Ponce's guitar music is a core part of the instrument's repertory, the best-known works being Variations and Fugue on 'La Folia' (1929) and Sonatina meridional (1939). He also wrote a guitar concerto Concierto del sur, which is dedicated to his long-time friend and guitar virtuoso Andrés Segovia. His last known work dedicated to Father Antonio Brambila, Variations on a Theme of Cabezón, was written in 1948, a few months before his death. It is unclear whether the variations are indeed based upon a theme by Antonio de Cabezón or if the theme was the work of Ponce's teacher, the organist Enrico Bossi.
It was Ponce who anonymously created the striking arrangement for guitar of J. S. Bach's Prelude from the first cello suite as performed and recorded by Segovia.
Ponce also composed a "Sonata for Guitar and Harpsichord." Segovia ascribed the Sonata's prelude to lutenist/Bach contemporary S. L. Weiss. Segovia recorded this piece both as a solo and as a duet, performed with harpsichordist Rafael Puyana.

Played this piece for years but I can only dream of being able to sound like this. Heard a bunch of people play this, Segovia and parkening etc…this one is, I think, is how it should be played.
En el libro de Miguel Alcázar "Obra completa para guitarra de Manuel M. Ponce de acuerdo a los manuscritos originales" se refiere que el manuscrito de la obra para guitarra sola se perdió (en el saqueo a la residencia de Segovia durante la guerra civil española) pero que en el archivo de los manuscritos de Ponce aún sobrevive el arreglo para guitarra y clavecín que él mismo hiciera como regalo de bodas para Segovia y la pianista Paquita Madriguera en 1936. En tal manuscrito la obra está en 3/4, y de él toma Alcázar referencia para su edición.
Corazón Otero también edita la obra en Ediciones Yolotl con la misma indicación de compás, y debo suponer que también toma la misma fuente pues ella estudió su obra al preparar su libro biográfico sobre Ponce "Manuel M. Ponce y la guitarra".
it is very interesting that there is no time signature indication at the beginning. in case anyone is wondering, this is in 6/8 but feel it as 3/4

Manuel Ponce es uno de los mejores compositores de musica de la historia. Era capaz de imitarel estilo de cualquier otro compositor. Es conocids la anécdota cuando hizo hizo pasar una pieza de su autoría por una de Leopold Weiss. Cuando después le dijo a su profesor que en realidad se trataba de una obra propia, este no le creyó, el estilo y compositivo era idéntico. Aquí sinduda hay fuertes trazas de Bach

Beautiful composition and performance! One critique - the score would be much "cleaner" and legible if the over editing of fingering here were limited to encircled string numbers rather than right hand fingering which detracts mightily from legibility. If I cannot determine how I wish to finger the score, my bad.
