Back when I was on GameFAQs years ago, there was one guy whose most-wanted Smash character was Sukapon. I popped off a little when I saw Sukapon was in Ultimate, all because of that guy. Even if Sukapon isn't playable, I'd like to think they were excited too.
Just curious, are you talking about me? Because I also frequented the Smash 4 boards and was very vocal about wanting Sukapon to be playable. Even if he ended up being an assist, the fact he was represented at all made me so happy
It’s a shame Sukapon was never made playable in Smash. His moveset would be easy to adapt to the Smash Bros controls with how similar the command inputs are. It would be a great way to show the game some love.

Hearing Joy Mech Fight applying the Mega Man boss concept to fighting games makes me wish we got a Mega Man fighting game crossing over the various series within the franchise, like Classic, X, Legends, Battle Network, and Star Force
The closest we got to this is Megaman XDive which does have a versus mode with basically every MegaMan represented, but it is also a gacha mobile game. Older examples are Power Battle 2 (only 4 Classic playable characters) and Onimusha Blade Warriors (MMBN and MMZ have one guest each). I do want to play the others, but I'm rooting for XDive to drop the F2P factor someday.
That also means there is minimum 4 "slots" for invalid or unused bots that could do something fun if forced into the game. I wonder if anyone is going to explore those..?
@@KiraSlith not really, no. We're talking either 4, or 8 bits per fighter. That means either 16 fighters (4 bits gives a total of 16 values, ranging from 0 to 15), or a whopping 256 fighters (8 bits gives values from 0 to 255)
@@elecstorm3701 That's assuming there's no limit on the table search at all, which is unlikely. What's much more likely is a table search with a limit in multiples of 8, to fit the "full word" counts of an 8 bit processor reading an intial table of pointers to fighters.

Sukapon is amazing in PMEX Remix, he’s so well designed and full of soul, honestly makes me wish he got into Ultimate, people could legitimately say “Sukapon Deez Nuts” after winning a game with him.

Joy Mech Fight is the game that should have never existed on the NES but I'm so happy it exists. I never even realized the game even existed and didn't give too much thought on Sukapon as an assist. But when I was watching the design tier list video and you mentioned Sukapon from Joy Mech Fight multiple times I thought it was just a running joke but it later became this quick history of Joy Mech Fight that I was really interested in. Heck, I'm thinking of even playing the game soon. The game was ahead of its time and I respect the many choices the devs did to make this game a reality on the NES. Great job with this video. Also, forget about Urban Champion and the multiple re-releases Nintendo tried to market for no reason, we need an English re-release of Joy Mech Fight game with full-screen support or even a 2D art style remake of the game. And to top it off, although getting a Smash rep is impossible, I would want Joy Mech Fight to have a stage, music remixes, more assist trophies, and spirits.
At the very least, there IS a remix album of Joy Mech Fight titled The Joy. A few of the songs were used as bgm for this video, and I think several of the pieces are pretty great - the ska remix of Tweet Stadium and the crash rock mix of Garborg's theme especially. It's not too hard to find downloads of online, but there was a second remix album that I can't find anywhere other than basic evidence that "it existed". A shame, there's some really solid melodies in JMF, I'd really love to hear a good mix of Forest Preserve especially. I know it's not much and I definitely want SOME expansion on Joy Mech in the future (maybe mix it with Custom Robo's ideas so at least one can keep living?), but it's something!

@@MyMilho You can remap controls for the controller itself within the switch menu, doesn't even matter if the game supports remapping or not. And most games support remapping in game as well
I like Skapon's cartwheel move, it's so stupid and cute. I feel like an reboot with the same working frame (infinite scenario, simple moveset, small hurtboxes, etc) and renewed 3D graphics would hit it big in the industry
Replace characters with a hodgepodge of other characters moves (aside from one, having 1 composite character is fine) and maybe add a super meter and I'm sold.
Joy Mech Fight and Sukapon always fascinate. Joy Mech Fight holds a very special place in my heart for being my favorite game in High School. I think the only reason I played it, was that I saw it mentioned in Brawl and wanted to know what it actually was. Come to think of it, I think it's the game that got me into video game animation. Some of my oldest stuff online is fan animations of Sukapon for Smash Bros. I made on Flipnote.

