This was very helpful, thanks from Edmonton, Canada. For do-it-yourselfer's, without having to remove the Shaft, I successfully got around this problem and for less that $5.00: My pin was sheared off, but bolt was intact. If your bolt is sheared (and obviously the pin too), drill the bolt and use an easy-out to remove the bolt- then follow my steps below. I used cobalt drill bits in a pneumatic to create two new 3/8" holes on opposing sides of the bolt hole, drilled into the drive shaft, without removing any engine assembly. Essentially, I took apart the front (cooling, belts, etc.) and of course, harmonizer. I drilled directly into the shaft, where the harmonizer meets it, with the sprocket remaining in the engine. Mark your points carefully, of course. The two new holes were matched with precision to the same two new holes that I also drilled into the harmonizer, drill press of course. I inserted two roll pins into the two aligned holes, torqued the bolt, and she's better than new. It worked very well, cost only $3.00 for the pins. email if I can help: tbanks@epsb.ca

      Hi Tom
You don't happen to have pictures or drawing of how you fixed your car without remove the crankshaft?

Would you happen to know if you can use a normal bolt vs the extra long Kia bolt

For those that have had the crankshaft bolt come loose, indifference to breaking: The first failure, I found the crankshaft bolt worked loose, and the roll pin sheared off the crankshaft timing sprocket. I replaced the sprocket and harmonic balancer, a long and troublesome, but inexpensive process if done yourself. The same failure repeated after about 10,000 miles. Rather than repeat the same, as long as the harmonic balancer stays tight against the sprocket, and the bolt remains tight, the balancer will work, regardless if the roll pin is sheared off. Line up the balancer as close as possible, AS IF the roll pin was still there and fit through the balancer. Use a white mark on the outside of the balancer to estimate proper position. Use blue locktite on the bolt with the addition of a proper fitting split lock washer. Let it set for at least 24-48 hours, without starting. It should be the last time the bolt comes loose. It's sad that even after a class action suit, Kia takes no action to be helpful. Hope this may help some people that are having the same problem.

my sprocket is stuck with the balancer when i pulled the balancer, can you tell me how you installed the sprocket?
Is it just a matter of sliding it back in the crank shaft? plse help

Would you happen to know how Kia addressed this with the new replacement part? Did they upgrade to a Grade 8 or better bolt? If not does someone out in the aftermarket offer a better bolt? Thanks.

Another fix would to spot weld pully directly onto end of crank in five or six places then use the new bolt. If the crank pulley did need to come off a die grinder would remove the spot welds. Better than being stranded especially if touring off road in remote areas. Replace the timing chain and belt first chances are the motor won't need touching for a long while if serviced reg.
My timing belt has hopped twice now and it's bullshit. I look after it and only thrash it on Sundays.
The Sorento V6 is a powerhouse but uses a tiny clutch that looks like it comes from a 4 cylinder town car.

I've had this happen twice to my 2006 Sorento. It's an absolute sonofabitch getting that broken bolt extracted. The second time, I had a Grade 8 bolt custom made by a friend of mine who owns a machine shop. Only time will tell if it works. So far so good after 25,000 miles. It's a crying ass shame Hyundai designed the pulley like this in the first place.....very sloppy engineering. The Sigma 3.5L V6 is an otherwise rugged, well built engine though.

hey, i have this same car and its been running great for the past year and change. i am hearing a wired sound coming from the engine bay specifically where the pullies and serpent belts are. Could this be the crank shaft pulley bolt about to break?
please help. Is their any preventive measure i could take before this car leaves me and my family on the side of the I-87.
any info would be helpful. thank you.

Yes replace the crankshaft bolt before it snaps. I believe there is a updated bolt, check with the dealer for the most recent part #. They recommend servicing the bolt at I think 40k. The crank pulley is probably moving around on crankshaft and that is the noise your hearing.
      Thanks,
      Brian

Brian Maddy. Also while you’re at it, replace EVERYTHING the serpentine belt runs around including the serpentine belt itself of course. This should be done at least once every 50 000 miles (or 80 000km). You’ll be amazed at the before and after as I had all mine done when I owned a 2006 Kia Sorento. My guess is all this will have a direct impact on the crank pulley and bolt assembly as vibrations from any wearing component that the serpentine belt runs on, is a killer. IMHO.

Definitely use the hardened, longer and offset-head OEM bolt. I'd stay away from any hex bolt, no matter the grade- mostly for the fit inside the balancer.

It is disgusting that KIA has gotten away with this without a recall I have an 06 and mine failed during the beginning of covid lockdown I just had to park it not sure what to do with it I have had a bunch of brand-new Kias this one model has been the lemon and not sure what to do with it, I do not mind replacing normal wear and tear parts, but this is a ridiculous design flaw the burden of this crank bolt failing should be the manufacturers problem not the consumer. This is just wrong.

How would you loosen the tensioner pulley to slip the belt back on

    • @OffGridInvestor
      @OffGridInvestor 4 роки тому

Often enough they have a bolt on the front. The trick is to get a breaker bar (or maybe just a long rachet or pipe on the rachet) and don't push like you're taking the bolt off but kind of lever it and you should get the tensioner to twang down against it's spring.

they would of had to drill it out and rebore it. i had my mechanic do it and then put a grade 12 or something bolt in it so it'll never sheer again. was expensive lol
