Facebook is actually trash. i deleted it for about 4 months but i had to reactivate it because it turns out being in university and not having Facebook makes things a little difficult. The only thing Facebook has, as you said, is a user base and money. Nobody uses Facebook because its a superior platform, its what happens when 1 billion people use the same site. You have to use it as well in order to function efficiently. Facebook has made no real progressive contributions to social media and instead simply buy out the people who do. Facebook as a platform has been irrelevant since 2010 yet it still remains simply because of the amount of people who use it. And i don't think its going away anytime soon.
Well you use it as a way to communicate with others. The way to create chat groups and the way to create "groups" and "sides" are awesome both for private people and companies.

I don't know if this will get to you, but there is such thing as seeing content in chronological order - the little button right next to the "neews feed button" which is on the left. I actually have facebook as a bookmark with URL of that button so I always have it in chronological order.