This vid really makes me develop a new appreciation for Joy Mech Fight. As a smash fan, I agree Nintendo knows what they're doing when it comes to accessibility. I was intrigued hearing you talk about the layers and depth of JMF's combat and fighting game fundamentals. It's such a shame that this game didn't get the recognition it deserves. I'm glad Sukapon is an assist trophy in smash. Hopefully one day he'll be playable in the next smash game since it's possible for assist trophies to become playable fighters.
This is honestly a top 5 NES game for me, it got me into traditional fighting games. Me and my brother played this for hours trying to figure out everything because online information is so hard to find and it was always really fun.
Man, I remember throwing this on my NES Mini off of a recommendation from 4chan of all places, and for a solid week I was HOOKED (until Ho-oh kicked my teeth in), and even now its among the game I try to get friends to play with me when I bring my NES Mini places (alongside the Megaman monopoly clone and Famicom Wars). Its a shame Nintendo lost the rights for a while, cause I can imagine Joy Mech Fight could have gotten a revival experiment during the 3DS/WiiU era when Nintendo was testing different, older franchises getting new games. Makes me hope that one day it gets a similar treatment to the recent Chrono Cross remake where it gets a new coat of paint and an international release with only small touch ups for system changes. Anywho, time to go play Hard Mode so I can unlock the full roster for whenever I can bully people into playing it.
What an adorable game! As well as well-thought-out and shockingly bereft of any flickering in this video. Granted, perhaps on the Famicom hardware it's got more issues with sprite number, but that it runs as well as it does is a huge shock.
When i look at old games being so good, it make me wish for a port or a remake, i think that with the right team, they could make a remake of this game that shines like how it deserves. Also i'd love it if they kept the pixel art style. It would look great in my opinion.
A world when this game was released sooner before the SNES or on the SNES. I never got to play this game, and I likely never will; but because this or that. It is a fighting game and I have no one to play against, and while it would be fun to unlock everything and get good. It wouldn't be the same. But yeah, this is a really good game, I tried it for a good ten minutes, and it is real fun and silly. It seems hard and confusing, the lack of sprites makes it a touch disjointing to watch; but once you get into it. It a good solid, fighting game, and there is nothing little about it.
Honestly if we were to get a sequel to ARMS, I could 100% see Sukapon being added as a guest character and I think he'd work extremely well. I mean the hands being disjointed make it easy to justify him using different arms, his dash roll could definitely function as his character gimmick, and there's already a sentient pair of beach cop robots in the roster so I feel our little comedy bot would fit in just fine.
DF, this was a fantastic video. I had no idea what JMF actually was nor had I seen a single screenshot of gameplay of it until now. This really blew me away, what a hidden gem
They vaguely talked about but for anyone who wanna read on the copyright prombels, Nintendo had it started with the ideal of Sukapon being an Assist Trophy in Smash Melee (more of the ideal of what became the Assist Trophy, I don't think they fully worked it out yet seeing it didn't make the cut) but just didn't have the rights. Anyway it wasn't till 2007 one of the programmers of Joy Mech Fight just so happen to find the document unstamp at home. He thought he gave the rights but guess something happen that it became a mystery, anyway afterwards he gave the rights. If u got Nintendo Online I believe the game can be played with the NES Switch Online thing. It's crazy to me this is a famicom game, people can really pull out some amazing games at the end of a game console's life cycle. It's a bummer that people miss out on it.
After a year of having a copy of this game but no famicom I finally got one and was able to play it and I love it thank you for introducing this amazing game to me

It... is, just only on the Japanese Famicom Online version. Since the Switch is region-free anyway, it's as easy as just making a JP account to use the eShop once and downloading it.

Kinda sad you didn't talked about the songs in the game, because holy sht they're amazing, I have the Stadium Arena theme on my phone because of how good that song is, and also the fact that once one of the fighters is down to 1 bar, the songs get faster
This game was just *begging* to have a custom-robot mode as a reward for completing the game. The Rayman-style body parts and wide number of different types was perfect. P.S. Dachon best boy.
It's a real shame that Nintendo has yet to give a translated modern port of this Joy Mech Fight when they are constantly throwing Ubran Champion at us. Fantastic video by the way, not only in your detailed explanations as to why this game deserves some love but also in how funny it was. The jokes just kept on coming and I was in hysterics a few times. By the way, I remember hearing that this game also had a sort of action command feature, one where you could inflict more damage with a projectile by pressing the attack button as it lands on your opponent. Is this true? I could be confusing it with another fighter.
Why the hell wasn't Sukapon a Mii brawler costume in ultimate? They already had the model from the assist trophy, they could have easily made one like did with bomberman.
Love this game. It’s incredible they were able to make a SF2 inspired fighting game for NES and have it be as good as it was. They really worked the limitations into strengths.

