Had a pair of MTB Sidi's that lasted well over a decade. The sole tread was worn down to nubs but the shoe itself, the ratchet clasp and the two velcro like straps were still in great shape. I tried on so many other brands of shoes that were so tight and uncomfortable that I ordered Sidi via mail order here in Canada right about the time you made this video. Went for the same size 45 that I had before, and went for the Dragon model as well. Despite my wide flexible arch feet these were comfortable right out of the box. And boy do I mean comfortable. With replaceable techno push clasps AND the replaceable treads on the soles, I am expecting two decades out of these shoes. The shoe itself, if it's anything like my previous pair will simply last and last and last. Yes they are expensive, but with so much that can be replaced, the great quality and with the amazing comfort, your dollar cost per year of use will actually be low. Can't say enough good about them. Had the same issue with the strap catching too, but I trimmed them and it's all good now - thanks for doing the video of how to remove that top clasp piece - too late for me, but great for other folks. If you have really wide feet, Sidi makes a mega model with a forefoot that's 4mm wider. Thanks Clint.
Excellent review, thanks! The Boa dials you need for spares are "Sidi Tecno 3 Push-Button Closure System - short". About $30 for a pair of dials. They are much more reliable than Boa dials.
I have an old pair of sidis that have to be going on nearly 20 years old and I still use them regularly. Looking into getting a new pair finally which is why I'm here.
Nice review Clint. I just bought these as well and have a few hundred miles on them between the trainer, mtb, and gravel. I bought them in the mega width since my feet are a little wider (E) and I have a 20 year old pair of Sidi Mega road shoes as well. I leave the top ratchet lever unlocked so I can tighten it as the fit changes while I ride, probably since the shoes are still pretty new and breaking in still. You can also let out the "Boa" by only pressing on one side of the release buttons if you went too tight in the beginning. They release wire alternately; play around with it for 5 seconds and it makes more sense. Enjoy!
Have used a couple of Sidis (current one being Drako). Biggest issue I've noticed with my Drako: the female nut for the screws which affix the replaceable toe tread can loosen inside the sole over time. I've replaced the tread twice, and the female nut (for the toe tread) inside the sole got loose so when you tighten the screw the female nut inside the sole spins, so you're unable to tighten the screw to attach the replacement tread. So if you do replace the tread, make sure not to overtighten (at least for the toe tread). Also, as a general matter, it is a bit complex to tighten the techno dials on the bike - have to press the red button so the lever flips up and then you tighten the lever. All which is hard to do with full finger gloves while riding. Although most people do not need to tighten or loosen dials while riding most of the time. But, my Drako probably lasted 3 times as long as my Spesh S-Works 6 XC shoes because I replaced the tread on the Sidis twice while the Spesh tread gets ravaged if you do an endurance race with a bit of hike-a-bikes (Leadville or Shenandoah).
I've been wearing some Sidi road shoes for almost a year now. I believe the model is called the Wire 2 Carbon Air... or something. I crashed in them while crossing a wet wooden bridge in the fog. Cracked my helmet, sent my rear wheel out of true, and thought I had broken the dial on my shoe. Turns out, it just had some debris lodged in it, and it returned to functioning after a quick clean. Also, they're a gorgeous iridescent purple. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I love them.
Sidi shoes are great, worth the extra $$ if they fit and feel good. They have extra wide sizes too. I have also used other shoes (Giro, Shimano, and others) and have never had a BOA failure on the road or dirt. But I did have a Shimano rachet strap break. It was easy and inexpensive to fix. I love Sidi but BOA too.
Sidi are great shoes.. Have a had a pair for sooo many years.. My clip in MTB shoe is now a FiveTen Hellcat which is great as well..but definitely heavy!
Sidi make the best cycling shoes on the planet! My last Dominator's lasted 19 years. Currently riding Sidi Schott for road/gravel. The adjustable ankle is definitely worth having! Thinking of purchasing either Drako 2 or Tiger 2...
