That's the thing though. Plenty of serial killers have a "down period" where they lay low and don't do anything that would ping them. It could be days, weeks, months, or years. They also have a "berserker mode" that usually follows where they go all out. But that's usually when they know they're about to get caught or have messed up somewhere already.

I am guessing the numbers are much higher over the centuries as there was nothing really in place to protect victims. Serial killers have always existed, but it wasn't until maybe the early 1900s that law enforcement could communicate and share data to connect the dots.
