed" making it seem like he didn't fight and use spells at all and in fact only Aberforth and Albus are responsible for her death, which of course is not the way the duel was described the first time around.
Well the only description of the duel we get was from RITA SKEETER, so.... not really reliable.
@@MrKlausbaudelaire I think it's confirmed by Albus in "King's Cross", will have to double check though.
@@ginger1830 Same, I can't really recall who really detailed the duel.
Yep. He plays a villain so well.
I was surprised by his performance. I'm a huge Jonny Depp fan but I think Jude Law and Mads Mickelsen habve more Chemestry
I like Johnnys look as Grindelwald more
Johnny Depp was the better Grindelvald Mads isn't as intimadating in the role as Johnny Depp was and WB were dumb to replace him and I still remember Johnny Depp was in the role like the best parts of the last film for me were with Johnny Depp and because they recast him this film is just not very good with out his performance and also this film may have opened 1st but it's really underperforming at the boxoffice
Idk if it makes sense for you guys :D
I definitely love the movie and need to watch it again and pay attention to more details proving my theory.
Yep
When Tina FINALLY showed up I shrieked in the theater! My mom threw her hand over my mouth, but then everyone in the theater started clapping 😅
I shrieked too and my husband was shushing me lol I was the only one in my theatre room that excited though :(
Great review!
I think an explanation for Albus and Aberforth blocking grindelwalds killing curse is the blood pact
That's possible after all that's what broke it
We know Dumbledore will become Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards, so he has the approval now from the Qilin, that’s why he bow to him, but he couldn’t accept it in the exact moment because he still had the blood pact, and knew he wouldn’t be able to fight Grindelwald. (Moments after the blood pact gets broken)
Fun fact: In the first Fantastic Beasts film, Tina exclaims "Mercy Lewis!" who was an accused witch in the salem witch trials.
Dumbledore vs Credence was a more spectacular duel than against Grindewald, heck they are the most powerful wizards in the planet and they just looked at each other intensely after dueling for 30 seconds
I think people forget that later Dumbledore does become the supreme mugwomp and I think that’s why he got the approval from the quilin.
I love Johnny
When Dumbledore first said he loved Grindelwald, I shouted "YES!" in the middle of the cinema with my hands up, and I had and still have no regrets.
Same but silent
I hate that they make Dumbledore gay. I was a fan but no more.
@@FlatDraft you are a bit late on that
@@FlatDraft almost 15 years late to be exact
Even I felt very content when he said it explicitly. The author deserves a round of applause for making the most powerful character in the series gay.
The Quilin bowing to Dumbledore didn’t bother me as much as it did some, but YES IT SHOULD HAVE BOWED TO NEWT!!😭
My favorite story line is the Dumbledore/Grindelwald relationship.
I was thinking of three possibilities as to why the Killing Curse didn't instantly kill the Qilin mother:
1. Vinda was using the spell non-verbally, and as such it's power was weakened (perhaps she wanted it to suffer). This is why most other wizards say the spell when killing something/someone.
2. Qilin are somewhat resistant to the Killing Curse, like dragons are with other spells
3. She's just not experienced enough and has to use the spell multiple times
She killed a baby instantly in the previous movie
Again, that was a human baby, not a magical creature, so it doesn't have any resistance to the spell
I don't think we even know if she said the spell verbally or not when she killed the baby, not sure if it says in the screenplay
Maybe this was already known to those who read the books but the fact the phoenix follows the person that’s gonna die is a huge thing for me. As dumbledoor had it in the original series
Loooved this movie!...and you always make the best reviews of them!...I'm going to see it again in a couple days

Any wizards or witches that have magic has long lifespan. Regardless if they’re muggle-born or pure blood.
I would say muggle born's also get that as a big point in the books is that pure blood has no advantage on muggle born
When has the lifespan of the average pureblood ever been stated?
@@anonymousgaslighter345 it wasn’t in this video, it’s just something I’ve been wondering
@@luckner14 but you said that we know that the life of a wizard is long. Why say that?
Credence after he finally figures out who he is: Change team
WHAT ABOUT NAGINI!?!? I was expecting her to be in this movie! She could have helped out in many ways I believe
Queenie is one of my favorite Wizarding World characters.
I loved her relationship with Jacob and her wedding dress was amazing.
If they would have just duplicated it with their wands Grindewald would’ve noticed
Speculation.
Yes true magic is easier to detect
Besides do we know how long a duplicating spell lasts? What if that only works for a while like transfigurations?
5:51 Do the screenplay say that those little scorpions are manticores? That's surprising. Manticores do have scorpion tales, but apart from that they're more like winged lions.
When I watched the secrets of dumbledor the first time I thought the chillin was going to bow to Jacob because he had been playing with him before!! Did anyone else thing that Jacob would get picked?
I NEED A MOVIE OF THE SUMMER WHERE DUMBLEDORE AND GRINDERWALD MEET 😭
Has cons but it's still good 👍
Another mention to the Easter eggs:
That scene with all those suitcases, a bunch of pastries came out, which reminded me of that moment in the first movie where Newt and Jacob accidentally switched their suitcases. I found it quite funny.
The scene at the end of the movie with Tina and newt made me so happy, I was almost in tears (and I’ve never cried while watching the movie)
Also I just took the chiline not dying instantly as it being a powerful being
Tina should of been more utizlized
9:46 You can't apparate across large continents and the train to Berlin went from London, not New York (it would've crossed the Atlantic Ocean for once!). That's why Newt had to use a boat to get to New York in the first film.
Train from London to Berlin isn't possible too. You have to go with a ship to Rotterdam and go further with train.
Glad to see real Potterhead liking FB series. I like it as well but cannot explain it better than you did 😁
One thing that I remember critiquing about the movie after watching it for the first time was that I didn't remember if they ever actually said the name "International Confederation of Wizards" or even it's shorter version, the "ICW".
I did catch them saying International Confederation of Wizards, but only like once
I was rewatching the 1st movie and it's mentioned there. Haven't had the time to rewatch the second one yet though
The Wands was probably part of the three brothers wands.
Why didnt he mentioned the room of requirement. As it is stated in the books Dumbledore didnt know it exists he just stumbled upon it, and clearly in this movie he knew what it was and use it properly
Because he never stated WHEN he found it and he could have also just found another random room full of toilets
I definitely agree when you say the quillan(however you spell it) should've went to Newt.
I really thought it would be neat or Jacob