One think I used to hate about SIDI's is that you used to knock the ratchet off the side in the middle of an MTB - now they have moved them off the side to the top. Good review!
I actually blow out the boa dials and guides with an air compressor and lightly lube the cables to help with longevity. If I can minimize the dirt and grit rubbing the cables they seem to last longer or maybe I'm just OCD
I recommend getting an older Sidi with the straps and buckles over the Boa type cable set up. Although the Sidis are better than actual Boa, I very much prefer the strap and buckle. They last forever. I have a pair from the 90s that I’m just now retiring (the shoes Tinker Juarez can be seen wearing).
I've heard of people having issues with the sole wearing out fast or the soft parts of the sole seperating from the harder parts... Has anyone had issues with that on using this shoe?
Get your hands on the genuine sidi memory foam insoles. They made 100km rides in my sidi drako 2’s so much comfier. Same sole as your srs carbon ground
I tried on a new pair of clearance priced($299.00) SIDI Dragon 4 mega size 44 shoes at a store near me and they fit perfect for my wide feet.I do wonder how old those shoes are. I have an old pair of Shimano 44 wide (and they aren't very wide)R088 shoes that need replacing .I can't decide if I should buy this pair of Dragon 4 or order a Dragon 5 .The store does not have the Dragon 5 .Do you know the difference in the 4 and 5 ? What should I do ? Appreciate any help..Thanks..
I really don’t know the differences other than the closure systems look to be a bit different. If you tried on the 4 and it fits well then I would say go for it. Sidi shoes are made really well and have a lot of power transfer.
I've been very happy with the Drako 2, but I have recently developed a very annoying squeaking/creaking sound that eminates from where the lug sole rests against my XTR SPD pedal. Have you experienced anything similar and can you recommend a solution or an alternative pedal? BTW, I have found tightening the customized heel cup to be very advantageous
@@ClintGibbs Perhaps I'm ill-informed, but I wasn't completely convinced with the idea of spraying lube on my pedals, since my XTR's have been working fine for 15+ years, so I used a Dremel tool to shave 1-2 mm of the height off the rather large red lug soles that were creating the squeaking. That seems to have done the trick!
Great review I bought a pair these haven't worn them yet still wearing my sidi dominators how did cut back the strap? Did you take it off if it's not a stupid question check it before you wreck it? 🤔
@@tinshield there is a lot to be said for learning to ride flats properly! They have banned BMX kids in the US (and the world) from riding clips below 13 yo to encourage skills!
Your shoes have an older Boa dial, which I concede is not the most user friendly to replace and service. But newer versions of the dial have a new spool design that's much easier to lace, and Boa has come out with new textile laces that might be less prone to snapping compared to the wires. At this point, the two systems are a wash I'd rather take the more readily available Boa dials over the proprietary Sidi ones in the event of a dial/lace breaking 🤷. And I know Boa's warranty doesn't always get you the right color dial and lace, but it's free. Those Sidi Tecno 3 replacements are 55 dollars, to each his own but I'll take mismatching free dials over paying for replacements any day
What made you go with the dragons? And if you or anyone knows.... what is the difference b/w tiger/drako /dragon/jarin etc. in regards to stiffness? Is it just the features on top? Or the stiffness as well . They look great. Do you wear them for enduro type riding as well?
After more than a decade of use, I wore the tread and cleats on my old Genius down to the soles, I opted for these more expensive shoes as the tread parts are replaceable. The shoe part of my old SIDI's was still in great shape. With the current shoes and replaceable tread, two decades might be possible with these shoes - stay tuned - I'll get back to you in 2041. Expensive as they are,I'm really happy with these - read my post above.
The Dragons are some of the best may choose out there. The only downside I found is they’re not very stable and walking. Shimano is definitely a strong consideration and may be my next shoe for mountain biking.

