I'm really enjoying Vince's new experiments with opening and presenting his videos. More doggo is always a good thing
Awesome, glad you like them. :)
Thought I'd paint red skin on a tiefling model. As I haven't tried this before figured I'd do a quick search for guide.
I literally can't remember the last time I was thinking of trying something and you didn't have a tutorial on it. Thanks for all your hard work.
Glad I could help!
Omg...the BEST HUMANS have BIG, LOVELY DOGS!!🤣💥😁 Now I'm 100% "in" on your channel, appreciate you even more if possible...😂❤🐾❤😂
PS: Sergio Calvo (I think you've referenced him somewhere) has a German Shepherd. I only know that because I told him I'm trying to paint a super cool Dire Wolf in the pattern of my beloved 🐾 boy. And he told me he also loves a German Shepherd (he obviously went from an expert I admire to "Top Tier"). THE BEST PAINTERS HAVE THE BEST BIG DOGS!!🐾😂❤😂🐾
**Even though your big baby thinks he's a lap dog, apparently...💛
***You were already "Top Tier" for me, your Golden just seals my opinion.💛❤💛
I have three of them total, I will have to see if I can get them into more videos. :)
Vince, did you read my mind?! This is exactly the topic I was looking for! My next project is going to look all the better for it!
Pretty sure Vince has a spy cam looking at my 'to be painted' table
Awesome, always happy to help. :)
That's the most quiet I've ever seen one of the dogs. So used to the loud greetings on Warhammer Weekly. 😆
That one is the quiet one. :)
Vince, I have thanked you in so many videos and I always think I haven't thanked you enough...
You taught me just about everything I know concerning miniature painting.
A sincere, deeply felt thank you!!
Thank you, that means a great deal, always happy to help. :)
A heartfelt thank you for keep making videos that inspires me.
It baffles me that yoo can keep putting videos out that is consistent high quality AND is interesting. Others may make maybe 50 great videos on youtube - and the either the topics gets "weird" or the quality / interest of the youtuber fades away / or I just get annoyed with something about them - but you just keep on putting out world class content. Thank you so much - you are a inspiration to us all.
Thank you, I will
Great tutorial my friend. I think the thing i appreciate the most out of all or your videos is the no stress style... i feel like your not holding your breath and clinching your cheeks to paint. Just pure slapping paint and building skills... Thank you
Yep, always gotta keep it fun. :)
Larry always makes me want to pick up some Ogres. There is something about the size and folds that makes it look like a really good canvas for improving painting skill, especially in regards to flesh.
Yeah, it's such great practice for muscles. I love painting ogres, great canvas.
I really like the new way you do the intros and talk to the camera more and more. 💯! Great content per usual oh holy technomancer!
I appreciate that! I wasn't sure people would like it, but I'm experiementing with more stuff. :)
Super informative as usual. I can never make enough time to practice all the good advise, but I will keep trying! Thanks, Sir!
You can do it! :)
I usually remember to hit the like button when you prompt, but today I hit it instantly because of the doggo!
Gotta like the Doggo.
Once again, I go to try something new, put in a search, and sure enough, you've got a video on it.
Thanks for sharing all your knowledge :)
My pleasure!
That’s the video no one asked for but surely everyone needs at one point.. thank you Maestro Venturella for bringing us high quality content with a superb, professional theorem and explanations. I can’t be grateful enough and words can’t say enough how glad I am witnessing the likes of Sam Lentz, Roman Lappart and Miniac & Ninjon in this golden age of mini/model/hobby-painting. 🙏🏼🌞 keep it up!!🤘🏼🦅💨🪶
Aw man, this is my first time seeing the doggo in the intro!
I didn't have any issue with the intros on your other videos... until now.
That's fair, I would use them in all the intros, but they never want to sit still. :)
It’s like you made this video just for me. Thanks Vince!
Glad I could help!
Thanks for helping me learn to paint, Vince.
