I have a rasp pi4 with every game imaginable, a cracked wii with similiar. There is no retro game I couldn’t play. But I bought a EXP - and I love it. I play the select few games on a cart more than I would ever before. Plus I enjoy collecting the carts I don’t yet have. Makes no sense but I love it!!!
Collecting the carts was a big thing for me too, hence why making games for the system not available on cart (unlockables on VS, hidden games EXP only, Capcom EXP only) really put me off.
Lol yeah makes no sense. I really don't need to buy any other device ever again. Yet I do. Makes no sense. Its an addiction!
Ive found similar. How can you can choose from any game ever? You spend more time choosing than playing. However, I do wonder how many Evercade carts are really ‘curated’? Why have paddle games on the Atari collection for example?
@@dreadtheweekend ah yes.. im sure they have their choices of certain games that are available for cheap license. Though the Intellivision 2 cart seems more to me that they had little choice on that selection.

I'm on the fence here, I own the original Evercade but I really don't like the screen very much as the viewing angles are quite poor, other than that it's quite a solid little machine.
With the upgraded screen I was really looking forward to the EXP and almost preordered one, I'm kind of glad I didn't do that now. I think I'm going to hang back for the time being and see if they can address some of these issues, it's a bit disappointing really.
Yeah give it a few months. It can only get better surely.

Just got e-mail from Blaze. The replacement LE Evercade EXP will have the cartridge slot modified. So it's possible that after that future EXP's might also be modified. Although sounds like we are talking around March 2023.
Yeah, could be March or later. But sounds good that some amendments are being made. Those still waiting for the LE could end up being the lucky ones.

I’m new to Evercade, having just got the EXP. I’m very pleased with the unit as well as the carts I’ve bought so far. I’m just a little disappointed that certain carts, like the Namco ones aren’t available in the U.S. other than through a Amazon 3rd party seller who wants $10 more than the regular price of $19.99.
Ah the whole Namco thing is a confusing mess. Not playable on VS and not for sale at all in the US. Keep searching.. you might get lucky. You could always purchase from Funstock or Amazon UK.
Though stock might be a problem as these carts are no longer made
@@CrazyBurgeralso Namco isn’t even the best this console has to offer. The real magic is found in the arcade carts and the indie/new retro game collections.
Yeah definitely. Currently making my way through Cathedral. Probably one the largest games on the system. Will take many hours to complete.
I canceled my order after your first in-depth review. I'm not happy about the sound quality, battery life, light bleed, no bluetooth, and the tight cartridge issue. Perhaps they'll get these sorted out with their next release. I don't mind waiting.
Be interesting to see how the LE editions fare that are being rebuilt now. Supposed to be making some changes.
@@CrazyBurger That is interesting, I didn't know they were making slight changes to the LE edition. Is that news coming from Blaze?
@@sshamon72 Yeah they just updated via email. Probably get it late Feb.. making some subtle changes. No idea what though.
The E Mail says they are making changes to make it different from the original LE but will not announce anything yet so as the stolen ones out there cannot be modifed by who ever has hold of them.
I found the excuse about the battery indicator needing to "learn in the wild" or whatever they said to be baffling. Although I guess its how Blaze tests its games too. Let the consumer discover issues and fix them later.
The heat issue greatly concerned me but I've been repeatedly told that its normal because the Steam Deck does it which is another bizarre thing to say. I've no doubt the Steam Deck gets hot but not while running the NES version of PAC MAN.
The TATE mode is nice to have but its far from comfortable constantly mashing the L2 button and inadvertently covering the air vent with your hands. They might want to look into a grip for it.
The external sound is definitely worse than the original handheld. It just sounds tinny and the fact that they again used the cheapest audio jack that only accepts older style classic headphones just screams cost saving.
The battery indicator and play time is poor.. plus the over heating is baffling. Its only playing retro games, it should never get this warm. You can't compare to a steam deck as that's trying to run AAA games like Cyberpunk!
@@CrazyBurger nevertheless that seems to be what most are saying. I've also seen it written that "hot electronics are just a thing now" or words to that effect. Makes absolutely no sense to me. The original Evercade was fine and never got hot and barring the Capcom games plays exactly the same thing. Of course it wasn't also permanently connected to the internet. Perhaps powering the new screen is also a cause?
@@obsoleteworlds Good point about the screen. That certainly could be the cause of overheating and the battery draining quicker than advertised
@@CrazyBurger I've never seen the indicator go up to four notches. Even after full charge and light going off it only ever shows 3 bars.
I did get it to 4 bars, I took a pic and added it to one of the FB groups.
I had no problems with the headphone jack. Sound was spot on using the phones. I've not had any crashing as yet too. Love my exp.
You would have no problem if you are using standard cheap headphones with the two nozzels on the jack. The issue, as with the original Evercade is that it is incompatible with the majority of modern headphones (three or more nozzels on the jack) which typically have volume control and/or mute buttons. What you get with these is dropped audio channels in certain games. For a premium product they really should have upgraded this.

