I think that echo shell with a G1000 jacket underneath will keep me warm up to about minus 10 or so Celsius on a day with some added wind chill. The echo shell trousers are warmer than the echo shell top. They are considerably warm. Add a backpack and it will very noticeably help you to stay warm some more but it isn't the best choice of cold winter outfit. There is nothing better for rain other than having a gore tex raincoat in your pack but if you walk too much with that type of coat on than your own body sweat due to trapped heat will get you wet plus you will also stink. If it is a crazy down pore than get out of the rain, a lighter rain and you can walk right through it with echo shell, plus both layers breath through and dry easily.
Thank you so much for your perspective on this jacket Ted! Been looking at mountaineering waterproof jackets for a while now and this video has me sold on the Keb Eco-Shell! Very helpful, informative video!
Looks like a great jacket, Durable and extremely versatile. At first I had imagined it being good for use during the fall/spring. I didn't realize it could be used as an outer shell during the winter and because of the ventilation, in the summer too. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.
I've tried this jacket several of times in stores, and the overall feel and design of the Keb is very good. I like the softness of the fabric and it feels more comfortable than comparable jackets with Goretex and similar membranes. The only thing stopping me from bying it, is the lack of handvarmer pockets. Fjällräven's take to this, is that it's supposedly more comfortable when wearing a climbing harness, without the lower handwarmer pockets. But how often does someone wear a climbing harness? They could just have placed the pockets high like everyone else have done. I would have bought the jacket first time i tried it, if just Fjällräven havent made the bad decision of no handwarmer pockets.
Hey! Thanks for your comment! I think another reason for the lack of pockets in the lower part of the jackets is also because of the hip belt on most backpacks would get in the way!
Hey. Yes, same reason as the climbing harness. I just don't get why Fjällräven thought it was more important to completely remove the pockets, rather than just place them higher up on the jacket. It works fine with other jackets, which are made for hiking, climbing etc. They should have offered the jacket in two versions. One without the pockets, and one with pockets. I'm pretty sure a Keb with handwarmer pockets would sell a lot more than one without. So, note to Fjällräven: Please add pockets, thanks in advance
Hi there, I actually prefer the fact that the jacket doesn't have lower pockets. I do a lot of canoe trips and having to swap gear in and out of the lower pockets every time I get out for a portage and put my pack on... Well, I'd end up not using the pockets anyways. In fact, I rarely even use the chest pockets on this thing on canoe trips because my PFD is over top. In the winter, it would be nice to have some pockets there but it would add bulk, weight, and warmth to the jacket in the warmer months and I wouldn't want that trade-off personally. Additionally, the jacket is quite light and flexible so any items held in those pockets wouldn't have much support and would end up moving around a lot when active. Furthermore, the placement and adjustability of the core vents allow me to access the pockets of my mid-layer underneath if I ever need to warm my hands, or if I don't have pockets on the midlayer, to just keep my hands next to my body... But most of the time I'll have gloves with me to throw on anyways. So with that feature I think it essentially eliminates any use I have for lower pockets. I get your thought process for sure; it'd be nice to have for when you don't have a pack/harness on, especially if the pocket was made of mesh for additional venting options, but I think that the activities this jacket is meant for... Most people wouldn't end up using them and they'd be wasted. Cheers bud, I hope you find your perfect jacket! There are a lot of great options out there, so don't compromise if that is a key feature that you want!
Actually, I forgot to mention, there is another version of this jacket for colder weather: the "Keb Eco-Shell Parka" that has many of the same features, with the addition of some top loaded bellows pockets by the waist that have openings at the side to warm your hands. It also seems to be longer, have a light mesh lining in the core area, and a detachable synthetic fur section on the hood... However I don't own the jacket so you may want to see it in person if it fits your needs. Good luck!
Thinking about buying the Keb Padded Hoodie along with the Keb Eco Shell for extreme cold NY winters and skiing Canada/Colorado. I could also use them for cold hunting days/hiking. Good choice? This might be my birthday present this year.
I've got this jacket on my wish list. I'm getting the Skogso this summer and the Eco in the fall. Your videos are outstanding and you make a HUGE effort to reply to every comment. That's just amazing!
@@M1_K3Y The eco shell was disappointing. It looks damn good (no doubt), but it is worthless in terms of being both waterproof and breathable. I didn't buy the Skogso jacket, but may eventually do so. I do swear by their pants and have a couple different models. I just recently purchased a pair of Vida Pro trousers (olive) recently and they are outstanding.
Thank you for your experience. The classic look of the Greenland and the Raven jackets turned me on to Fjallraven but I don’t think the shiny buttons would look great with shorts which I wear as often as possible spring/summer/fall. Skogso wasn’t my first choice but has been growing on me as a more everyday/ versatile option. the Kaipak I think has several improvements but is not very available in Canada. Some of the wind jackets would probably be fine but I would prefer g1000 for the hardwearing material and able to use it without worry when camping.
Another great review Ted! I personally have that jacket too and so far have loved it. Something that I know that was designed into it is that the sleeves are strait (no tapper) so you can roll them up to make it a short sleeve jacket for warmer weather. Keep up with the great content.
