Here's the crazy part....... Typically, a storage unit (currently) will cost will run about $200 per unit that size. Two units $400 / month x 12 months = $4800 / year. Store them for 20 years, add a price increase every few years and you're looking at WELL OVER $100,000.00 just to store empty boxes!!! Insane!
My grandfather recently died last December and he had a locker that looks identical to that packed full of trains. It is nice to know their are other guys like him. Me and my dad are currently cleaning it out and he found his video halarius. 😂😂
Imagine being one of those dudes from Storage Wars seeing all those train boxes in a garage auction, and then spend thousands just to realise they are all empty boxes
They might try to sue him i watch a video and they bought a storge unit with a lot of empty box that were worth a lot but were emty cause of a law in that area that if it went for more than they were in debt for than any extra money it went to the old oweners
Yeah no need for pallets on the 2nd Floor! Funny story... my basement hobby room got flooded from a busted outside front faucet nothing really got damaged just lost some of the boxes which I replaced with many grocery shelflike cardboard trays. The best part is the company who did my insurance covered renovation moved everything into book boxes or the next size up into a pod on the driveway while they renovated the hobby room and the wall to the adjoining entertainment theatre. I've been working hard though reorganizing my hobby room and may even be able to get my 4x8 with 4x4 extension HO Layout 110 THE SUPER PRETZEL built exactly to the construction specs of the Atlas Snap-Track pamphlet sized Manual. I built it with the intention of using well over 10 years ago when I finally bought myself a home which I did just over 3 years ago! Both will be ready exactly when I turn 65 this June 14th and give me room for my model building and trains! Congrats on upgrading your storage locker!
Lol, and I thought I was jealous before but now I see just how train videos I have missed, I'll never catch up (train collection) at 65. My wife and I used to have an antique store and I would repair restore refinish what we found at auctions. We loved to buy projects and after a while the projects way out number what was for sale in the store, so into the storage unit's it went, eventually we were able to build a building at our home to stop the bleeding aka as rental fee's. Just found your channel and really enjoying it and the way you give a review. Lisa is a trooper and it's great that she's enjoying the hobby with you that's a big help ask me how I know. TY
Cool - I have the same issue with my boxes but nothing like this. Interesting process for the storage.LIonel & MTH rooms. 👀 • Cheers from the Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
Wow, Eric, that is impressive! Not only the quantity of boxes, but how well you organized them. While not the typical train video it was very interesting all the same. You and Lisa put in a good day's work for sure. Great job! Bill B.
Ground floor Perfumery, Stationary, Men's Suits, Shirts, Socks, Ties, Hats, Underwear, and Shoes, Going up. Is all I could think of when you said that in the elevator.
Video Notes: 1) This video has chapters for those who want to skip around. 2. The elevator quote is NOT from the British TV show "Are You Being Served" lol.
H...o...l...y crap!!!! Just......w...o...w. I'm speechless. And this whole collection was bought over the 15+ years (going by UA-cam videos that is) Eric has been doing these train reviews. Who knew there was that many?? That is a LOT of boxes!!!! And there is more, not counting the freight rolling stock?? Just wow.... Eric, thank you for showing us this video and the engine/passenger car boxes you have bought and stored. Really cool seeing all this!!
I mostly keep locomotive boxes and caboose boxes now that I moved. And boxes to "special" cars like high cubes or intermodal. I simply don't have room to keep boxes anymore. And I'm not renting a storage unit just for boxes lol. I know it affects the value because I have tried to sell mint cars before without the boxes and get only a fraction of the value. I actually try to buy cars without boxes because they sell cheaper! What a coincidence! That's the same code I have on my luggage!
Hey Eric great video. I think that was hysterical about the code to access the place. Hopefully the guy you called does not watch this video LOL! Lisa is the kind of girlfriend we all hope to have in our lives who understand our hobby/obsession with trains. You are one lucky guy!
I disagree with the notion that there are every Too Many Trains! in anyone's collection. How many locomotives do you need? More than I have! Rinse and Repeat! (I need to get a storage locker for my overflow.
If you have room on your property, buy a 32' trailer and store them there. Dont know what a 10 x 30 foot storage unit goes for a month but year after year the trailer pays for itself. And when your done with trains you can sell the trailer costing you not alot.
I've been watching your channel for years. Love it! If you wouldn't mind, just out of curiosity, how much money would you say your collection is worth now? I haven't seen anyone with a larger collection other than Mr. Muffins trains. And he is a dealer!!
I hope you got insurance on those. I Hope you never miss a payment on that storage Rental, looks like you got about close or over 100 grand worth of trains in that storage units.
Wow, that is definitely is a lot of boxes, you know you have a lot of trains if you have to rent a storage unit just to store the boxes 😂. Great video, different then the norm but still enjoyed it.
I suppose if they were really determined they could, but there's a wire mesh covering the top so they'd have to cut through that. It’s be a lot easier for them just to cut the lock on the door lol. I would imagine it's open like that so that the fire sprinklers can get into every space if needed.
Yo dawg, I heard you like boxes, so we got you two big boxes for your boxes😂 ... Also, do you have an inventory scheme? (I'm assuming at this point you probably have some sort of database) A video going over the basics of how you go about it may make for a useful bit of side content. Y'know, stuff like: --Program/s used and how they are configured --Collecting the data --The kinds of data that make up the inventory --photographs and how they are electronically organized --Updates and backup (and probably a few other things I haven't thought of because I'm writing this at 4:30am 😴)
I’m wanting to build a train display case and I’ve seen that for your display cases you just set the trains on wood without grooves for the flanges. Does setting an engine on the wood negatively affect the flanges?
Nope. The grooves just make it look nicer and give something for the locomotive to sit in, but they're not necessary. Been using this design for 15 years with no issues. That said, as some point I want to get a routing table so that I can add grooved to any new cases that I make...but again it's purely cosmetic. Not required.
I can sympathize with the storage unit. My wife and brother in law split the cost of a climate controlled storage unit to store my father in law's collection. It wasn't on your level but it was extensive.
Hey Eric what are your thoughts on MARTA. As a fellow Georgia resident I try to use the system when I can but I'm curious as to your take on it. I think it needs to expand across the state or be supplemented with more passenger rail
You own 460 trains WOW..that's crazy I think u missed some that looks like a lot lot more..how much you pay for the new storage building..I'm a antique collector I have like 4 or 5 storage buildings full of stuff..
Wow Eric you have a lot of boxes will you can't have not have to many boxes Eric. I mean yeah you do have a lot of boxes but hey more boxes more than the maer right Eric? And hey I bet that you are going to get some more boxes right Eric? You can make a cardboard train layout right Eric?
Eric has given us some of the best advice we will receive on a UA-cam video today - Keep the boxes and cases!

