  • This is a Macro Photography LED Ring Light that uses has a variable brightness dimmer. I've been enjoying it for a while now so I thought there might be some macro photographers out there who would like it too. It's based around a 12 volt led ring light that you see fitted around some modern car headlights like the ones on Audi's. It's inexpensive to make and the results are good! It's also good as a soft fill light for close up beauty shots and gives a nice reflection in the models eyes. It works for close up foodie shots too :)
It fits from a 60mm up to a 85mm diameter macro lens.
The battery life is under an hour but if you don't leave it on when you're not using it you can get a lot of use out of it... better still, use rechargeables.

Gee thanks :) I've only been doing UA-cam video for 6 months so far... I'm more of a maker than a vlogger so I don't put out the kind of quantity that attracts a lot of subscribers... but it's going ok, doubling every 1 to 2 months so it'll be interesting to see where it gets to in another 6 months :)

    Hey Scotty,
Great design BTW. The 3D parts you’ve designed are Spot on and the TPU led holder, very impressed! Have printed one myself now. Just waiting for the dimmer from China 😯
Keep up the great stuff 😉👍🏻

Is there any way to mod this so that it also works with video? I made one thinking I could tweak enough with the dimmer and my shutter speed but even though you can get close by turning the power all the way up you can still see flickering artifacts.

I know it's an older video, but there is one detail I did not see anywhere......what nut size is inserted in the bottom print? I'll need to order that, or is it part of one of the kits listed in your parts list (again, didn't see it)?

Why is the ring light regulator not inside the box as well. I don't know much about electronics so it's an honest question. :-)

It's not a regulator / dimmer you can see... it's the same thing that you see on lots of power cables... helps keep things running smooth and not overloaded. The dimmer is actually in the box.

Do you have a written instruction on how to solder the components? Because, unfortunately, the video is not very clear on what to do.

Sorry, I don't have anything else apart from this video.

okay no problem, but could you give me a hint on how the wires are soldered to the battery case? In the video it looks like you just put them through these little holes to the inside. How are these connected? Sorry for the annoying questions. Greetings :)

    how bright it is?

The light I bought is probably around 100 lumens though you rarely need it at full brightness for macro shots.

I really like the idea of the slip-fit TPU ring--but like others, I found the video unwatchable because of the horrible "music." I could feel it grating against every nerve in my body as I listened.

Jesus! WTF was that? That's the most annoying "music" I've ever heard. You have an interesting item here, but I can't watch the video.