It breathes better then any other jacket I've used however, the trade of is that it needs reproofing often in my experience , it's very quite and softer then any other shell I own
Hi Ted, have you had the opportunity to try the jacket in different colours? I have recently tried a dark navy in size small and quite liked the fit, but then ordered a black jacket. I could swear the black jacket fits a bit smaller. I have hear from anyone else saying the same thing? Thank you for both a potential answer and for your videos. Cheers, René
Hey René! I’m afraid I haven’t tried them in different colors but I’ve seen them hanging and they all look to be the same size, it sounds weird to me that they are different in size due to color. Could it be that you tried a women’s version? Thanks for your comment!
Ted Weirum hey , they were both men’s jacket. I know it sounds weird but both my wife and I seem to recall the first one I tried being a bit bigger. Part of my challenge is that the first jacket I tried was at a store over 100 km from here, andI don’t really want to go there just to try the jacket. so it’ll have to wait a bit before I can verify if I dreamed it. Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it. Take care! René
+Error 404 thank you! I take my time and enjoy what I’m doing, I’m in this for the long run, I’m still practicing and learning a lot! :) thanks for watching!
Seems really similar to the klättermusen allgrön in a good way, allthough it seems to have more pockets. And I agree, these types of jackets are amazing. Nice video.
Hi Ted, I purchased the Keb Eco-Shell jacket in november, and so far I realy like it. I wear it 7 days / 7, to go to work (I live in Quebec City), to shovel, to snowshoe, to run when it's -30C with the wind, etc.... The only concern is that I'm not sure it is very durable (like, let's say the Patagonia Triolet). I wander if the jacket will still be waterproof in 6-7 years ?? And a other question : do you apply the DWR very ofter (what frequency) ? Finally, congratulation for your videos, I really like it !!!
Hey! Thanks! I wear mine pretty much every day too, so far I haven’t done anything to it and it still works out just fine. I find it durable, I’ll see if I can do a comparison video between this one and the Bergtagen shell jacket! Thanks for watching!
@@TedWeirum So, as I understand, you did not put the DWR on your jacket yet ? On my part, after 2-3 months, water don't "roll" on the jacket anymore and seems to be adsorbed by the outer layer. Is it normal ??
Just bought one, its a amazing jacket as far as features and feel. But i have to say its really large in size. Im 6.4 and usually barely fit L jackets and this one i had to go with medium. (ofc thats a bonus as i seem slimmer then i am) but just beware that its really large in size before ordering.
@@TedWeirum Hey Ted. Great videos! I have a question about sizing: is the Keb eco shell sized as a regular Keb jacket? I wear M on my Keb and Keb Touring jackets, but only because the S feels a bit tight around my chest. If this material is thinner, and the fit roomier, would an S be a better choice for me then?
Hey brother! I would go with the same size as you have in the other models, you always wanna have some extra room for layers underneath, you also got cords around the jacket to tighten it up if you’d need to! :)
I wonder how this compares to Arcteryx (Alpha SV or something similar)? I just recently discovered Fjallraven and heard great things about their brand quality.
Quality wise I think you’re looking at similar capabilities, I think the way they’re made and the environmental thought behind the product is where fjällräven differs!
Hi Ted. Great review. Keb is a awesome jacket but the price is tough. I bought my first Fjallraven jacket last year, the Skogso. it's a lightweight jacket that works well for what need for now. still learning how apply the wax to the G-1000 properly. Have a good day. Peace.
+Jay Michaelson thank you! I get what you mean, good that you bought the jacket that suits your needs, the eco shell jacket is made for the extreme conditions with constants weather changes but the jacket is also a part of fjällrävens environmental mindset, they compensate for the product of the jacket, in the long run that’s what we need to do, so far we only have this planet.. :) thanks for watching!
Hello Ted! Im more than curious is this jacket a silent one? Im trying to observe animals and want to have silent multifunctional jacket, I love most of Fjallraven gear but thinking about choose 'silent goretex for hunters by Harkila - let me know your thoughts btw great job!
Thanks! Yeah it’s silent, I haven’t had an issue with it while observing animals! Then again I tend to stay still but the little movements haven’t made much of a noise, thanks for watching!
Would you recommend eco-shell over G-1000? Ive recently converted from goretex to G-1000 as Im doing more camping and bushcraft rather than hiking and mountain walking, but my Sten jacket has kept me adequately dry in rain and snow so wondering is its necessary to buy an eco-shell jacket, which is basically like a goretex jacket..also, Is eco-shell as as durable as G-1000? Cheers
If you are looking at buying something new I would go with ecoshell but since you have the g-1000 Sten jacket I would stick with that until you are knowingly going in to rainy weather camping, then I would consider buying the ecoshell. Durability wise I’d say that the g-1000 feels a bit sturdier but I would still choose ecoshell, it’s really strong and definitely durable enough! Thanks for watching! :)
Ted Weirum ...after seeing the jacket on sale 60% off, I couldn’t resist buying one :) As you suggested in the video, will use it only for wet conditions out in the wilderness or mountains, heavy duty and urban activities will be left to the G1000 jackets. Just wondering, how do you look after the jacket? With my old goretex jackets, I just cleaned them in the washing machine with either Nikwax or Grangers cleaner, then used a DWR proofer again from either brands. Can I do the same in Eco-shell or do I have to use the Fjallraven DWR spray? Cheers.
