Awesome video! I've been wanting to watch a teachable moment video for serve receive. Finished a tournament and balls were shanking everywhere. Struggling with faster serves and not knowing whether it's short or deep. When I realize it's going deep, it's already hit my chest or bicep. Frustrating.

What are the common reasons for a player when they shank a ball off the side of one arm and half the time it can be the hands or middle of the forearms? Half the time the serves aren't even forcing me to move much. Thank you.

I know the question wasn't directed to me, but it got my mind spinning (in a good way) so I'll throw out a shot anyway in case it helps you or someone else! :)
If what you describe happens, I have identified these factors that can make that happen:
      1. A body posture which does not allow for maximal last millisecond adjustment of the arms, basically the body posture makes you slower at adapting.
      2. Psychological "thinking" that makes you slower than what is possible at reacting. Very common for people that think a lot about how to improve in this sport. So basically your mind hindering your body from adapting with optimal speed.
      3. Physical limitations like stiffnesses or lack of strength. Basically your body not up for the job, or tension from one part of your body "spreading" to other parts also.
      4. Bad platform, basically if the platform your arms form is not a relatively even surface, this can at least lead to a symptom similar to what you describe.. Which could lead to frustration and overthinking, which leads to point number 2 and can start a negative spiral.
      5. Brain has never learned how to compute and move arms for volleyball at maximal speed and therefore doesn't even know what "relaxed and quick" feels like. Basically a lack of reaction speed training so the body cannot access its full potential.
      6. This is not really a factor but still noteworthy: Even professional players shank balls, especially in indoor beach volleyball environments, and especially when playing with the Mikasa VLS300. It seems like some serves simply just float too much/too unexpectedly/too late for even professional players to reach "perfection." This doesn't mean we should use this as an argument for not needing to strengthen our weaknesses, but rather a call for realistic expectations. A reach for perfection in an environment where perfection probably is impossible, will almost certainly lead to disappointment which then leads to problem number 2 or other problems in a negative spiral.
As far as I can remember right now these are the factors I have found that can cause what you described. There could be even more of them (if this is the case I hope I will find them in the future, I always keep looking.) One of these is enough to create the problem you describe, but often players have several of these working together. Some people don't believe in the existence of all of these problems (especially number 5.) This was obviously just an overview of the effects with no proof of their existence or even really descriptions of how they work - all of that is stuff that can be discussed but not right here right now! I hope the overview gives some value anyway and at least sparks off some ideas and maybe gives hope!

@@LearnBeachVolleyballFast Thank you Alex for you response. I agree that the platform somehow plays a factor a certain percentage of the time. However, like with tennis I wonder if it relates to eye on the ball, maybe not being at a full stop, or possibly head and or shoulders not staying at the same level or maybe eyes are not focused on the bottom of the ball. I knew for tennis but never had the one on in vball to at least narrow down the most likely 2 or 3 things to fix. Even in warm ups indoors with sand and my old partner was very consistent just peppering I could see how inconsistant I was and am. I would have to think it's easy type of fix but I don't know the root cause so it's still a mystery. For all i know and i caught myself a few times at the point of contact I noticed the hands loosen up and grip not being even. However, other shanks I know my grip and thumbs and wrist were all lined up perfectly.

@@pmvball73 I see! Yeah, for volleyball I have it helps to have people try to follow the ball with their eyes to the platform, so that they at least know how it is done. I don't necessarily think it needs to be done all the time, but for someone who never does it and has trouble passing I think it is a good idea to play around with it..
I can't say anything for sure without seeing it, but from your description it sounds to me like your body posture might not be "optimal" for neither "reaction flexibility" or putting the platform together, just based on the little comment about hands sometimes slipping apart. However, I could be totally wrong here also and what actually is needed is just more deliberateness in putting the platform together. Hard to say without seeing but maybe this can give you some ideas for the next step of the investigation! :)

How do you judge the distance correctly? I overrun a lot on serve receive.

What did he mean by "I love how your arms are not going across anymore"? At 2:15

I can only assume but I think he means that her arms are not moving horizontally. So shes not swinging her platform at the ball just going slightly up with the platform and let the angle work for her
