What would you recommend to someone visiting your hometown?
@DeanaandPhil Strolling around, take a walk in the Rheinaue, maybe visit the Museumsmeile (street just outside of the Hofgarten towards Bad Godesberg) there are plenty of different museums (Art, history etc.), take a boat cruise (up to cologne or down to Königswinter)..
But foodwise man, there are so many nice spots! Cassius Garten, Mr. and Mrs. Hummus, Tuscolo, pizzeria Nennillo, épi boulangerie patisserie, VarieTee, Bongout, just to name a few 😊
@@linnea1316 Tuscolo and Bonngout are great. I loved getting a Milchkaffee at Bonngout and watching the people go by. I'm glad to hear Cassius Garten is still in business. Definitely a unique and tasty place even if you are a carnivore because you don't miss the meat at all. I also enjoyed the chips (chips and curry sauce, chips and egga...) at the Quiet Man Irish Pub.
The German pastries and desserts looks so delicious. German food definitely does it for me!!

I used to live nearby and went there sooo many times. I moved a away a few years ago and seeing this makes me feel so nostlagic, I actually cried a bit 😢❤
It is not easy to visit a city as a stranger. Bonn has a lot more to offer. So there is nothing in the Video contibution about the old town or the former government district and current UN campus. The House of History, which can be visited free of charge, is also worth a visit.
Almost forgot, Bonn has a beautiful station building, unfortunately it was built over so that there are few nice photos. It's very popular with model builders.
The Hofgarten, the old customs, the Koblenz gate and the historic university campus are also worth a visit and and and...
Should have done Brauhaus Bönnsch for lunch/dinner and Cafe Kleimann for Kaffee und Kuchen. Both downtown too.
Another beautiful German City. I can very easily eat German food everyday and be very happy. Everything always looks delicious and I love sour cream. I don't like gummies but I love Peach flavor and right now I am drinking peach iced tea.

@@DeanaandPhil I'm in Pennsylvania and peach iced tea is very popular I love it. I drink two Dairy Iced Teas, one is Turkey Hill peach iced tea and swiss premium peach iced tea both sold in my local food stores in Pennsylvania.
It's called Rievkooche. That's for the Cologne/Bonn area. If you get closer to where I come from (Koblenz) they're called Krebbelchen 😁

You should come back someday and check out "Haus der Geschichte". The museum shows German history past WW 2 and it is pretty entertaining and for free.
When my mom was still alive she often made Reibekuchen and we ate it with salami and cheese, she called it German Pizza. I think that was her invention, people always frown when I tell them, but I actually love that combination, give it a try.
Hey Bonn is also my Hometown. You probably missed out one speciality in Bonn: Ice-cream. There is one Ice-Cream Shop in Bonn who has won several competitions for the best ice-cream. It's called _EisLabor_ and is something of a must visit. When you come the next time to Bonn, you should consider to visit the city in spring at the time of the Cherry blossom. Visitors from all around the world visit Bonn in these Days. It's absolutely gorgeous.
@@idanceforpennies281 The U.N. is there still and many of the less developed countries decided to keep their embassies in Bonn to be close to the U.N. Plus, it still has the national headquarters of Deutsche Post and Deutsche Telekom.
When the relocation of the government and the agencies was decided, an act was also implemented to compensate Bonn for the loss. A whole lot of Money was spent in Bonn as a kind of reparation The results are the museums at the Museumsmeile and the UN Bureaus. Besides the relocation, many departments stayed in Bonn or have a secondary location here. The department of defence, some bureaus of the department of interior stayed here for example
When the internaional business moved out, embassies and consulate needed to be in the new/old capital Berlin, then many uspscale businesses also went out. Some of the more expansive restaurants also closed. You could make good deals on oriental rugs at that time (early to late 90s).
One thing I think Bonn did wrong was to entice a lot new administrations to come to Bonn. That did not improve the housing and traffic situation. With all the politicians it was a pretty distorted market.
I really need to visit Germany sometime and not just for flight transfers (I've had transfers in Frankfurt or Munich before when traveling)
Both the food and pastries and bread just looks so good in Germany, and I also had an amazing ice cream from Langnese while waiting for my connection flight in Munich in 2015.
It's really a damn shame I haven't actually visited Germany, especially considering I'm Swedish and live about an hours drive away from the Kiel ferry! I've also lived in Copenhagen and not even then did I go to Germany even though I could have easily taken a train from Copenhagen or just flown down.
I do like Haribo candy so Bonn just might have to be a place for me to visit, could be a nice trip to take together with my boyfriend (he's Dutch, so Germany is most definitely very accessible for us as both of us live close)
Potato pancake "Raggmunkar" is one of my favourites, it belongs to the home cooking here in Sweden. but here we prefer salted pork in slices that are fried. and to that a little cream and lingonberries
Bonn is one of my favorite places on earth and I miss it… haven’t been since 2019. Amazing place and people. Tuscolo is my favorite!