Nice to hear that you got one! I’m sure you’ll love it! I had a look at their website and the do sell a spray as well so i recommend getting that one, you can read all about it here: www.fjallraven.com/customer-service/care-repair/eco-shell/ Thanks for watching!
Hej Ted! First of all, thank you for your fantastic videos. Your videos allways guide me properly when im looking for upgrade on my hiking gear. However, if I may recuest, please make a review on fjällräven polar fleece jacket. I would also like to hear your opinion on using it like a mid layer under Keb eco shell. Thanks again, really enjoing your videos.
Great video! Just a question, I read a lot of reviews on the Fjällräven website about the jacket not really being waterproof. This is not something you experienced?
The first years it worked great but after that it slowly started to be less waterproof, the good thing is that they are aware of it and working on a solution!
Hi Ted! Now after many years of use, how do you feel about your keb eco shell? I Got some another brand 3 layer shell, but after some years of use, the inner membrane start to rip and shed so waterproofness get lost, even when had threated it correctly with care products. Now I’m thinking to replace my old shell with this Fjällräven one. I’m I in the correct direction? Have yourself experienced some of the afforementioned issues on your jacket? Thank you very much, the best!
Hey Ricardo! I understand your thoughts, I don’t think there’s a shell jacket out there yet that will last forever that’s also made in a responsible way. I’m still happy with my eco shell jacket, I haven’t treated it very carefully to be honest and only used water repellent about two times on it, so waterproofing has gone down after the years of usage. It’s a good jacket and I’m sure you’ll be pleased with it! :)
FJR 's jacket is awsome, the only dissatisfaction is that they have been changing products in the past two years. I have two jackets, and now they are all old versions. BTW, the Ovik eco-shell looks extreme awsome for cycling😍, but I still know few about eco-shell fabric, it compares with gore tex, etc.
Hey! Yeah they did! I went through that change, first I bought the Keb jacket, then I realized that the jacket I want is the Keb eco shell! It is what it is, but now I’m one happy camper with the eco shell, it definitely compares with gore tex! Thanks for watching!
@@TedWeirum Yes, I saw the Ovik eco-shell jacket had a good discount on Backcountry. I really wanted to buy it. Ovik has two big pockets on the back, which is very useful for cycling, but other designs seems not as professional as Keb (hat, wrist, chest zipper design).
Agree with some comments below about the views, you deserve a lot more that's been seen. Your videos amazing and the information is spot on! About the Eco shell, this jacket is hands down the best shell on the market when it comes to performance and comfort. I was debating between the Eco shell and arc'teryx Theta AR. The Fjallraven was a much sturdier build and didn't sound like I was walking around in a plastic wrapper. With the money saved, I also purchased the Eco shell pants and I use the duo all year round in Canada by adjusting my base and mid layer, if necessary. The sticker shock was concerning, but as mentioned, if you're going to explore; the gear needs to perform! Fjallraven gear will never let you down. Looking forward to many more videos!
+lafo0100 wow, thank so much! You just made my day! :) more videos are coming, anything particular you would like me to review? Again, thanks for your comment and thanks for watching!
TedWeirum, you've reviewed all the Fjallraven gear I have. I purchased all my gear based on your reviews and have to say I'm blown away by the functionality and quality of the items. Keep doing what you are doing my friend, the exposure will come!
Hey brother, you can’t really compare the two since it’s two different materials, if you’re out in windy and rainy conditions I’d go with the Keb jacket any day of the week, the skogsö jacket is good too, wax it and it will resist some rain. It all boils down to when and in what conditions you’ll use it. Lighter conditions go with the skogsö, heavier conditions it’s the Keb all the way! Thanks for watching!
Thanks man! I’ll do a comparison in the future, it’s a little bit different style on the bergtagen but the quality in material is pretty much the same! Thanks for watching!
Först skaffades jackan, efter att jag sett din video om den. Nu har jag beställt byxorna också.... skitbra grejer! Tack för alla kvalitetsvideos du gör!
Thanks for the review. What is your chest size in inches or cm? The website tells me to go with a XXL for a 54 inch chest. The last time I followed FjallRavens size chart instructions, it was way too big:/ I have a FjallRaven Anorak #8 coming in the mail, but I might send it right back for this eco shell. I'll be hiking 5 - 10kms on some days, exposed to heavy snow fall or slight rain on other days, more than half the time driving area to area with a bit of hiking in between on the mean terrains of NorthWestern BC mountains.
Hey Paul! I get what you mean with sizes, it’s made like that for you to be able to have layers underneath the jacket should you need to. The best is of course to try it with the amount of layers that you would be using. Don’t know the exact size of my chest, I’m 181 cm and weigh in at around 77-80kgs and I’m good with a size M! Hope it helps, good luck your adventure! :)
I found this eco shell jacket in my local store! The large fit so I can base layer and mid layer up!:) Question, I almost went with a medium but that was almost tight fitting with the mid layer, that would defeat the purpose of layering right?
Hi Ted. Just found your review on UA-cam, perfect - thanks. I am currently looking for a shell jacket and have already decided that it has to from Fjällraven. I am, however, having a hard time deciding between the Keb eco shell and the Bergtagen eco shell - what are your thoughts?
