Gert Fröbe und Terry-Thomas, wahrlich die highlights in diesem fantastischen, kurzweiligen Epos 👍
Such incredible planes, stunts and photography! No CGI crap. Just the real thing.
Still one of the best movies ever made, star studded.
I love the film so much as well. This one and the great race: magnificent!!!
...see also...
..."Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies"...
There is nothing a German officer cannot do!
How to fly a plane? Just look into the manual: "Number one: sit down" (allegedly Fröbe improvised that line)
...well spoken by Auric Goldfinger...😉
I mentioned this movie to a German friend while we were visiting the Messerschmitt Museum in Munich many years ago. I was afraid he would get offended to be reminded of how the Germans portrayed themselves in this film. But no - he laughed out loud, saying he'd never seen anything so hilarious. Apparently, Germans were able to laugh at themselves seeing this movie. God bless them.
:-D
Gert Fröbe, best german actor
Along with THE GREAT RACE, one of my all time favourites.....never tire of watching both. Terry Thomas...so sadly missed....what a wonderful villian.
Check out It's a mad, mad, mad, mad World. Another classic comedy.
You’ve picked the best two from that era (plus The Battle of Britain, obviously).
Tony Curtis in The Great Race when he smiles at the camera and his teeth twinkle, the hero all in white. All is well with the world.
A lifetime onwards and my views of national stereotypes are entirely shaped by Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. I love the French!
Terry-Thomas wasn‘t just a good villain. In movies like La Grande Vadrouille he also played really good protagonists
One of my top 10 films of all time! And it has my favourite film quote ever - Lord Rawnsley (Robert Morley) speaking about the Air Race "The trouble with these international affairs is that they attract foreigners" :-)
My neighbour played the german staff car driver in the film. Also played one of the german ground crew.
Camera car, Citroen, the best for no shake work.
Loved the film when it came out. I have the DVD and watch it occasionally. Some scenes were matted shots but the actual flying planes were cool.
One of the best films ever made what a cast, what fun ! Thanks
It was a simply "Magnificent" film!
Great film. I miss the old days
This film is a hoot! 🏆🇬🇧
Nice photos of a great movie ! Must have been hard work but fun to make !
One of my top three favourite films !
einer der besten filme die jemals gedreht wurden
00:24 Using a citroen for steady motion shots, capital idea! That hydropneumatic suspension'll do it.
I could drive flat out on Fenland roads and my Citroen floated above the bumpy surface ! The best suspension in the World.
They were used by the bbc for horse racing coverage right up to the '90s too.
Interesting shots. One of my favourite caper films of the 60s.
Amen to that ! It's a very funny film that was well written, well acted & wonderully produced !! :-)
@@jubalcalif9100 I remember a german flight simulation forum, where there was one old Crew Chief for the Mig-29 who always said that there were only two realistic aviation films, Hot Shots and Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines! ;) :P
@@LupusAries Thanks for your comment ! Fascinating bit o' trivia ! I always thought the 1966 movie about German WWI aces, "The Blue Max", had amazing & awesome arial photography. I saw that as a kid when it was first released. Starred George Peppard, Ursual Andress & James Mason. Thanx again !! :-)
Thanks for inside scenes of one of my all time favorite movies!
Nice to see a photo of Tony Hancock!
i say , what an absolute shower! Terry Thomas was a god !
Hard cheese old man...
@@PhilbyFavourites He was also brilliant in "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World as J. Algernon Hawthorn 🤣
Epsolute shaah..
Holy Underwear, Batman ! What a sheer and utter delight to watch this video ! It has made my day, my week & my weekend ! I went to a downtown theater as a kid and watched this classic comedy in 1965 when it was first released. Enjoyed it so much ! For some reason I have never seen it shown on TV. I can remember the theme & so many scenes SO very well ! Wonderful ariel photography of so many vintage planes and what a superb cast: Stuart Whitman, Sarah Miles, Robert Morley, Terry-Thomas, James Fox, Gert Frobe, etc ! And to see so many marvelous behind the scenes still is super groovy ! THANK YOU so much for sharing with us ! :-)
You forgot Alberto Sordi, the best italian actor of XX century!
@@lovesmoke100 ahh yes, he of the gorgeous wife and multitude of kids.
@@PhilbyFavourites ....and with best looking airplane(during the race) together with the German one.
I watched it last weekend after.......nearly 50 years! So good! Terry-Thomas, such bounder! (and you better pronounce it 'biyender' or we can't be friends)
Thanks for posting these photos - one of my all time favorite movies.
looks like it was fun shooting that movie
I heartily agree !
1:09 To the left, the phenomenal Gert Fröbe!
Einfach mega der Film....konnte immer herrlich Lachen 🤣🤣🤣
Excellent film
You speak the truth, Kemo Sabe !!