Blaze should enable the USB C port to allow for a hub and extra controllers to plug in. could be vs ones or the 3rd party ones that work with the vs.
Wonder if that's possible..
@@CrazyBurger - It is, there's custom firmware available to do that on the OG handheld...
Another great video and all points are fair. Delays to releases are not an exclusive Blaze issue. However it is seemingly becoming common to get devices and games and have to await later fixes via update, again this is not unique to Blaze. That being said the EXP was delayed from November to December to "give us the best experience possible" so I have to wonder two updates in after release (one being that day one update) how bad was the software back in November!? I'm sure Blaze will fix it, I just hope that they focus on a solid firmware update to resolve the current crop of issues. The button mapping is still a huge frustration, as the L1 and R1 on the EXP are not as comfortable as the L2 and R2. If Blaze could hold off on another hardware update for next year and just focus on the Firmware and Carts I think they would get the whole community back fully on side.

You know it can't be a good thing when almost 12 mins of your video covers the negatives and the last 6 or 7 mins are on the positive 🤣 but your right in everything you have said and its still a very good handheld, just a lot of ironing out to be done with firmware updates that can hopefully resolve most issues
Lol I realised that while editing.. thinking shoot I've spent longer on negatives than positives. I think the positives do outweigh all the negatives. But it's still disappointing. I'm sure a few of these will be sorted with firmware.
I really think the retrogaming community should support blaze and the Evercade. I think it is great to see how a small company like blaze can stand it's own next to giants like nintendo and sony. I sold my old evercade to get this model and I am not disappointed at all. Sure there are a few cons but the Pros outweigh them! I think the gaming press sometimes is to hard on companies. I remember the time when we only got our gaming news from magazines and when buying a new system it was always difficult to decide. That's how I got my gameboy pocket. The screen was touted to being great but when i bought mine I was a bit disappointed but it did not make me return my unit. Long live blaze long live the Evercade!!
Ha well said. I definitely support them 100% but I obviously try to provide honest content so everyone can decide. Put it this way, I would've unlikely played so many amazing titles if it wasn't for Evercade. I've discovered tons of new and old crackers that I would've otherwise passed by.
People should support good systems and games, the size of the company is irrelevant and Blaze simply doesn't help themselves. Questionable decisions, poor quality control, ridiculous button mapping options, still after two years they haven't implemented this. For a system supposedly by gamers for gamers, I think they're play testers are blind. I pen the systems and I love the ethos, but I'm nothing but frustrated with their approach and execution. If you're happy with sub par good for you, but asking people to support that is silly.