+Jan Rasmussen I’ll give you my thoughts but first I need to know where you are going to use it and for what? The more details the better! Thanks for watching!
Hi Ted. Thanks for getting back to me. I am looking for an all round year round jacket. Living in Denmark there are not that many challenges when it comes to climate or terrain. When i go hiking it is Sweden ( Abisko, Fjällraven Classic) and Norway - mostly in the spring and summer time. Come March 2018 my wife and i will be sailing with "Hurtigruten" from Bergen to Kirkenes and some of the activities we have planned are dogsleding and riding snowmobiles. To me, it looks like the Bergtagen jacket has a few more details then the Keb jacket ? I plan on buying the shell pants as well but have no problem combining Keb pants and Bergtagen jacket - or they other way around if that is the best solution.
+Jan Rasmussen great!! Sounds like some awesome adventures! I would still go with the Keb, it will do what you need, sure the price difference isn’t super big but it’s still there! I think whatever you choose you will be happy, but my answer would be Keb eco shell! Best of luck!
Nice review, but I have this jacket, and haven't washed it yet, however in heavy rain it is not water proof, the rain soaks the jacket and causes dampness on the inside. Anybody had this problem and are there any solutions. I do have the Fjallraven spray for proofing but doesn't seem to help.
Appreciate the cinematic quality of your videos. Quick question, how much does this jacket compress/pack down? Does it pack down into itself (inside pocket or something similar - stuff sack)?
+Kris Mathisen thank you so much! No stuff sack or anything like that, it’s pretty thin so I tend to just jam it down in a outer pocket of the backpack or put it on top of it for quick access. You could roll it together and compress it to about a 20 cm wide roll and about 6-7 cm thick! Thanks for watching!
What size are you wearing? Is this jacket true to size or does it run big like a lot of Fjallraven's stuff? I'm roughly 175cm and 77kg and usually wear medium but I wear small in the Raven and the Greenland no 1 jackets.
if I where you I would go with an M, or I did go with an M, im 180 and about 75 kg, you would want some room for middle layers and so on as well! good luck!
Hi Ted! I have a question. I recently bought the Eco Shell jacket and I am so happy with it. Last week I also found the Keb Jacket, with the stretch parts & G1000 weave, on sale. Now to my question? Do you think having both these jackets serves any puropse, or is it really any point in having both? The Keb Eco is lighter, and waterproof. The Keb jacket is heavier, not waterproof. Maybe it breathes better, but you have loads of ventilation on the Eco shell, pit sips and two way front zipper. Do you think it´s worth it having both jackets?
I think you’ve already answered this question my friend! Stick to the eco shell! The Keb jacket is great for snow and wind but you also got that in the ecoshell! :)
Is there any problems with water repellent?? I heard eco shell is poor at that point(getting wet fast, losing breathability)compared to other hardshell materials ....
Hey! With the right amount of layering it most definitely will! The jacket itself is pretty thin, it isolates good so if it’s a colder day you can either put a fleece or a down jacket underneath and you will stay warm!
Hello Ted and thanks for a great review! Do you still use this jacket and if you do how has it held up? Any wear and tear or lamination separation? Was thinking of geting one but the price is kinda prohibitive 😅
Hey! Thanks for watching! I’ve used it for around 5 years, I had the opportunity to return it to the R&D team at Fjällräven so that’s what I did, it was very well used so I hope we can see some improvements in the coming versions. It will stick with you for a long time, really important to treat it regularly with the right products for a prolonged life!
Hey Rasmus! I would go with somewhat loose cause you’d want to be able to get a middle layer in there for those colder days or when you’re stopped for a longer time! Thanks for watching!
@@TedWeirum Thanks, i think i go for the XL, because i want to lose some weight, im just started alot of hiking. And it seems im very hooked on that :) Thanks for good videos :)
Thank YOU! Hiking is a great way to exercise, there so many benefits from it, a lot of them are mental as well! Thanks for watching brother and good luck!
Thanks brother! Most welcome! I have a bit of experience, it depends on what your adventure is, sometimes I find regular rain trousers to do the job just as well, but if your plan is to be in a winter environment then I’d go with the shell trousers!
Hey, that depends on the adventure! I used the high coast hydratic last time i was in the mountains and that also did a great job, less money, similar capabilities, might not be as durable. So it all depends!
Great video Ted. I am interested in getting this jacket myself, especially after seeing your review. Could I ask if you've experienced any wearing or damage on the jacket when wearing a rucksack over these 2 years? The fabric feels soft and I'm concerned about how the material would cope with friction over the long term. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. :)
+Andrew Read great question! So far I haven’t experienced any wear and tear on the shoulder parts, as you can tell from the video I’ve used a bigger 85l backpack and also a smaller 38l but so far there’s not a single sign! I can recommend this jacket 100%! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for replying so quickly - one more question if you don't mind - does it need re-proofing (as in waterproofing like Nikwax or similar) often and if so what do they recommend you use? I can't see these details on the Fjallraven website. Thanks again, really helpful!
Inga problem!
Another awsome review!. nice to hear you've been rocking it for two years and that it is still going strong! keep it up Ted!. Ps, I've seen some instagram activity, might there be a hiking video coming up?:)
+joakim bäckerö thanks for watching, I hope this was what you asked for! :) there might, but there’s bigger news first, I’ve changed a lot of things in my life, it will be clearer for you soon, just need some time to talk about it! :) but there’s definitely gonna be more hiking videos!