Nonnevot (Limburgisch für „Nonnen-Hintern“, wörtlich „Nonnen-Hintern“. Manchmal: Nonnenvot) oder Schleife ist ein typisches Limburger und Sittard-Gebäck in Form einer Schleife mit lockerem Knoten und wird traditionell während des Karnevals (Vastelaovend) gegessen. Heutzutage sind Nonnevotten etwa einen Monat vor Karneval bis Aschermittwoch in der Bäckerei Limburg erhältlich. Nonnevotten bestehen aus Mehl, Hefe, Milch, Salz, Butter und feinem Kristallzucker oder weißem Puderzucker und werden in (Sonnenblumen-)Öl oder Schmalz frittiert.
Das Gebäck ist sehr alt, bereits 1676 wurde es den französischen Kommandeuren angeboten, die die Stadt Sittard einnehmen wollten. Es ist nicht ganz klar, woher der Name „Nonnevot“ genau kommt. Es sind mehrere Erklärungen für diesen seltsamen Namen im Umlauf. Eine dieser Erklärungen ist, dass die Franziskanerinnen, die zwischen 1600 und 1700 ein Kloster in Sittard hatten, dieses frittierte Gebäck an Leute schenkten, die Lumpen und Lumpen brachten, deren Erlös den Armen zugute kam. Eine andere Erklärung ist, dass der Name von der Schleife herrührt, die Nonnen früher am Gesäß trugen (limburgisch: oppe vot).
In Süd-Limburg ist das Nonnevot auch als Bow oder Shtrik oder unter der Sammelbezeichnung für ähnliches Gebäck bekannt: Poefel. Poefele ähneln Berliner Brötchen und sind mit Marmelade oder Gebäckcreme gefüllt.

Well Bonn is a student City. It has approx 300.000 inhabitants while Bonn university has 30.000 students so actually 10% of the people there actually are students

Mayo with frites (chips) is almost standard in Holland. And Belgium is right next door where the "French Fries" originally came from. Putting ketchup on chips is almost a travesty.

I love those potato pancakes! My grandmother used to make them especially at Easter. ❤ I mix mayo and ketchup. I loved in Utah as a teen and "fry sauce" was served even at fast food restaurants. It was about the color of big Mac sauce but no pickles.
Thanks for the memories. I lived there for six years a while ago. It was nice to see Bonn through your eyes. You were close to several beer gardens, which would have been fun to see. I agree with other commenters that you should go to Haus der Geschichte when you revisit Bonn. The sound of the people hammering on the Wall brought me back to my first stay in Europe in 1989. Gasthaus im Stiefel is good, but Brauhaus Bönnsch is better and you would enjoy drinking beer from their fun glasses. There is also a good Eiscafe in Bonn-Beuel right in the city center where the Bahn takes a right turn to head into the village. German ice cream sundaes would be a great video - they are so decadent compared to the boring American choices. And if you go back for the Weihnachtsmarkt, the best Glühwein stand is at the Kaufhof entrance under the sign.
They just need to add a few capers on the plate to go with that salmon! Lecker!
I am from Hannover, and I have never been to Bonn! I am a composer and that is Beethoven's place of birth. I will go there soon.
Plunder is just stuff, a near synonym of Tiel. I don't know why but they are applied to sweet pastries or buns as well. In English plunder was borrowed in the sense of stuff looted by soldiers or pirates.
My hometown as well. But haven't been there for like 15 years. Miss the Rhine river, watching the ships and the old castles and stuff around.

