    Y'all love to make African Americans the face of these things. I'm not sure why the camera is always trained on us when discussing Affirmative Action. It's no secret that African Americans aren't benefiting more from these programs than other groups, particularly white women. Why aren't the people representing the members of these demographics interviewed for these stories?

      Absolutely agree. But the reality is that hbcu’s simply don’t have the funding leverage, major sponsorship markets and opportunities for national exposure that the pwi schools have to lure in those athletically gifted yet impressionable kids.
      It’s a shame because those pwi schools would barely be able to keep their doors open if not for all the profit those gifted black athletes generate. Those young athletes just have to understand that as much as those institutions do.

      @@RamboYT1818 According to a 2019 report, most universities lose money on athletics. There are only 25 profitable Division I programs; the rest lose roughly $16 million every year. All of the schools in Division II or Division III have consistently reported financial losses from athletics over the past 16 years.
      I am all for getting rid of college sports and letting the private sector handle sports/athletics.

      @EnduranceTrainer Місяць тому

      @@chiquita683you are assuming athletic students do not have these skills. Actually, life isn’t as seen on TV where Black athletes are being tutored by a white student or having their tests taken by a white student. Many schools will bench an athlete over grades, so they won’t get picked up by a college with a scholarship if they aren’t playing.
      So that myth of the dumb athlete is a lie you have been fed.
      Check out the multiple NFL players who either have college degrees, or like my cousin, who is in the NBA, who was a no draft pick, left college early to go into the NBA, then to finish his college between his NBA schedule.

    In a sense…one positive outcome is increased enrollment in HBCUs. It can become a reinvestment in the black community. School funds are determined by property taxes in the US, you know this. Richer parents taking their kids to private school and charter schools taking in certain people only makes it so that these public schools never improve. Poor kids generally, but especially black kids, are put in these places that are destined to have low passing rates and produce kids who can't read or do math due to "no child left behind". In theory what you're saying is good but who actually campaigns on this and tries to make things equal from the beginning. Then you have legacy and nobody cares about them and how much space they're taking up. @@Lovelyone1that’s certainly true but a lot of that has to do with funding. The reality is that competitive high level collegiate sports is a billion dollar business. Without the enormous profits from competitive college sports, most major pwi schools would barely be able to keep their doors open.
      If 90% of the top black athletes in the country realized that and instead chose hbcu’s and took all the big time sponsorships with them it could generate a $billion in revenue for hbcu institutions in the span of a single season and help them expand.
      The opportunities that could create for the AA community in general is incredible. But of course the pwi schools don’t want that and will entice talented black athletes to join their programs to give the illusion of integration to keep those billions in scholarships flowing.

Can you imagine living in a country where people could accurately assume every black person went to an HBCU? I think blacks should focus more on why so few of them even get to college. Black people are the minority in the country so it’s a given you will be a minority is almost every institution. That’s ok. Therefore if I admit a black student with a 92 score over a white student with a 93 score then Im stealing something from the white student. As if a 1+ point difference means a person is overall superior than everyone else who got a lower score. Being good at taking standardized tests does not make you a better candidate. Everyone over a certain threshold of GPA or test scores already has merit. People who were able to overcome socio economic hardships and get there are more deserving to be admitted than someone who had it easier from the beginning, that is real merit.

I had friends at UNC, Duke, NCSU, NC Central, NC A&T, and Morehouse, and all were top students in high school who could have been accepted anywhere except for possibly Duke. Previously, schools maintained a desired percentage of ethnic groups that met their respective entry requirements. For example, I know of an ACC university not accepting some Asian American students because of the school's desire to keep their student body diverse. The only time those entry requirements were lowered was for select athletes.

The school brings thousands of people from all over the country /world together. We can't claim that individual behavior defines the 'university '
    I also think about the young black people living off campus in nearby cities who do not have the privilege of an advanced, high quality education. If I view myself in a pool with them and my schoolmates - i question those who only focus on "my threats [diversity] " as a justified means of ignoring the other threats that these non-students face, which some people on campus being warned not to go to social events in these areas. I have an advanced degree: college is an outdated model. Most of us are in debt with jobs that could not possibly pay us enough to repay our loans. America is broke. There are very few lucrative jobs and this is a smoke screen to disguise the truth that they don’t have enough jobs to give us all these 6 figure jobs. We are a few years away from a major issue when these top schools are going to be graduating people who are working low paying jobs. It starts with the blacks, then it’ll spread. When it hits the whites that’s when it’ll be another January 6th.

      HWU was given more dollars to build their academic programs from State Legislatures. HBCU weren’t given enough to maintain the roof much less academic programs.

    After affirmative action was struck down by the US supreme Court, I have seen a rise in Asian students and a decline of nearly every nationality at my university. Blacks and Hispanics were hit the hardest at my university. We need to bring back affirmative action so universities Will be more diverse.

    Indian students are now replacing the African American student.. in addition to increased Hispanic enrollment.
    You should ask what can you do to better prepare AA students starting in middle school. Are teachers the issue? Enrichment opportunities? Or parental involvement.