I need to do an updated review on these. I like them except for the fact that they are the most unstable shoe Ive walked in. For Le Mans style mountain bike race starts they’re pretty treacherous. Other than that shoes are great.
Nice review Clint. How do the dragon 5 compares to the dominator 10 ? The sole is stiffer with srs but they seem to be heavier: I've seen 450g somewhere which seem heavier than trace 2 and dominator 10. Any thoughts ? I am looking for a xc/gravel usage as I have heavy fiveten for all mountain ;-). The Jarin look great as well but the full carbon sole seem may be too stiff for long xc ride.
I have not tried the Dominators. But I did just get a pair of Shimano RX8. They may be worth consideration. Haven't gotten a big ride on them but so far so good. Soles are very stiff.

Just got mine a month ago (after more than a decade on my old Sidi Genius). I reviewed them above. Despite the stiff carbon sole, the rubber tread pieces are set up to allow you to roll your forefoot when walking off the bike. Best of both worlds - stiff for riding and surprisingly comfortable for walking (have been wearing them around the house to allow them to adjust to my feet). They're not track shoes, but are surprisingly comfortable walking.
My 2009 Dragon 2 have just given up the ghost. I've replaced the SRS soles a number of times and a couple of the replaceable parts on the uppers. For 15 years, thanks Sidi. The only issue I now have is getting them the UK (Thanks Brexit/Farage). Sidi will despatch directly to the US/EU but not the UK
These fit true to size, which I'll address in my full review. Maybe slightly narrower? Not much though. People with wide feet need to get the mega version.
BOA provides lifetime warranty for the dials…They will send you new dials, free. I also have the same Giant as yours, but the rubber blocks on the soles came off, and they are not replaceable. Sidi SRS does have replaceable ones, which is a big plus. I. Have two pairs of Dragons.
I took advantage of the boa replacement but they sent me the wrong colored dials in the wrong color string. It's been a few months and I still haven't found the time to contact them to try to get it sorted. Everything is through their website. Just a hassle I don't need.
I have 2 of the SD15 tan and black i use for my singlespeed rides. They feel even better as they break in. I also use them on my indoor bike. They're stiff at the cleat mount and the toe flexes when walking. I also have the Defender midtop and the winter boot with neoprene ankle coverage that are perfect for the nasties that attack us in the Desert of Las Vegas.
@@ClintGibbs No, it's carbon composite -- a carbon insert embedded in a nylon frame. The insert is what provides the stiffness and support. So yes, the is a carbon sole.
Can't beat Italian craftsmanship. Been riding with Sidis for 30 years.

how do you accurately place a your cleats on new shoes to match your old clear positioning
I just hold the other shoe next to the new shoe and match up the cleat position. I always install brand new cleats on the new shoe.
have you ever tried putting cheese behind the wire and turning the boa to cut the cheese? I hear it cuts the cheese nice and thin and evenly.

Have you tried spray lube on your pedals? I do that every time I clean my bike. That may help.

I love my Sidi Tigers especially with my eggbeater pedals. Not too proud to buy last years closeouts that were less than $300.
I read that the treads get worn down really fast and that they are not well ventilated. What's your opinion on that? Thanks!
Ventilation seems fine. The treads are getting a bit worn, but the good thing is a lot of them are replaceable. But so far so good.
I would love to use those but the toe box is just way too narrow and pointy.
They do wide versions on most of there shoes, which Sidi refer to as "mega" if that helps.

Features mainly. For enduro style riding I will probably use some older shoes since I don't want to bash these on rocks if I can help it!

How did the sizing compare to mtb shoes you've had in the past?
I would say, fairly similar. If there is a slight difference, these would be a bit smaller. They are a bit more narrow than other shoes I’ve used.

Most people should go up a Euro size with Sidis. I normally wear a 41/8 US and have to go 41.5 (without insole) or 42 in Sidis.

That’s not a carbon sole, it’s glass filled nylon...it’s very misleading for them to write carbon on it, it fooled you.
It feels just as stiff, which is what really matters.