Phil, we could be distsnt cousins. I am 1/4 German. My maternal grandfather's family is from the North Rhine-Westphalia , Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate regions.
Hättet Ihr mich vorher gefragt, hätte ich Euch mindestens 2 sehr gute Konditoreien in Bonn genannt. Nichts gegen Voigt, aber eine gute Torte ist eben eine Klasse besser. Rievkooche spricht sich übrigens "Ri:fko:che" (der Doppelpunkt steht für einen langen Vokal) aus und heißt auf hochdeutsch nichts anderes als "Reibekuchen".
You should totally visit Münster oneday tho. It's especially nice during winter when the christmas markets are opend but in summer its also nice when you love riding bycicles or like going to see the harbor area of other cities hehe (the harbor of Münster is mainly a university student area now full of cafes and bars)

My mom’s maiden name is Stiefel so I really perked up when I saw that restaurant name! 😁 Our ancestors are from Thüringen, as far as we’ve been able to establish - and came to America in the 1800s.

You don't have to decide one or the other mayonnaise or ketchup. You can have both in something that here on the island of Puerto Rico we invented mayoketchup is made of ,mayonnaise, ketchup, lemon juice an garlic , it goes well with almost anything

Bonn used to be the only city in Germany that had an Outback. Yes, we drove from Kaiserslautern for brown bread, a Bloomin' Onionn and a steak

I think with 'Plunder'they want to describe tho dough, that's airy. It's with Blätterteig, is it not? I remember when i was a kid, we used 'Plunder' as somwthing fluffy, withoutsubstance, maybe that is why😁
Potato pancakes are very tasty. I have never eaten them with apple sauce.

Towards the end of the war, Bonn was a combat zone on the ground; before that, it had been regularly attacked from the air for several months.
Practically the whole city was destroyed by the end of the war.

My vote Ketchup! especially on fries. Mayo is ok on maybe a sandwich (I prefer mustard) or cold pasta salad. I'm surprised Bonn didn't have a special sausage. Safe travels D&P.

Have you guys been to Königswinter? Pretty great views, pay for a train ride up and the visit to the Schloss something or other, then hike back down, it's well worth it.

Pro tip on ketchup vs mayo on fries; mix them together about 50/50! Try it.
The salmon could indeed be fancier. I actually had exactly that dish the other day. But the salmon was thicker, darker and very well seasoned. Not bigger though overall. Just small rolls. The salad was great too and a mango dressing.
I was thinking that is the lightest colored salmon I ever saw and I eat salmon weekly. Thinking it might have been a different oily type fish, but they enjoyed it and that's the most important.

Balkan soup looks almost like a gumbo.
Ketchup oder Mayo? Hmmm...Salz und Pfeffer!!! 😂 But I would try the German mayo because it is different than the mayo here in the U.S. When it's crispy fries like that, neither. I enjoy the pure potato mouthfeel texture and the potatoee taste of crispy fries.
Now, if those fries were here in Texas I think the 2 popular condiment choices would be Ranch dressing and Louisiana Hot Sauce!! Now THAT'S a hard decision for me. 😇

Riiefkooche, y’all! Don’t overcomplicate it. Also this dish probably has a different name in every other Kaff along the Rhine and up into the Eifel. For example my parents would call them „Kräbbelche“… don’t ask me why.

I heard you saying you are from the north of Germany. I know a lot of peole there can speak "Plattdeutsch". A language that is very similar to Dutch. Do you speak that too? Northern German people also regularly come to Groningen. Do you know that city?

It's not part of the "Ruhrpott" which is the coal region, but rather part of the "Rhineland" including Cologne (and maybe even up to Aachen?). Of course it is very close...

Love the video. Confused by eating fries with a fork. Also your music has improved. Since living in Germany I have given up on rumpsteaks. Maybe I could reconsider in Bonn. We're in America now and amazed by all the plastic and Styrofoam used in restaurants even dine in!! Like, teriyaki joints Serving dine in with plastic ware and in a Styrofoam take out box! I'm so freaking germanized. And I love deannas gen x use of dudes etc.

Eating Fries with a Fork is quite common, not everyone is doing it though. It is basically for avoiding getting your Hands dirty, because People usually eat Fries with a good Amount of Ketschup, Mayo or other Sauces.

A new german word for Deana to learn: Krumbierepannkouche 😂 That‘s how we call Kartoffelpuffer in our Region. / Ein neues deutsches Wort für Deana zum Lernen: Krumbierepannkouche. So nennt man Kartoffelpuffer in unserer Gegend.
I am surprised about "rump" steak. In the US "rump" is a cut of beef that needs to be braised in liquid like a pot roast.
I think you re right cuz every rump steak I've had in Germany was crap. when I complain to the chef he thinks his rump steaks are great. So he knows nothing about steak.

Today I went to Bonn and ate at the bakery and the Gasthaus, but the restaurant is expensive, the food was certo good, but the price not.