Thanks for watching! The best thing is for you to have a look at fjallraven.com and go to care and repair, there you’ll see all the information on how to look after your gear, not just the eco shell but all of Fjällrävens products!
Hi there - I am 185 pounds and 6 feet tall - I own a Fjallraven Barrents Parka in medium - do you think I would be medium in this jacket as well? Also does it pack well? I will be spending most of my travels in Asia (sunshine to heavy rains quickly) I don't think it will be very cold however but i am looking for a durable jacket to stand up to the travelling. Thanks!
When it come to rain and wind it will be no problem, when it comes to size I advice you to try it in a store just to be sure, it’s important that it sits well and that you can have layers underneath!
Jacket looks great, but I still think it's too expensive. Check the austrian brand Carinthia for relatively cost effective high tec clothes, rain gear and sleeping bags, also issueing some of the worlds best armies. Kind regards!
Hi Thomas! I’ve heard a lot about Carinthia, I was actually looking into getting one of their 1-person tents! Fjällräven is a bit pricey but you get what you pay for and I really like their environment thinking that they put into all of their products, of course this will cost more to produce but in the end it will help the planet we live on! Thanks for watching brother!
I can absolutely recommend Carinthia (Austrian Jagdkommando, UK Royal Marines, NED SOF and many more armies and units trust their stuff) and of course Fjällräven is a superb brand. It's always a question of resources you want or can spend and with a regular pricetag of €650,- for me its a bit too much, as my girl and I also bought a T6 Beach in 2016, bought a new appartement this year and we got parents since a few weeks. So, actually money is running through the hands ATM... 😉 Carinthia is very attractive for me, as I am part of the Austrian Army Reserves and I do missions abroad from time to time. There we get the stuff for a reduced price + tax free. Good vibes and good channel! Keep the Cali rollin'!
I had a feeling that you where a part of the army! Nice with a lot of stuff going on! Don’t forget to stop and enjoy the moment, it’s a lot of work with a kid but seeing them grown and develop is the the greatest reward! Best of luck to you brother! :)
Thank you, also to you! If your travelling brings you to Graz / Austria you are kindly invited for a coffee or drink, Cali-meeting so to say, just send a msg if you want. 👍 Cheers!
All the jackets or clothing items that I have owned with a laminated construction have delaminated over time. Marmot, mountain hardware, gore, cloudveil. It usually happens first in the high wear areas. Because of this don't expect these items to last forever, especially if you wear them everyday.
@@TedWeirum I ordered the 2018 in dark olive. It looks more green then brown specially in sunlight. On your video it look coffee/chocolate brown. Maybe they changed the color during the years. Want a more true brown. Think i will try order the Khaki, see if its better.
If you look at the figures available online, Ecoshell is more or less on par with Goretex Pro, which is the top of the line Goretex product, usually found in Arcteryx jackets, in terms of waterproofness and breathability. But as Ted said, Ecoshell is environmentally friendly whereas Goretex is toxic to produce and uses toxic chemicals to provide its DWR. In fact, Greenpeace and many environmental groups have asked people not to buy Goretex. The one area where Goretex is better is durability, because Ecoshell uses recycled polyester as its face fabric, I don’t think it will be as durable as its rivals that use nylon for their face fabric, including Goretex.
@@driftertravels928 That is what im afraid of. Despite i want to support environmental frindly product, 500 USD is lot of money and i want high quality durable jacket. I can have Gore tex Pro 3-layer for this amount. Why i should buy less durable item?
Big fan of Ted, but objectively no jacket is worth this price tag. You can get 95% the value for $150-200. Less than half the price. And if you're an outdoorsy person it's better to buy a jacket that will be worn to hell and then buy a new one then to spend half a grand on a jacket. Especially since this Jacket is a generalist jacket, not specialized for heavy winter nor hot climates. So plenty of cheaper options exist. Will you sacrifice one or two features, totally, but it will pay off better in long run I think.
Only found your channel recently, but I have found it incredibly helpful! (-: Hope more people will follow and subscribe, I am telling fellow outdoor fans about it.
there is nothing that sets those armpit zippers apart from the other brands. In fact i would say those armpit zippers are very poorly designed, since they dont go all the up towards your elbows.
DO NOT BUY, IF YOU'RE AFTER WATERPROOF! Had mine for a couple of months, absolutely loved it too, then the heavens opened - now, I live in the Pennines (UK) and we know what rain is here - and this jacket leaked badly after being caught on the hills in a deluge. It could've been an expensive mistake, though I've been able to send back for a full refund, as not fit for purpose.
+Joel Holford sorry to hear that Joel, this is not the experience I had with it, you saw yourself in the video how it rained and the jacket made it just fine!
Joel Holford ok, maybe it was. I’m talking about the rain from the canoe scene, if it’s harder than that you are probably swimming.. :) glad you got your money back though! What jacket are you using instead?