What an adorable game! As well as well-thought-out and shockingly bereft of any flickering in this video. Granted, perhaps on the Famicom hardware it's got more issues with sprite number, but that it runs as well as it does is a huge shock.
When i look at old games being so good, it make me wish for a port or a remake, i think that with the right team, they could make a remake of this game that shines like how it deserves.
Also i'd love it if they kept the pixel art style. It would look great in my opinion.

A world when this game was released sooner before the SNES or on the SNES. I never got to play this game, and I likely never will; but because this or that. It is a fighting game and I have no one to play against, and while it would be fun to unlock everything and get good. It wouldn't be the same.
But yeah, this is a really good game, I tried it for a good ten minutes, and it is real fun and silly. It seems hard and confusing, the lack of sprites makes it a touch disjointing to watch; but once you get into it. It a good solid, fighting game, and there is nothing little about it.

Honestly if we were to get a sequel to ARMS, I could 100% see Sukapon being added as a guest character and I think he'd work extremely well. I mean the hands being disjointed make it easy to justify him using different arms, his dash roll could definitely function as his character gimmick, and there's already a sentient pair of beach cop robots in the roster so I feel our little comedy bot would fit in just fine.

They vaguely talked about but for anyone who wanna read on the copyright prombels, Nintendo had it started with the ideal of Sukapon being an Assist Trophy in Smash Melee (more of the ideal of what became the Assist Trophy, I don't think they fully worked it out yet seeing it didn't make the cut) but just didn't have the rights. Anyway it wasn't till 2007 one of the programmers of Joy Mech Fight just so happen to find the document unstamp at home. He thought he gave the rights but guess something happen that it became a mystery, anyway afterwards he gave the rights.
If u got Nintendo Online I believe the game can be played with the NES Switch Online thing.
It's crazy to me this is a famicom game, people can really pull out some amazing games at the end of a game console's life cycle. It's a bummer that people miss out on it.
After a year of having a copy of this game but no famicom I finally got one and was able to play it and I love it thank you for introducing this amazing game to me

It... is, just only on the Japanese Famicom Online version.
Since the Switch is region-free anyway, it's as easy as just making a JP account to use the eShop once and downloading it.
@@poyosphere8553 Us being able to download an untranslated version is NOT the same thing as them actually making the game available to us. Having a translated release of an old gem we never got would actually give NSO a little more value.
@@poyosphere8553 The SNES service has Japanese only games available on English versions. There is NO excuse not to do the same for the NES service with this game.
I'll be honest, Sukapon annoyed me as an assist trophy in Ultimate, but now, after learning his history, he has earned my admiration. Fight on, Sukapon. Fight on.

Kinda sad you didn't talked about the songs in the game, because holy sht they're amazing, I have the Stadium Arena theme on my phone because of how good that song is, and also the fact that once one of the fighters is down to 1 bar, the songs get faster

This game was just *begging* to have a custom-robot mode as a reward for completing the game. The Rayman-style body parts and wide number of different types was perfect.

It's a real shame that Nintendo has yet to give a translated modern port of this Joy Mech Fight when they are constantly throwing Ubran Champion at us. Fantastic video by the way, not only in your detailed explanations as to why this game deserves some love but also in how funny it was. The jokes just kept on coming and I was in hysterics a few times.
By the way, I remember hearing that this game also had a sort of action command feature, one where you could inflict more damage with a projectile by pressing the attack button as it lands on your opponent. Is this true? I could be confusing it with another fighter.

Why the hell wasn't Sukapon a Mii brawler costume in ultimate? They already had the model from the assist trophy, they could have easily made one like did with bomberman.

Love this game. It’s incredible they were able to make a SF2 inspired fighting game for NES and have it be as good as it was. They really worked the limitations into strengths.

Combo's are a part of strategy since it affects risk/reward of particular moves
