  • People have always dreamed of exploring the universe and colonizing other planets. In the vastness of space, Mars, sometimes called 'The Red Planet', seemed like the closest planet to Earth, orbiting the sun, that could potentially sustain life and humans. But what is Mars actually like? Is it really that similar to Earth? Get ready to travel through space as we compare Earth to Mars and see how they stack up against each other.

    Ideally the way to live on mars is to have a massive terraforming program like you said. As Carbon Dioxide takes up the huge majority then Plants would have tons of breathing gas, but I think it would be hard to grow them due to no water and possibly the Radiation affecting the grow of the plants. Possible but a hard challenge.

    To say that Earth is warmer than Mars since it is closer to the sun is only partly true. The Earth is warmer in good part due to the greenhouse effect caused by having an atmosphere. The Planet Mercury has a daytime temperature of 427C, but a nighttime temperature of -173C, because it has no atmosphere. So it can be much colder on Mercury than Earth, depending on what side you park your spaceship.

    1:43 "Because Mars is further from the sun however it is much colder than Earth."

    You were wrong there

    • @cortster12
      @cortster12 7 років тому +2

      Actually, it's both. So no, not wrong. Even if Mars had an atmosphere like Earth's, it would still be a frozen wasteland.

  • @elliottharlow1057
    @elliottharlow1057 7 років тому

    Well in theory it is very possible to colonise Mars, the only thing that is huge that we would have to change about it is the magnetic core problem in that there isn't one. Without it the planet is hit with huge solar flares that well kill it, but Earth however is safe for now because we have a magnetic core which is helped by the fact that it's partially molten, however this will eventually stop giving out as much field defensiveness as it had previously. This is because of the radioactive materials in the Earth that heat the core through what I assume is nuclear fission. So in hindsight we would have to harvest the asteroid belt between mars and Jupiter and then somehow put it inside of the planet with a couple of megaton nukes and then there you go, it's protected from solar flares

    • @elliottharlow1057
      @elliottharlow1057 7 років тому

      And then the atmospheric composition would easily be changed as well plants have already evolved on out planet and if we created the right conditions for them on bare martian ground then lithosere succession could take place. This reduces the CO2 composition which is good for us but not for the temperature problem. This is why mars would make a great farming planet as it's cold there and the plants make it colder, you could theoretically create an indoor environment for livestock, these release methane which is around 25 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. This would increase the temperature there and start to make it more habitable

    Olympus on Mars is almost exactly 3 times higher/bigger than Mt. Everest on Earth. Funny is, that the gravitation is also almost 3 times less on Mars than on Earth. Is that sheer coincidence? No. Because of the gravity on Earth, mountains can't be bigger than 9 km, because the weight is then too high and the whole mountain sinks into the earth until it reaches about 9 km. But on Mars, which has just a third of Earths gravity, mountains can be 3 times higher until they start to sink back. Am I great or not? You won't find this in any book. NASA, MIT etc. If you have any questions or problems you can't solve, ask Me!!! :)

      We don't. Would love to. :) It's just a very popular style right now in the design community.

    Should've used metric as the main unit with Imperial as an accompanying unit

      80% of our viewers are from The US, so we choose to make that the primary. But we did not leave out metric this time, it's in every number :)

      The thing is most Americans understand the metric system as many of them are used to seeing it on every product and such, compared to the rest of us non-Americans who barely or never see the imperial system. Im Canadian btw.

      Those that have been to the Luna actually used the metric system so fail. The metric system is used by the entire science community.

    Interesting video! The hardest aspect in terraforming mars would definitely be finding a solution to the radiation and creating a livable atmosphere... still, it shares some important similarities with Earth that would be very, very hard to fix, such as a good tilt--to little of a tilt or too much of one screws up the seasons and a planet's climate--and has a rather similar day and year, also very handy given the fact that we evolved for earth days!
