Céline Sciamma and Adèle Haenel on Portrait of a Lady on Fire

- The French period piece Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Portrait de la jeune fille en feu) is made by an all-female cast and crew. But it's definitely not intended for an all-female audience, says director Céline Sciamma (Girlhood). The beautiful film, which is nominated for the Golden Palm in Cannes and stars Adèle Haenel and Noémie Merlant, revolves around the forbidden relationship between two women in the 18th century.

I love how, despite this interviewer being insecure in his manhood, Adele still has a very strong presence of her own and doesn't feel intimidated at all. I love the fact that the "28" was on her hand! Adele is interesting and beautiful!
THE 28 I JUST CANT!
@@cronocio1788 I CAN'T EITHER!!!😭😭
The '28' teared me up, also the clarity of the 'Wonderwoman' example, reminded me of the absolute clarity of Héloïse wordlessly directing Marianne to paint Sophie's abortion: I 'heard' this as "What the f**k are you doing?? Paint THIS!!!" -
Some of the responses here could also have been couched less subtly, but I am glad they artfully evoke what could have been said...
Ditto HE'S A JERK MALE 😜 DRAMA QUEEN 😂😂😂😂😂😂 PROBABLY HAD a small penis too .. HE WAS RUDE INCONSIDERATE AND I WOULD REFUSE TO DO A INTERVIEW EVER AGAIN WITH HIM ADELE!!!
I just loved Adèle's respond about just wanting to make a film about two women relationship from another woman perspective for 2 hours and all of a sudden is a big deal, and men can't understand why they are left out of this story. As if the male representation must be the center of attention in anything that concerns women or at least be presence.
02:00 the interviewer : is it like bring me some men and i'll throw em up
Celine : Noooo, bring me life
Celine is the first celebrity that makes me fall in love by her personalities. she is so patient, humble, brave, mature, smart and thoughtful. If i had a gf like her i would die in peace.
At first I couldn’t figure out why Adele found her appealing for a relationship that lasted four years but after seeing and listening to both of them , I now get it. Adele although gorgeous seems to be attractive to very highly artistic and educational mature women who think outside the norm . Just goes to show you how love is fluid.
I agree. I felt I just could listen to her all day as she is so interesting, so calm and intelligent and you really could have such good conversations.
@@b52bomber23 Celine is beautiful. We have to work on trying not to see women from men's perspective.
@@a.r.8954 “ I didn’t mean to imply that she’s not. From the outside , you won’t see them as a couple but after watching and listening to Celine, it’s pretty clear why Adele loved and still have great affection for her. They’re still close to this day and I believe that Marianne was Celine in the movie. It was a tribute to their four year love story. I think Adele was Celine greatest love and vice versa. She wrote that film with Adele in mind. Pretty amazing. I hope one day to find someone who loves me lime that!
@@b52bomber23 I hear ya! Of course you will
The interviewer was clueless and showed his ignorance every time he tried to mirror their statements. This movie was the best lesbian movie I have ever seen to date.
Celine’s rollercoaster sounds were so cute LOL LOVE HER
Huuu
the interviewer was trying so hard to make them look bad and didnt even focus on the film and has no idea of what hes talking about wtf. adele and celine are literally so patient
Truly a film critic who is unprepared, does not know anything about the questions he asks Sciamma and Haenel about "the male gaze' or an alleged "female gaze", and interprets everything they say with an alarming ignorance. This film was clearly over his head.
Moira Jean Sullivan He’s fucking terrible
It kind of felt like he wanted them to give him an answer that satisfied his own view on the discussion around 'the male gaze'. Also starting out by asking about ''the female gaze'' (which isn't really a thing per se) just feels odd to me, especially since he agrees with her after she calls him out for bringing it up. If he doesn't want the subject brought up or thinks it's unnecessary, then why bring it up in the first place? And then I wonder, does he actually think ''the female gaze'' is an actual thing? Because you have dudes who scream misandry and act like it's an actual thing, while it really isn't. Sure, a woman can hate an individual man just for being a man, but is this a societal or systematical problem? No it's not. It's always men who have the most minimal understanding of feminism who ask these kind of questions. Very annoying.
Ophelia he’s almost condescending. Like he’s not expecting them to be smart. He’s fucking annoying. Female gaze question is odd and expecting her to answer that question is so stupid I’m anger
Fully agree with you. Glad that she called his pompous ass out.
@@OpheliaNL Well written. I am so frustrated when my friends ask simillar questions about feminism and it feels like I have to explain everything again and again from the very basics.
Celine and Adele = So Classy and super sexy. The interviewer = Total Douchebag. He gives Americans a bad name. I love how the French can dig deep and express themselves so intellectually and sound so beautiful. Thank you for this movie, it’s now one of my top top favorites.
GiRayne - You are right. Your comment is spot on!
The interviewer has a Dutch accent, not American
feel really related to Celine' thought and what she has done; really admire her courage and talent to express women's experience so extraordinarily. Love her ❤️
this interviewer doesn’t deserve their presences
OMG PAGE 28 is written on her hand!
That scene, when she saw the portrait and the number in the painted book, was when I couldn't hold my tears back anymore. So bittersweet I still can taste it.
Can anyone explain? I saw the scene and Marianne says "give me a figure" and she says "28" but Marianne doesn't seem to turn to page 28 in the movie. i didn't get it lol
Mountain Climber she did turn to page 28 and even drew herself in it
Sesilia Mocanu where can I see that
Emily Wright in the movie, near the end
First time I'm hearing Adele speaking English. I almost lost hope. She sounds amazing.
