My family is Portuguese. Both sets of grandparents had vegetable gardens and grew fava beans every year. They would make a dish with the beans, garlic, onions, tomatoes/tomato sauce & linguica sausage. Not sure if there was anything else in it, but it was so good. This video makes me want to grow fava beans!

True this is an ancient bean. Until today Fava remains a daily staple in our diet here in Egypt.

In Syria large fava beans are a common street food. They boil them in salty water seasoned with lemon juice and cumin. They are served whole with a spice mix to dip in made of salt, cumin, and sumac. So delicious, I miss this snack but I am rarely brave enough to stink up my house by boiling up a batch.

Glad you mentioned the edible young leaves. I put them in salad or just wilted in stir fry. Oh, you can get a pound of dried fava beans from the Asian market for about one dollar. Check the expiration date for recent harvest for planting.

It can also be good to leave your dry stems to over winter as many beneficial insects and pollinators use them to hibernate or lay eggs inside to hatch in the spring.

I love fresh fava beans, and not available in stores where I live, Nova Scotia, but I have found I plant really early , and when the first crop is finished I wait til,the plants start sprouting from the bottom again before I trim of the top dying greenery, and then I get another crop. I am basically harvesting from when they first produce until a heavy frost hits

We grew Fava Beans for the first time this year, they came up and flowered but my husband thought they were bolting in our Mississippi heat in May. There weren't any beans, only flowers so he weed eaten them down.😢
I hope we can plant them again and actually reap the beans from this bean. We planted them in February and did well, but wondering how soon I should plant them in Central MS?

Fava beans when green and fresh, are edible seeds and pods raw. The pods are even better. Also cooked as a whole. Treat just like green beans. Perfect in many dishes from North Africa. Very important in mediterranean diet.

Growing up I used to pick and shell the fresh beans to sell and eat with my family in Poland
They are great when you boil em for a bit when they are fresh, then the skin just peels right off
Good times, now I grow it here in Canada

Hi, Dan. Nice video about Favas. -- spot on with all of the info!
Since 2015. I have been growing a variety of Fava known as "Frog Island Nation". Ianto Evans brought this variety to the U.S. from Peru. Your "Cuscan Super Yellow" variety, however, looks very intriguing. -- thought I'd give it a trial for 2020. Sadly, Baker Creek no longer sells this variety and the only other place I found is sold out. Back to my "tried and true" variety. Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA - 3/7/2020.

When I think of fava beans, I usually automatically think of that movie “The Silence of the Lambs.” 😂😂😂 Anyway - I ordered some favas and plan to wait until next year (late winter) to plant them, here in Alabama, since they are more suited to cooler weather. I didn’t know that!!! Great video, informative, and I’m subscribing! Best - Adam

Don't be sorry, my friend. In other words, no need to apologize for not knowing English "very well". Learning any foreign language is not easy. Your message is fine, but you need to say "in biblical times."
That's not a bad mistake. Your grammar is good and you are able to communicate-- and that is very good. By the way, I am from Egypt, but now I live in the USA. I taught English both in Egypt and in the USA. Keep learning and keep talking and writing in English. Never be afraid of making mistakes. Oh, and a VERY good way to learn is by READING--yes, reading. Read anything that you find--and use dictionaries: printed ones and online ones. One more thing: always ask questions. You can ask people and you can "google " . There is an unlimited amount of excellent information online. Good luck👍🤞.

hi there. I am in southern California, (Los angeles) I need to plant my favas asap for nitrogen purposes. That said, is it possibly to do both in a raised garden bed, cut down the young ones for the nitrogen, and keep a few to mature fully for edible consumption and for seed harvesting. this all being within the same 8 x 4 raised beds.

  • @alyssa0411

Zone 8b here. I just cut down my summer cover crop of buckwheat. I was left with a lot of clay soil when I moved into my house, so I have been adding soil conditioners to break it up.
When would you advise I start planting these from seed? September-ish? They say the first frost is in early Nov. here in SW Washington.

I tried growing fava beans for the first time last year. The plants got about halfway to maturity and got a really bad infestation of aphids. I made the mistake of spraying them with neem oil. It stunted the plants significantly. I have raised beds, with very limited space. It was early spring, so I pulled the plants and used the bed for other crops. I'm considering planting them again, but what would be the best way to address aphids?

Question 🙋🏻‍♀️ Once you have cut the fava stalks into mulch over the land, how long does it take to decompose? Should I help along the decomposition process by watering? Also, should I be mindful to get rid of all the beans…otherwise it may grow more fava stalks right?

Here in the tropical weather I find beans in various varieties looks similar to beans out there but they are creepers plants. While seeds such as fave I collected from temperate countries could grow but very poorly.

    My name is Ian.
I planted some fava (broad) beans several months ago and my plants are now 4' high. Each stalk has lots and lots of flowers. However, the flowers are not turning into bean pods and I don't know why. Why won't the flowers turn into bean pods.
Question - what are the beautiful white flowers turning into bean pods. The flowers have been flowers for many weeks now. What should I do to make the flowers grow into bean pods?

    • @barbd8047
      @barbd8047 Рік тому

@@lapismosi8065 Both. Young tender pods complete with bean still inside can be added to stir fry or older, larger (but still green) beans can be removed from the pods and boiled for about 5 mins in lightly salted water, or steamed over another pot. You can use your imagination whether you want to use a little butter or olive oil, or maybe garlic oil when you serve them, or just eat them like that as a side dish as I do. With older beans you may want to slip the leathery outside skin off after cooking but before eating. Again, I don't. You get to choose. I don't have much experience with dried favas cos I've usually eaten them green, but this year I am saving some to dry.