Thank you, always happy to help. :)
Can't wait to learn more about futzing. Sounds already like my new favorite painting technique.
It's going to be a fun one for sure. :)
This is good ! I like the new format !
Thanks! Happy to help. :)
New to this channel and I'm incredibly in love. A video about counter-shading would be really helpful as I'm struggling with it currently.
Welcome, glad to have you along on the hobby journey. When you say counter-shading, what do you mean, happy to add it to the list. :)
I may also claim you are a mind reader: I just ordered the Kimera paint set and thought a bit more about single pigments blending. This just skirts your "exploring colors" which I found invaluable. I might be able to translate this a bit into the 40k Skitarii cloaks I will be dealing with shortly. Thanks for attending to your encyclopedic library!
Yep, you could pull the same transitions on cloaks for sure. :)
Nice! Needed this for my khorne bois! Enjoying your MH product! Hope to see you guys implement them more!
It's criminal that this channel doesn't have a more subs when you compare the quality of information in this channel vs some of the more higher sub gimmick based hobby channels.
Well thank you, that means a great deal to me, but as long as people are watching and learning - I am happy. :)
Another great tutorial and I’m hoping your wise words will get me past the depressing “ugly phase” within which most of my figures seem to languish! Thanks very much for your insights and guidance.
Yep[, never fear the ugly phase. :)
Yet another fantastic lesson from the master himself!
Always happy to help. :)
Can't wait to try this!
Have fun! :)
Larry the Ogre reminded me a ton of a Baron of Hell from Doom. That look was great!
I hadn't thought about that, but you're right!
I love AK Sunny Skin Tone. Use it all the time after I saw you first use it. Great video.
Thanks, always happy to help.
Thank you for this, I'm in the middle of some tieflings and I like your highlighting on this.
And I like the angry Larry :)
Awesome, this would be great for that style of Tiefling. :)
More doggos! Please. Love your videos. Great job!
I'll do what I can to work them in. :)
cool video! always great to learn from you!
Thank you, always happy to help. :)
Love it! Nice work Vince. Seeing your intro makes me wonder, do you think you could do a Hobby Cheating on paint storage? You have a lot of great shelving and racks and cool things there that keep you organized and I feel like a lot of us (namely myself) could really use some help with how to store paint supplies effectively and cheaply.
Thanks again!
That's a great idea, I will add it to the list.
These hobby cheating videos are awesome. I'd love to see something like this for blue skin too!
I'll see what I can do. :)
Vince is KING
Thank you, always happy to help. :)
Doggo warrants an immediate like. I always like your videos but the pupper speeds that up!
Apprecaited. :)
"you need to get comfortable with the ugly face/phase..." I like that! :)
It's the best thing you can do, every good looking model has a bad looking phase. :)
You're the best, Vince
Thank you, always happy to help. :)
Thanks Vince!
Thank you! :)
Its so cool to see Larry again!
He was never really gone. :)
Pick whatever red you want, proceeds to pick one of the hardest paint lines to get a hold of.
Pro Acryl red is a perfectly fine substitute it's really good. :)
@@VinceVenturella I'm just jelly of your Kimera paints.
Hey Vince, would you be so kind as to make a video on how to keep stray dog hair from spontaneously floating their way into onto my brush? Are there such techniques?
Also more dog please.
Oh, for that, I have no answer, it's the bane of my life.
@@VinceVenturella ever find a dog hair in paint that's dried? Makes me want to shave the dogs
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Thank you 👍
Larry, the hero we all do not deserve!
He is the icon of the channel. ;)
I thought I had it bad when my cat was trying to sit in my lap while painting! Miss my dogs, good boys and girls all. I will get to red skin. Right now I'm painting blue!
Yes, she would gladly sit in my lap all day, not much painting would get done then. :)
Re: futzing, I have noticed it seems to work that way too. Even when airbrushing a gradient, going back and forth between midtone, highlight and shadow seems to give a more convincing look than starting dark and slowly getting brighter. Having two airbrushes really helps, so you don't need to keep swapping the paint in the cup. I've no doubt a third airbrush would help even more, but that's a huge extravagance I can't afford!