I’m sure they are very proud of their film and it’s must be exceedingly frustrating to continuously respond to stupid and ignorant questions. Doing press must be their least favorite thing about making a film. Cheers to them for a beautiful movie.
i love how poised and calm Celine and Adele are, i would have gotten really angry
Celine: "So they (men) are in charge (of the gaze). Interviewer: "Still??"
Where can I find the slap my forehead emoji? Jeeze.
Yes, his ignorance is astounding !
Yes haha, I mean man you're literally asking her about female gaze, that's because it's kinda rare isn't it ? Adele said that anyway
it seemed that the interviewer was defensive at first... he seemed to mostly ask questions that would validate his own narrow worldview over listening and learning from the director/actress of the film. what is an interview even for, then? bad craft.
I felt sad for the woman for which he is carrying a ring for.
wonderful film, terrible interview (er)
Celine Sciammi described this as the art house wonder woman. Brilliant 😅
Céline is seriously a very smart person
Damn this movie hit hard all around the world. I loved it
Terrible interview but I love that Adèle has 28 written on her hand. My heart. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Oof, next time get someone else to interview such extraordinary women, not Mr. Mansplain..
the interviewer is weinsten's son? What a questions so follish and machist
Brilliant adèle, speaking about building theories in her mind for character development. So much dedication in a person, hats off to her parents, family, friends and upbringing for making adèle who she is. And this amazing collaboration with celine...bravo
interviewer came for an argument and lost lmao
What a bad interviewer obssesed with his opinions and not willing to listen...
Wow. The interviewer is so insecure. My only guess is that he feels threatened by these powerful women. They have created a film that empowers and speaks to so many people. Allowing people to be able to insert themselves into the story, yet he cannot as it lacks testosterone and ego.
2 of the most amazing, wonderful woman, thank you for being who you are,a beautiful movie
the interviewer acts like a know it all while knowing nothing!
Very disrespectful interviewer that constantly tries to protect patriarchy in cinema :((
It's a brilliant film, a love story. Too bad the interviewer sucks.
Just when you thought Laura Mulvey's essay on the cinematic female gaze is dated, having been published in the 70s, the interviewer reminds you of how recent it might still be in practice. 😵
3:16 we just want to talk about woman between woman point for 2 hrs!
interviewer has no bloody idea
Adele is a goddess
That interviewer has such a sexist ideology men don’t need to be apart of everything women have such a strong presence especially Adele she gives off this energy of I can do what I want and I’m not going to apologise for it. It’s foolish to think women need men to make an impression on anything.
I'm sure both of them wanted to join hands and punch him together like Bollywood heros punching the evil villain
interesting that the women have to go to such lengths to explain the film about women....i have only seen the clips...waiting for the big screen to reapear as i think that is how it should be seen...
can't wait ❤💕
SO MUCH LOVE FOR THEM AND THEIR WORK
Actually couldn’t finish watching this because he was asking the worst questions
You must watch, coz you could see how calmly and wonderfully they both responded, probably even shut the interviewer - "you ask Me!", and not just that, they spoke on acting, the gaze, and sense of feminine rather than just equality, as he might say in a false sense of superiority.
Why is this guy even here?
If I was him, I wouldn't have used my 8mins to ask those kinds of questions
What questions would you have asked?😉
Celine made the film for this kind of man. Men all over the world were deeply moved by POALOF. Many don’t understand why and certainly don’t get the nuances in the film. But they care about the characters. Clever Sciamma always includes the audience in her films.
The interviewer is really bad at his job
I was so right 4 years ago
Mas enamorada de Adèle Haenel❤️❤️😍😍😍
Y yo❤
I can watch her talk all day
Es hermosa... Agresivamente hermosa. Justamente bella.
Terriblemente hermosa❤
"bring me life, and i'll just eat it."
Why wouldn't they bring an interviewer who speeks the artist's native language and then add subtitles, language fails us while its our mother's tongue let alone if it's some forein one we're straggling to bring our thought process into life
« Im living in France hein ?! » 😂
I think the interviewer was very good and somehow I felt that the chemistry between the interviewer and the interviewées is good. He asks some strong and serious questions, just as I'm sure he would a male actor/director. And that is equality 👏🏼 he doesn't patronise them with cute, girly questions. And definitely, both Adele and Celine push back and it's great to see ✊🏽👊🏽ps I love the tones of Celines and Adeles voices 😊 and to all the haters of the interviewer: He actually likes the movie 🎬 👍🏼
아델❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The interviewer a little closed minded but love these women!
The interviewer did a good job. Why so much hate? He got them to share passionate responses, was agreeable with their responses and acquiesced to being pulled into the movie and even praised it plenty towards the end.
I agree. It's typical of the Dutch to have a more confrontational style. Adele and Celine do not seem taken aback and stand up to him gloriously. He is obviously ignorant but he seems open to change his mind (Adele: you ask me! Interviewer: true)
I agree. Hevspoke from his point of view and didn't fake understanding when he didn't get it. No aggression. Just not always on the same page. He did respect Celine and he liked the film I felt by the end of the interview he had advanced his understanding
I agree. It's interviewer's job to provoke to get more interesting asnwers.
Why so much hate ? Well, as Adele said, it's so politicised these days...
Arthouse Wonder Woman 😂🙏💗

This interviewer is so obtuse, it actually funny.
What... a bozo. What the hell is the question at 4:10?? As an actress, do you have to, make an entrance? When you're in a movie, do you have to, show up on screen eventually? AHHHHH
