    Today, satellite mapping has forever changed the accuracy with which we can map, and AI computer vision systems have made satellite mapping more useful than ever before.
    Using AI, satellite mapping revolutionizer, Planet, can automatically identify and categorize what their satellites see, creating something like a true global database of “what’s on the world.”
    “Using computer vision, we can abstract out objects. Then we basically build up a database of all of the objects on Earth over time,” Will Marshall, Planet co-founder and CEO, says.
    Marshall notes protecting the ecosystem as a key example of what Planet’s technology can do; they can stop illegal logging in advance, because they can see the roads being cut into the forests before the harvest begins. Planet performed the first coral reef satellite mapping project, and can now - because we can watch it change day to day - lookout for coral bleaching or illegal fishing.

    My fear, as with many things is that this technology can become too depended upon for truthful or unadulterated information.
    The shift between google as a indexing company and google as a pervasive system that tries to influence culture, opinion and perceived truth.
    I would hope that there is some way to insure all information is treated equally, perhaps if every satellite was in some way public, and all processes used to categorize and understand the information were open source.

      @lyndonthan4350 2 роки тому +13

      I agree with your concerns. This video is effective at presenting this new capability as a very positive thing, but of course the loss of privacy and anonymity are not mentioned. 'Big Brother' is what kept coming to mind as I watched. No doubt, accountability and verification of things will have great impacts on how things play out in the world. Putin's war is a great example of this, but he still manages to hide some things from his people, despite many actors posting daily about Russian troop movements, etc. Same with the Uyghur camps. The idea of information overload, has recently seemed to be turning into a kind of information-ocracy, in which those willing and able to dig more are finding themselves separated form those less able or willing to find the information. This is despite the unprecedented 'freedom' of information availability. The real question is right as you put it. Who will supress and hide and obfuscate what information for their own ends? And from this, what new methods will hackers start using now, to engineer the information that is being shared.

      The “forced labor camp” and “silo” are perfect examples. This company can dictate what label to put on of a image. It’s actually a joke in China - the labor camp is actually a factory with employee dormitories, and the “silos” are actually forestation sprayers inside a desert.

      It's sad, but I also can't help but feel cynical about this. This type of technology is useful for what they mention, but I can't see how they could monetize it. On the other hand, authoritarian governments would pay incredible amounts of money to be able to use this technology to control their populations. The fact that this video doesn't ever even address that or the other possible negative uses makes me even more worried.

This data isn't live. The difference with this company is that they are doing daily snapshots of the Earth, and they are doing it with less expensive satellites that are upgraded more frequently. I don't know why you say this. Have you ever sat down and think of how much time does the average person has in a month? how much time does it takes to "look up" the problems in the political system?
      1. A political system is very complex and in general is made by 10.000 people (at least) that make or update at leas 60 laws per month. That means reading at leas 10 hours per day just to keep up, that's why most lawyers have specific fields and even they sometimes don't keep up.
      2. People at most have 200 hours of free time per month (if they have no kids), to look up something it takes at least 2 to 4 hours and to understand that something in detail it takes 10 hours (as much time as reading an avarage size book).
      3. There is another problem with media that makes 5 to 10 "hot takes" per day, on events that are related to laws from the past, present or future, that need to be factchecked.
      Conclusion, the problem is time, the masses can't be generalists they need to specialize on an event, educate on it and demand change.

    • @photorealm
      @photorealm 2 роки тому +1

      @@victorvanvolt8425 You are absolutely right. Research is dauntingly tedious. Getting access to the data is just one problem solved. Exploring the data for useful hidden information is a the challenge. As a software developer I have been deeply involved in AI with a lot of focus on image detection and recognition . And I believe this can reduce that time by several orders of magnitude.
      It is insanely challenging , but these systems are insanely good at what they do and they do it really fast.
      Almost all consumable information is already digitized so it can be done. The time and man power that that takes to get actual facts out of mountains of information must be reduced and performance improved. This idea didn't just pop into my head its been a journey:)

      @@vdwhite687 I don't deny the internet has major benefits, but the way it has been set up is a disaster, in hindsight. It could have been done better but it has been poisoned by money and politics. It is a warning. Also the problem with ideas on the internet is that they spread based on appeal, not based on their validity.

    That spy aspect of the technology is what gives me the irk. We are not ready to be that open to each other, especially globally. I fear that might trigger some sort of tech war and eventually lead to nuclear wars.
    I think this should be contained by permits, if a country provides a permit for surveillance in some parts then yes, but not all. And they too could have access to the platform…

These aren't the only satellites at risk of course, but I'd like to know more about what is done to contend with these issues?