Yep, I am going to do a full video on it soon.
I went to watch this literally as my golden retriever ate all the garbage in my office lol
Just assembling my mangler squigs. How convenient!
Awesome.
Great video as always Vince! Just out of curiosity, which of the new battletomes will you cover on WW first?
Stormcast are first up. :)
Thanks Vince
np, always happy to help.
10/10 video very good doggo.
She'd happily sit there for hours. :)
Doggo AND Larry the ogre? Magnificent :)
This was jam packed with all the hits. :)
Never used or seen Kimera paints in person but that’s like super bright. Almost like a ink, how is it’s consistency out of bottle, thin or think. Great video always.
It's very thick out of the bottle. I love it, it's such an intense red.
Buying Tiefling Minis tomorrow because of this!! Hot!!🔥👹🔥
Awesome, love Tieflings. Planescape is my original home.
awesome videos thank you.
Thanks, always happy to help. :)
Great video. For a colder environment (underwater / moonlight) would you substitute the sunny skin tone with an ice yellow and purple shading? Or go more towards a rakarth flesh and keep the highest highlights sunny skin?
Well, I always warn against those types of settings for anything except display pieces, as they don't really sell, they are often viewed under normal warm lights and your brain can't resolve it. Now, that being said, yes, I would go to something like Ice Yellow or even Glacier Blue, and the purple shadows.
@@VinceVenturella thanks Vince. Sounds like a challenge which is most welcomed.
Nice video. Thanks. The Kimera red is pigment PR170. The Liquitex color is Naphthol Crimson. But I don't own Kimera so I do not know if it is an exact match in color.
Your golden is adorable 🐶
Came for the hobby tips. Stayed for the dog.
I usually show up for the dog. ;)
Squig’s back on da menu boyz
You know it.
So, Vallejo Sunny Skin Tone will do just as well, here? Red is still somewhat of a bear for me to highlight, so this video came in handy. The crap phase is something I'm well acquainted with, believe you me!
Yep, any brands paint in that same tone will work fine.
Hey Vince, any chance you could showcase the trasparent acrylics from pro/monument? Pretty curious about the black.
I have them, I will see what I can do. :)
Puppy!! Woof woof WOOF! 🐶🥰🐶
She'd sit there forever.
@@VinceVenturella she a good girl! I like her be mum of my puppies 🥰🐶
Maybe I have missed it but what glaze do you use between the "half steps"? Is it always the original red or do you somehow thin down the previous color blend?
Just thinned down the 1/2 steps into a glaze.
Could you please make a video about painting pale/ albino skin. I'm having a hard time painting my orks like you rekommended earlier 😱🙃 plzz
Sure, I will add it to the list. :)
@@VinceVenturella i look forward to it.
Hi do you matt varnish your reds? I had similiar result to yours then sprayed matt and now everything looks really low saturated. Great video btw.
I do, but it can dull the shine. One of the tricks is to use a really, really pigmented red or ink, that will dull less. You can also mix a little satin varnish into your matte varnish for a slight sheen, that will help.
Geart video ! huge puls for dog
They will have to come around more.
You are the best 👏👏👏
Thank you, always happy to help. :)
I'm currently painting a dragon and plan to sketch the highlights and shadows in then filter with red ink. Would you recommend building the highlights and shadows with more grey/white or orange/yellow/white?
You can do either, but I always prefer ivory or warm red with a small amount of dead white at the very top. That will give you a nice powerful warm red.
Any tips on painting cool and warm whites? I'd like to paint some of my mantic armada stuff, but I couldnt get it right. I wanted the basillien ships to have a clean, cool white and the empire of dust to have a more weathered look. I'm so rusty!
Actually any tips on a decent range of paints? heavy indecision on what set to pick up. (Most of my paints dried out)
So for paint ranges, something like Pro Acryl would be my recommendation, that or Vallejo or AK 3rd gen - all great paints.