TedWeirum I've still got my old Arc Theta, which is still bombproof; was after something with less crackly material. Gutted as thought I'd nailed it with the keb, back to the drawing board. Any ideas appreciated. Oh btw, when it rains here it rains and comes at you every angle possible!! So was akin to walking in a pool ha
i see! have you had a look at the new Bergtagen series or have you completely lost faith in fjällräven? we also have rain from all directions here, I still think this one does the trick.. do you have any video or photos from that trip? maybe it's better if we just stay inside.. :)
Hej Mats!
@@TedWeirum I had to do it twice last year, I live in Ireland it is very wet here and I use the fjallraven brand spray other then that I am very happy mine is the anorak/smock version I don't wash it often in my experience washing often does not help waterproof jackets
@@TedWeirum you need to apply DWR more often and with more care than for gortex. If you don't do it well it will leak. Gortex on the other hand is more forgiving and is still water resistant to some degree without DWR where eco shell is not at all.
@@TedWeirum first and foremost it must do the job well, then come other factors like environment etc. Moreover Gore Tex is using recyclable materials as well. I like Fjallraven but they just can't compete in this bracket.
+Nathan McGonnell thank you Nathan! I’m glad you liked it! This is a jacket you can use any time anywhere!
Looks like a great jacket, Durable and extremely versatile. At first I had imagined it being good for use during the fall/spring. I didn't realize it could be used as an outer shell during the winter and because of the ventilation, in the summer too. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.
+North Country Adventures thanks brother!
Good luck!
Hey man! Thanks a lot for your comment, I think you covered it all, really good points, I couldn’t agree more! Thanks for watching!
Och där gick man in och köpte sig en KEB ecoshell. Så glad att jag hitta denna otroligt bra kanal. 🍃🖤
HELT RÄTT! :) jag är också glad att du hittade hit! :)
Thinking about buying the Keb Padded Hoodie along with the Keb Eco Shell for extreme cold NY winters and skiing Canada/Colorado. I could also use them for cold hunting days/hiking. Good choice? This might be my birthday present this year.
Go for it! happy birthday! :)
I've got this jacket on my wish list. I'm getting the Skogso this summer and the Eco in the fall. Your videos are outstanding and you make a HUGE effort to reply to every comment. That's just amazing!
Thanks Michael! Hope the jackets work out well for you!
Did you get both? I’d love multiple Fjallraven jackets but I can only start with one, which do you find is a better all-round everyday jacket ?
@@M1_K3Y The eco shell was disappointing. It looks damn good (no doubt), but it is worthless in terms of being both waterproof and breathable. I didn't buy the Skogso jacket, but may eventually do so. I do swear by their pants and have a couple different models. I just recently purchased a pair of Vida Pro trousers (olive) recently and they are outstanding.
What happened with the jacket? Have you talked to Fjällräven about it?
Thanks for the review. I’m looking for a quiet shell jacket for hunting in rainy British Columbia. Looks like the Keb will do the job.
hey, sorry for the late reply, thought I answered this before, I think the key will do the job! best of luck brother!
Ted Weirum I could have swore that you did as well. Weird.
UA-cam ghosts! :)
Does it actually breath as well as most would like? None of my expensive membrane jackets breathe very well - whatever the tech spec say.
I think it does, of course the side vents help, it also down to what you do and what you have underneath and the temp outside :)
Take care! René
Ok! Well I hope it works out for you, it sounds weird! Good luck!
Short but clean. Thanks for the video! Was very helpfull!

Seems really similar to the klättermusen allgrön in a good way, allthough it seems to have more pockets.
And I agree, these types of jackets are amazing. Nice video.
+Belgianbadger thanks! Many more to come friend! :)
I guess that depends on usage, I don’t think water rolls of my jacket either anymore but it definitely still doesn’t get through.
@@TedWeirum OK thank's a lot for your answer. Very appreciated.
Just bought one, its a amazing jacket as far as features and feel. But i have to say its really large in size. Im 6.4 and usually barely fit L jackets and this one i had to go with medium. (ofc thats a bonus as i seem slimmer then i am) but just beware that its really large in size before ordering.
I get what mean, I think it’s designed that way for you to be able to fit lots of layers underneath :)
@@TedWeirum Makes sense... just wanted to make sure I wouldn't get surprised by a larger M. Thanks for the quick reply :)
No worries!
Ted Weirum thank you
I think the Lappland eco shell was designed to be silent for hunting
Thanks..I think my Sten jacket will last for a few more years so will stick with it and keep waxing! Keep up the good work.
Thanks Eric! Good luck with your jacket!
I had a look at their website and the do sell a spray as well so i recommend getting that one, you can read all about it here: www.fjallraven.com/customer-service/care-repair/eco-shell/
Thanks for watching!
bought this thanks to you! no regrets! wooo!!
Niice! I wish you many great adventures!
Hey Ramin! thank you! when I get my hands on that jacket ill make a review! :)
Great video! Just a question, I read a lot of reviews on the Fjällräven website about the jacket not really being waterproof. This is not something you experienced?
The first years it worked great but after that it slowly started to be less waterproof, the good thing is that they are aware of it and working on a solution!
@@TedWeirum shouldn't you reapply the DWR coating once in a while? Or does it lose its waterproofness despite recoating?
@glennjanssens8326 definitely do it regularly, it still might lose it’s waterproofing after a while.
@@TedWeirum thank you very much shun!
Anytime!