Something to consider early on is putting pallets down and boxes on top. Then if you ever relocate you just need a pallet jack.
Imagine being one of those dudes from Storage Wars seeing all those train boxes in a garage auction, and then spend thousands just to realise they are all empty boxes
Wow that would be very depressing for someone but hilarious for everyone else.
It’s be a hilarious episode

You and me both!
I was waiting for the luggage combination line, that was great 😅👍
Aerosmith song from the 1989 album Pump, Love in an Elevator, and nice quote regarding the luggage lock from the movie Spaceballs from 1987!! LOL
Kudos to Lisa! Great support! Very professional video, love the music selection. I’m keep’em my boxes 😊
Thanks so much! 😊
Not boring at all. Interesting to see how someone stores massive amounts of EMPTY boxes!
Holy cow that is wild Eric. Hopefully one day I’ll have something similar to that!😅
Seeing the old triplex box gave me a trip back I hope it comes back it's a great locomotive.
Nice! I recently stated reorganizing my collection onto shelving racks with wheels.
awesome spacebars reference, That old storage unit was Jamed full like the spacebars radar 😉

agree with keeping boxes. I collect early lionel so keep my original boxes from the 1910's
Love the reference to Space Balls

WOW!!! I thought I was bad with 2 5X10 units.

Wow Eric all them boxes you have alot of trains lol!!
I've got a few
Really Eric..... Spaceballs reference XD love it man
Space balls and are you being served! Brilliant
Right on space balls, wrong on the other.
Wow Eric, you have to have close to a million in a half dollars in all of your train stuff
Love the Spaceballs reference!
I have a similar storage unit but it is full of drones, RC helicopters and planes. I keep the trains at home as they are irreplaceable.
Wow, very cool.
Spaceballs and Aerosmith references, speaking my language.