Irina Demick, what a stunningly beautiful woman
Bro idk how I got over here lol but one of the best movies behind Bed knobs & Broomsticks
Terry Thomas was the greatest. Such a very sad end!
They played "Those Magnificent Men..." theme music at his funeral.
How Great is That.
I was a kid when it came out terrific pics
Wonderful❤
Fun fact: A lot of the airplanes have continuity errors. They first tried to use the original designs as much as possible, but were forced to modify them, because most were barely airworthy and not at all able to do what the production crew needed them to do.
Terry-Thomas, Benny Hill, Robert Morley, Gert Fröbe, Eric Sykes, Tony Hancock, Red Skelton, ... Was there anyone who wasn't in this film?
As I do when I take off my hat, you make a good point ! Seems like everyone was in this except Laurence Olivier ! :-)
now you say it...ustinov was lacking.. :-)
@German Retro Guy -- Check out the crowd scenes. They're among the extras. ;)
BEATINFULL
Dash it all, some cad looks remarkably familiar in this moving picture!
Does that cad have a space in this front teeth ?? :-)
thank you! very nice
Derek Piggot advised on and flew several of the aeroplanes that were built for this film which was a risky business.
Joan Hughes the only pilot light enough to fly the Demoiselle .
At 0:17 Jean-Pierre Cassel (who played French pilot Pierre Dubois) poses with Joan Hughes, the wartime flying instructor who actually piloted the Santos-Dumont Demoiselle replica in the movie.
According to Wikipedia:
The replica of the Santos-Dumont Demoiselle, a forerunner of today's ultralight aircraft, was unable to leave the ground except in short hops. Extending the wingspan and fitting a more powerful Ardem 50 hp engine produced only marginal improvement." Further research found out that: "the Demoiselle's designer and first pilot, Alberto Santos-Dumont was a very short, slightly built man. A suitably small pilot, Joan Hughes, a wartime member of the Air Transport Auxiliary who was the Airways Flying Club chief instructor, was hired. With the reduced payload, the diminutive Demoiselle flew very well, and Hughes proved a consummate stunt flyer, able to undertake exacting manoeuvres."
In the movie, the French aircraft flew amazing maneuvers, aiming to hit Benny Hill at the control tower and missing him by a few inches; flying closely over Terry-Thomas' head (Sir Percy) causing him to slide down the roof of his hangar. What a woman pilot! Of course you never see her face in the movie. What you see is Cassel, sitting at the pit, naughtily laughing his heart out.
Fun!!
Sir Percy Ware-Armitage- Don't you think people mulled that over and got the joke? Armitage ware- a maker of toilet bowls.
1:10 Mr Goldfinger
Loverly!
0:06 - you're doing it wrong!
Mote carlo or bust was another fantastic film
Magnificent
Loved it, but curious to know how many actual flying replicas they built and used and what happened to them afterwards?
Most of the flying aeroplanes were replicas. At least the Avro and the Bristol are still flying.
And the Deperdussin, which was an original. Cannot remember if the Blackburn monoplane was in the film, but it too is still flying.
Leif Vejby Hi, saw this reply from you! As a 16/17 year old apprentice, I was working on a Bleriot airframe and Gnome 7 cylinder rotary engine to be in or as a support aircraft for this film! But, the owner died and I never heard what happened to this craft!? Anyone out there know? Cheers
@@nigelparker5886 Must have been interesting! I cannot remember, if there was a flying Bleriot i the film, but in this video is a photo af the tail end being pushed, so most likely there was.
Looks like Ann Welch in front of the Demoiselle - the male pilots couldn't make it fly, they were too large and heavy, so she was given the honor.
Leif Vejby Thanks for that,...I hope that somehow I can trace all my lost work and I may try to contact the Shuttleworth Trust who were involved at that time..1962/3 circa! I’m 74 now..yikes! Running out of time here! Cheers
@@nigelparker5886 You made me remember Leisure Sport's Supermarine S5 replica from the 70s - what happened to it?
Who invited that bounder Sir Percy!
1:32 Yujiro Ishihara 🇯🇵
Such a pity Tony Hancock have more screen time.
Ding dong
Everything I know about ethnic stereotypes I leaned from TMMITFM
Lack of Health and Safety ?
Just like real Life 😙
Gerd Fröbe war doch der Beste !!!!!!!!!!!! Unereicht !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Otto Normalverbraucher, Kindermörder, brutaler Familientyrann, bester Bond-Bösewicht aller Zeiten, Kriminalinspektor, preussischer Offizier, sogar Räuber Hotenplotz, der Mann hatte einfach alles von böse bis lustig drauf.
@@soriac2357 da hast Du vollkommen recht !!! Das war noch ein deutscher Schauspieler !
