    Lars is a really nice man. People like to shit on him because he's gained some fame but he knows his shit. He's a loyal, good hearted dude who plays music for a living. I cant understand why people love to hate people who have had some sucess. Its not like he's some millionair playboy that treats people like shit. He talks to all his fans and is nice to people. Thats cool to me.

      I have a few times. Nice little story...he was signing some autographs at Warped and I asked him how Matt Freeman was doing. He was currently having health issues. Lars stopped what he was doing, looked over and seemed honestly touched someone would ask about his bandmate. A few years earlier I was backstage and my friend couldn't make the show so Lars took my phone and called my friend.

    You can't stay the same type of punk you were at 20 well into your 30's, especially if you have a family. Responsibility and obligation to your children supersedes whatever political and social predilections you have. It also seems to me that the punk genre, the punk scene in general is far less defined than it was for me as a teenager in the 90's. It bleeds across multiple genres and I just don't see the "pure punk" thing happening anymore. Street punk is pretty much gone. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I'm happy about it, but that's the evolution of the "rebellious spirit", which has a past, present and future.
    The punk rebellion, the punk spirit, it was the same seed that was in the kids of the 60's, the flower children, it took on a new form in the 70's as the idealistic altruism of the flower children burned in the fire of a subculture that sold out. The next generation of "rebels" were angry and it came in the form of punk rock/metal... it turned to ambivalence and general disenfranchisement with the genesis of grunge/goth in the late 80's-early 90's. Grunge's ambivalence and hopelessness turned to sadness and depression with emo in the late 90's/00's and so on.
    (I kind of sopped giving a shit about the popular subcultures around this time so I have no idea what followed.)
    Basically what I'm saying is that the seed of rebellion transmogrifies and changes with the generational attitudes towards the prevailing social atmosphere. Similar to the "7 stages of grief" in a sense, and I mean that figuratively, not literally. Punk will always be here in some form, but it won't be the same as it was when you got into it as a kid.
    Anyway, this is just how I have interpreted the "life" of punk.

    • @taffysaur
      @taffysaur 10 років тому +4

      Emo was a punk style from the early '80s (it's short for emotional punk). I still don't quite know how a radically different style of music/fashion inherited that name in the mid-2000s...

    • @chuckb11
      @chuckb11 10 років тому

      Mychael Darklighter It's short for emotional hardcore (but they're both derivative of punk anyway). Emo didn't really come into its own until the 90's. Rites of Spring may have formed in '84 but that was well before the label of emo was even a thing. Guy Picciotto has said that he considered every band he was in as being "punk rock" and they generally played shows with proto-hardcore bands like Minor-Threat.
      Honestly? It was just a misnomer. People who didn't understand the definitions of obscure genres just saw the term "emotional" and then applied to the argyle sweater wearing dudes who play acoustic guitars and sing songs about their lost loves or whatever. Can't say I blame them. They tended to be pretty dramatic.

    • @taffysaur
      @taffysaur 10 років тому

      chuckb11 that's pretty much how I'd had it figured. Definition drift.

    • @xSergioRottenx
      @xSergioRottenx 9 років тому +1

      chuckb11 "Proto-hardcore" woooah never heard of that...........so if Minor Threat is "proto-hardcore" which bands are the "hardcore properly" ones?

    • @chuckb11
      @chuckb11 9 років тому +1

      xSergioRottenx Bands like Earth Crisis, DRI, Youth Brigade, Murphy's Law, Agnostic Front, Warzone etc
      I use "proto-hardcore" to describe bands that could accurately be called hardcore, (Minor-Threat, Black Flag, DOA, etc) but thought of themselves as punk rock since there was no hardcore scene at their inception.
      You often see the term "proto-punk" used to describe more aggressive rock n' roll bands of the late 1960's, like the New York Dolls, the MC5, The Who, The Stooges. Basically anything that punk rockers were listening to before punk was a thing.
      So that's where I got "proto-hardcore" from.