@eric's trains, would love some details on how the new intro was created/animated.
Elevator reference is from “ are you being served”- British comedy show from yesteryear
Nope, but good guess.
I hope you got insurance on those. I Hope you never miss a payment on that storage Rental, looks like you got about close or over 100 grand worth of trains in that storage units.
Of course it's insured.
Wow, that is definitely is a lot of boxes, you know you have a lot of trains if you have to rent a storage unit just to store the boxes 😂. Great video, different then the norm but still enjoyed it.
Thanks for watching
Ooh new intro it looks good 👍
Great stuff and cute wife….
Hope you bought her a nice dinner!
She's not my wife...yet.
Time to fill both new storage units up!
Out of curiosity, why is the roof open in the storage unit. Couldn't someone just climb over.
I suppose if they were really determined they could, but there's a wire mesh covering the top so they'd have to cut through that. It’s be a lot easier for them just to cut the lock on the door lol. I would imagine it's open like that so that the fire sprinklers can get into every space if needed.
Probably facilitates climate control as well.
I had actually sent you an email about this recently. Good to know.
I enjoyed the video, you DO have some trains.
Yo dawg, I heard you like boxes, so we got you two big boxes for your boxes😂

Mine is very simple. It's an excel spreadsheet right now.
I’m wanting to build a train display case and I’ve seen that for your display cases you just set the trains on wood without grooves for the flanges. Does setting an engine on the wood negatively affect the flanges?

Here’s a good place to start. ua-cam.com/video/RXSe_yZ3Gc8/v-deo.html
Oh sweet! Love the new intro clip animation.
There's enough space in the units for more layouts :)
I have the same combination on my luggage!
Love in a elevator is one of my favorite Aerosmith songs great video as always. Good morning Mr Tyler going down???
Yep! 😊
Amazing video Eric by the way love the new animated intro! That’s amazing how you have all those trains!
Thank you!
My evil twin thinks about something happening and your units going up for auction. Someone would bid big and find out they’re all empty!!!
It would be a funny episode of storage wars for sure.
Hopefully you bought her a big steak dinner for helping you!!!!! Really cool!!
We had Mexican food for lunch, does that count? Lol
One day I want this to be me lol great stuff Eric
That’s amazing. It’s the same code as my luggage.
Same here
Do you have enuff room on your property for a shipping container? Does the HOA allow you to put PODS in the driveway long term?
No, and no. :)
I can sympathize with the storage unit. My wife and brother in law split the cost of a climate controlled storage unit to store my father in law's collection. It wasn't on your level but it was extensive.
Nice intro!
You can never have too many model train but nice collection eric
You might consider putting up a shed in your back yard!
I think my HOA might freak out lol
Mine too thats why i build all the storage space at my man cave! Add a room to your house?
The spaceballs reference 😂
Very cool bud never have to many trains
So what is the plan for all the empty space you now have? More trains?
Hahahahahahahaha. Space Ball one. They have gone plaid.
Hey Eric what are your thoughts on MARTA. As a fellow Georgia resident I try to use the system when I can but I'm curious as to your take on it. I think it needs to expand across the state or be supplemented with more passenger rail
Fantastic Eric! Love watching your content.
Space Balls, The Movie, HaHaaaaaaaa!!!
You own 460 trains WOW..that's crazy I think u missed some that looks like a lot lot more..how much you pay for the new storage building..I'm a antique collector I have like 4 or 5 storage buildings full of stuff..
These boxes are just locomotives and passenger cars. I’ve got several hundred freight car boxes at home
so were you referrig to the spaceballs reference, or the beginning of the aerosmith "love in an elevator" video?
Right on both counts! Congrats.
I think it would be funny if you ever had an auction there and people bid on it thinking there were trains in there.
Yes, it would be a funny episode of storage wars. Somebody pays $100,000 for a locker full of empty boxes.
Are You Being Served...nice reference
No, that's not it lol. Everybody thinks that.
I wouldn't know anybody that would think of such a thing.