Don't ignore the issues and problems. It can be very frustrating at times. They've probably done more good than not. Though we definitely need to get on top of silly issues. More full time PAID testers are needed.
I was thinking of cancelling my order. But have decided to keep my EXP! Sticking with BLAZE because of the promised higher output of Carts! Especially the Amiga collection seems worth it. I was never really effected by any issues concerning the first Handheld. Only now this one. Strange that, because this is suppose to be the upgrade?! Maybe it’s down to all our high expectations of what we thought it would or could of been?! One thing is for sure. I predict that there definitely will be a Third version of the Handheld. But hopefully that will not be for quite a few more years down the road. That will be the defining one though. Which will have everything ironed out, and perfectly designed. But as you say Crazy Burger. BLAZE should not rush it. Take the time to get it wright! The NEW one still needs to settle in a bit, and find it’s feet. I think it’s a solid enough improvement!🤔👍
I think it'll definitely improve but they rushed it a bit and definitely over hyped it. It's got potential at least.
I'm quite happy with my VS. Was strongly considering the EXP, but there seems to be too many QC issues. I think I'll hold off for now and see how this all shakes out.
Issues aside it’ll improve for sure. I’d be interested in you doing a round up of all your handhelds of 2022 and where/how they’ve fitted in. Evercade/EXP, Anbernic RG552, RG353V, Steam Deck, etc, so many UA-camrs throw up a 10 minute video these days before moving on to something different. Thanks for the in-depth videos about the EXP. Ah the old ten minute video nonsense. It seems to be the industry standard. But I don't think you can do any product justice in a 10 minute video. I might well do a round up at some point. I've probably bought too many, more than I intended to.
@@CrazyBurger lol, and I bet half of them have been resting in the cupboard ever since. That’s what happened to many of mine before selling some on, but I still half fancied an EXP a few weeks back and a GameBoy style vertical like the 353. I do still love my RG552 but my Deck has been calling all the shots.
@@modestyblaise4167 I definitely played the RG552 a lot.. but now it's all Steam Deck and EXP. Only a couple of them I've only touched once or twice.
I do feel they rushed this product in order to take advantage of the 2022 holiday season. I will say Blaze is a fine company and I'm happy they're doing well and I really want to support them. I really wanted to like the Evercade Exp, but hopefully their next handheld will be an improvement.
It does feel to me that it needs another few months of tweaks and firmware fixes.
@@CrazyBurger Yes indeed. I know Blaze reads through the comments of these UA-cam reviews. I see Ryan from Blaze commenting and providing feedback in several indepth reviews.

Another good video on the Exp, that sound isn't great, puts me off how low the volume is, and its a shame the lynx collection didn't have decent games like Paperboy, Road blasters on there.
I would definitely like to see Atari Lynx Volume 3 for Stun Runner, what a brilliant conversion that was! And Paperboy and Roadblasters too.
I dont get the sound, it's very odd. I'm hoping it's fixed via firmware. It's so underwhelming. I'm pretty sure we might see another Lync collection next year.
I've just cancelled my stolen EXP limited edition pre order...won't be available until March 2023 at the earliest plus overheating and a 3hr battery life no thanks..I'll dip my toe into the Anbernic pool with an rg35xx.
Did I not read on the Anbernic site that they have delivery issues with there products at the moment ?

I did love it, although the difficulty especially at certain bosses enraged me. You get save states on the exp version? The switch version if you die, you go back to your last save. At least on the default difficulty.
I'm on the last level of Alwa. You getting mixed up with Cathedral? That game is much harder than Alwa.

@@luisdiaz1980 you have save states on any version. All saves to the cart. It's only Cathedral that doesn't have save states as it's a native port.
if they put 100 games on 1 cart for about 50 quid each time instead of 4 or 5 i would be interested,just not willing to keep so many carts and having to swap all the time.

full bars to half a battery readout is 100% a faulty battery
and probably not exactly safe to use.
when a NEW battery loses voltages like that, it can be dangerous.
especially when the battery life is bad, is proof its the actual battery, and not the detector or charging circuit/chips.

Lol. Yes. I've also pressed ctrl alt delete to reset it. The sound is terrible on some games. Could be an emulation issue.
The EXP let's you experience Evercade games in Tatty (sic) mode. Too many cons not enough pros.
Definitely too many cons. But do the pros outweigh the cons? Hard to say.

@@CrazyBurger Improved specs for sure but quality control and build quality problems across the board according to new owners on Reddit which undermines any specs improvements imo.

It definitely does. It can be uncomfortable for lengthy sessions. Short bursts preferable.
