  • In light of the controversy surrounding the Hip Hop competition at Summer Dance Forever 2024, I thought I'd re-post this snippet from the first episode of Endangered Perspectives: The Lost Art of Battling. Link to the full episode below.
Endangered Perspectives is a hybrid podcast documentary series that looks at shifts in culture, society, history, and art through discussions about freestyle street dance forms. This excerpt is from the first episode which focuses on battling as a lost art and culture, from the point of view of Bay Area turfing, and in the era of tiktok, globalization, and the rise of "all styles" and "hip hop" dance competitions.
Garion Morgan aka "No Noise" aka "Icecold3000" (TURFFEINZ), born and raised in East Oakland in a large family of turf dance legends, is a highly decorated veteran of dance battles since the mid-2000s with a long list of credits in commercials, music videos, films and TV shows.
Jamauny Belton aka "Scorpion" or "Scorp" (ANIMANIAKZ), born in Oakland and raised in Fairfield, was nicknamed the Human Insect by George Lopez for his innovative contortionist style. As the founder and director of Worldwide Dance Association (WDA) and the Universal Dance League (UDL), Scorp is a highly respected and trusted dance battle event organizer in the turfing community.
Jarell Boyd aka "Skeeter" (UNKNOWN), born and raised in the Fillmore of San Francisco, is the rising star in the dance battle scene today. Having battled in competitions internationally, including Fusion Concept in Paris last year, he represents the youngest generation of turfers out of the three.