Super awesome walkthrough of the jacket! Only problem is that now i HAVE to buy it ;-)
+Mark Vesterskov haha, I know the feeling! But you won’t regret it! :) thanks for watching! :)
Hello was wondering what color this was that your featuring?
Dark olive!
I can see how the two pockets on the back are useful, I don’t know about the material though?
@@TedWeirum Is the same to the Keb -- 3 layer eco-shell
Then you should be good with that one right?
+lafo0100 that’s a great honor to me! Thank you so much! I will keep it up! :)
1:11 “Right now, I’m going uphill.” You sound like a good ole southern country boy!
I probably watched to many Hollywood movies!
Ted, how does the Keb compare with the Fjallraven skogso jacket?
Hey brother, you can’t really compare the two since it’s two different materials, if you’re out in windy and rainy conditions I’d go with the Keb jacket any day of the week, the skogsö jacket is good too, wax it and it will resist some rain. It all boils down to when and in what conditions you’ll use it. Lighter conditions go with the skogsö, heavier conditions it’s the Keb all the way! Thanks for watching!
very detail explanation 👍, how comparison between bergtagen eco-shell and this keb eco-shell ?
Thanks man! I’ll do a comparison in the future, it’s a little bit different style on the bergtagen but the quality in material is pretty much the same! Thanks for watching!
Agreed! Nice that you found one! :)
Thanks for your review really helpful - could you share what model you using in the video? E.g. is it Khaki or Dark Olive. Thank you. Jesper/Denmark
Thanks Jesper! The model I have is dark olive!
How long have you had the jacket? have you talked to Fjällräven about it?
Great review but on their pants have you done one? If not I'd love your opinion. Thanks
Hey Steve, haven’t done one on the pants yet, might happen in the near future though!
Thanks.
Hey ted. Just wondering I normally wear fjallaraven jacket in s. Should i go true to size or one size bigger?
This one will be a bit bigger so you can fit layers underneath, if you live where you’ll need to layer up I’d go with s :)
@@TedWeirum hey isit the same as a skogso jacket?i mean the sizing
Think this one is a bit bigger
Hi , how is the fit on this jacket .
I am 182cm tall and about 90kg . o was thinking to order a large but not sure
I’d go with L if I were you!
I'm roughly 175cm and 77kg and usually wear medium but I wear small in the Raven and the Greenland no 1 jackets.
if I where you I would go with an M, or I did go with an M, im 180 and about 75 kg, you would want some room for middle layers and so on as well! good luck!
Thank you for the speedy reply an info! Do you find the jacket to be fairly baggy without any puffier mid layers or even just one?
I would say yes!
Thank you for the great review video. I am 180cm and 75kg as well, I want to order the Medium but I have longer arms. How do the sleeves feel on you?
Thanks for watching! :) they’re ok, I think you’ll be fine, the go a bit down on my hands if I’m not closing the Velcro! :)
Do you also use eco shell trousers or what do you usually use?
I will see if I can get a pair, as of now I don’t use rain pants, I just wax my trousers, that’s usually enough! :)
Not as far as know, my experience is that it really holds up well! I’m taking it with me now to Padjelanta so I’m trusting that it works!
Hi Ted, great videos. I’m thinking about buying one of these jackets. After a few years now have you had to reproof it much? How is it holding up?
I’ve had it for about 5 years now, reproofed it once!
@@TedWeirum Has this jacket been updated since you made this video or is it still the same model with just different colours?
Hi, Will this keep you warm when its freezing outside? Thanks!
Hey! With the right amount of layering it most definitely will! The jacket itself is pretty thin, it isolates good so if it’s a colder day you can either put a fleece or a down jacket underneath and you will stay warm!
@@TedWeirum thank you! Im 1.90 and ordered size L. Hope that's fine :-)
Next mission: find a fleece to combine it with!
Hur är storleken i jämförelse med vanliga keb-jackan? Tänker om det är olika skärningar och så.
Likartad skulle jag säga! Tack för att du tittar!
186 cm and 80kg and wearing size M in Greenland no.1. Should i go for M or L you reckon?
L I’d say, since you might want to have layers underneath as well!
What would you recommend in size? I have tried a XL and it fits well, but shoud it be tidy or loose?
Hey Rasmus! I would go with somewhat loose cause you’d want to be able to get a middle layer in there for those colder days or when you’re stopped for a longer time! Thanks for watching!

Hello Ted. Do you have any experience with eco-shell trousers? What are your thoughts? Thank you in advance. Btw I love your channel!
Thanks brother! Most welcome! I have a bit of experience, it depends on what your adventure is, sometimes I find regular rain trousers to do the job just as well, but if your plan is to be in a winter environment then I’d go with the shell trousers!
@@TedWeirum Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Will certainly buy them as I love my eco-shell jacket already. Will keep watching your channel!
@dastreetsnapper7300 thanks brother!
Ted, after so many years: would you still buy the Keb Eco Shell again?
+Andrew Read no worries! I’ve never reproofed it in anyway nor do I think it needs it! It’s built to last, this is the jacket I use to this day! :)
Kanonrecension!
:) but there’s definitely gonna be more hiking videos!
sounds pretty awesome Ted! cant wait te hear all about it!. And thanks again for the review!
+joakim bäckerö my pleasure! :)
Hi Ted. Nice review. Very informative.
May I know ur height and the jacket’s size? thanks
181 cm and a size M : )
I love this jacket
me too! :)
Really cool and high quality video, thanks!
+Jussi Ahola thanks for watching!! :)
Hi Ted great review. Is this jacket water proof or water resistant?
Proof! :)
Thanks Ted I have order two one for me and one for my son. Can’t wait for them to arrive!
Russy.adventures hey Russy! Happy to hear that, I wish you both great adventures!
What is the best way to wash this jacket any recommend methods?
Thanks for watching! The best thing is for you to have a look at fjallraven.com and go to care and repair, there you’ll see all the information on how to look after your gear, not just the eco shell but all of Fjällrävens products!
I use Nikwax Tech wash
Sounds good, I hear a lot of people use that!
Ted Weirum - It’s quite expensive but you definitely get what you pay for!
Totally! :)
@@TedWeirum unfortunately I do not have a store that has fjallraven near me. I have to take a gamble!
Check! I’m 181 cm tall, weigh about 75 and I’m good in a size M, hope that helps!
👍 Cheers!
I just might Thomas! I will be passing by Austria in February! :) I’ll let you know! :)
Hi ted, what size of the jacket u use ? And how tall you are?
At the time it was an M, I’m 181 cm tall! :)
How about the the dusk colour u used at fjallraven channel ? Also M size ?
Yeah! :)
What trousers you use in that video ? Thanks ted.
Keb gaiter trousers! :)
What is this jacket color?
Dark olive!
All the jackets or clothing items that I have owned with a laminated construction have delaminated over time. Marmot, mountain hardware, gore, cloudveil. It usually happens first in the high wear areas. Because of this don't expect these items to last forever, especially if you wear them everyday.
I agree!
Is that Khaki or Dark olive?
Dark olive!
@@TedWeirum I ordered the 2018 in dark olive. It looks more green then brown specially in sunlight. On your video it look coffee/chocolate brown. Maybe they changed the color during the years. Want a more true brown. Think i will try order the Khaki, see if its better.
Yeah I found that color to be a bit different, it’s hard to place it!
30 000mm vs. Gor-Tex?! Can someone explain
The biggest difference is the way they’re made, eco shell is more environmental friendly I’d say
Im 167cm and 53kg. Xs size ok for me?😎
It should be fine! :)
Ted Weirum I hope😀
Really nice video!!!
+Arber Baqaj thanks! I had a lot of great tips and help! ;)
Awesome review
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Here for the pronunciation of
:)
What hat is that I must know?!
Hey, thanks for watching! You’ll find a video about my hat here: ua-cam.com/video/ER8aUtMs7Ro/v-deo.html
Cheers!
I like design, how do you rate durability of material?
It’s really good, this video is a bit old now, still use the jacket to this day, still works! :)
Thanks brother! Really appreciate your input on this one! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Only found your channel recently, but I have found it incredibly helpful! (-: Hope more people will follow and subscribe, I am telling fellow outdoor fans about it.
Thank you so much, really appreciate it! :)
@@TedWeirum you are very welcome! Your channel deserves more views and subscribers.
there is nothing that sets those armpit zippers apart from the other brands. In fact i would say those armpit zippers are very poorly designed, since they dont go all the up towards your elbows.
Interesting, what the benefit of it going all the way to the elbow?
DO NOT BUY, IF YOU'RE AFTER WATERPROOF! Had mine for a couple of months, absolutely loved it too, then the heavens opened - now, I live in the Pennines (UK) and we know what rain is here - and this jacket leaked badly after being caught on the hills in a deluge. It could've been an expensive mistake, though I've been able to send back for a full refund, as not fit for purpose.
+Joel Holford sorry to hear that Joel, this is not the experience I had with it, you saw yourself in the video how it rained and the jacket made it just fine!
TedWeirum maybe it was an issue with their QC. Although it was harder rain than in your video, I was soaked across the shoulders and top of my arms..
Great jacket but you need to reproof all the time
I just reproofed it once in all these years, I did it to show everyone how to, how often do you reproof it?
@@TedWeirum I've had it 3 years and had to do it 3 times!
So once a year, what product do you use to reproof it? Mine still holds up! Do you get a lot of rain where you live? Do you wash it often?
@@TedWeirum I had to do it twice last year, I live in Ireland it is very wet here and I use the fjallraven brand spray other then that I am very happy mine is the anorak/smock version I don't wash it often in my experience washing often does not help waterproof jackets
Ah ok! Thanks for sharing, yeah like you say washing it doesn’t really help when it comes to waterproofing it.
Too expensive
no, it is not worth. tried and tested. Get goretex
What happened? Care to elaborate?
@@TedWeirum you need to apply DWR more often and with more care than for gortex. If you don't do it well it will leak. Gortex on the other hand is more forgiving and is still water resistant to some degree without DWR where eco shell is not at all.
@@TedWeirum ua-cam.com/video/wGwMTXNoLw8/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TheWalkingDane
I guess you’re right, but then again isn’t this material better for the environment?
@@TedWeirum first and foremost it must do the job well, then come other factors like environment etc. Moreover Gore Tex is using recyclable materials as well. I like Fjallraven but they just can't compete in this bracket.