Now, cold white - ua-cam.com/video/d0wWzjluaxM/v-deo.html
Warm White - ua-cam.com/video/VxSm90uQNH0/v-deo.html
There are many more videos in the playlist on white, hope that all helps. :)
Theme for a future video... how to paint a golden haired good(est) boy.
There you go. :)
Aw, what a good dog.
Yep, she would happily sit there for hours. :)
Hey Vince! You commented what you're doing up to the glazing step and then started discussing red and I got lost. You didn't mention later steps. I think I've seen some wet blending but I'm not sure. More information is needed. Thanks a lot!
Yep, basically, just futzing back and forth. I glaze down, then make a new mid-step, then glaze and repeat.
@@VinceVenturella Thanks a lot!
Anyone know where I can order Kimera paints? Can't find them anywhere
I got mine directl y from Kimera, but they are in stock intermitently.
That ogre really looked like fel-orcs from Warcraft
There you go.
your dog is adorable
I'll have to get them in videos more. :) - She's a good one for sure.
I keep being impressed by Kimera paint but it's hard to get and specifically The Red is sold out everywhere. Is there an acceptable substitute for that red from another more accessible brand like Vallejo?
Sure, Pro Acryl Pyrrote Red is pretty great. Really bright.
@@VinceVenturella Thanks for the tip!
Feels lime this exact same tecnique would work like a charme for greenskinz… do you agree? Also, would you be comfortable to replace sunny skintone with GW Ungor Flesh? They seem pretty similar on camera but i’ve never seen sunny skintone in person to do a compatison.
As always, infinite thanks for what you do for all of us and the hobby in general!
Sure, any color in that range will work just fine. :)
The Red!
Chevelle starts playing...
There you go.
What would be the closets Citadel laing for sunny skin tone please?
I honestly couldn't tell you unfortunately, I don't use citadel paints too often, but any warm skin tone that looks like tan caucasian skin will give you this result.
How many layers of paint is on Larry these days? He's starting to look a little heavier than before. I'm sure he likes that though.
Oh so many, I've never stripped him.
Larry looks like he is red with envy.
Indeed. :)
Vincent I'm working on a Jean Grey for Marvel crisis protocol can you use the same technique for her hair thank you always enjoy your videos
Absolutely, though you'd want to glaze over the whole thing.
Here is a video - ua-cam.com/video/XwUf5JBO40M/v-deo.html
Would this work with other skin colors? like green for example?
Absolutely
Have been a fan of your channel for a long time and it's one of my favorites. Any change that you will be upgrading you camera gear somewhere in the near future? I feel like the readability of your content could be much improved. I remember you telling me that you don't like to monetize you channel, but if money is a issue, I am sure people would be happy to sponsor you. If you don't know how you could improve your camera setup I am sure there are many fellow UA-camrs who could help you out.
The camera is very high end, it's not the camera. :) - It's the user. That being said, I have been reading up and I think you'll see improvement over the coming months as I dial things in.
Watching this video and the part where you put initial highlights made me think... I have a project soon of DOK snake ladies, and I was wondering what primer to use. My goal is green scales and pale caucasian skin tone. And looking at this made me think - could I get away with priming with dark red, like Dragon Red from army painter? I remember from previous video you said red primer is great for green, but could it be a decent one for skin too?
p.s. Love your videos!
Absolutely, it would work fine as a base for your zenithal.
This seems like it would be well suited for an airbrush glaze.
Absolutely
Could the same be done for blue or green? Highlight with that Caucasian skin tone? Or are those colors too cool for that?
Also for blue, what color would you use for the shadow? Purple?
100% - these videos will help you out.

I love painting red coloured skin like a squig. But I always bite the brush in half.
Yeah, they're bitey. ;)
I use the same process for red cloth
Fantastic! It would work fine there.
Is this the sign that I should buy those Morat models?
Seems right to me.
Love your beautiful doggie
Shes a very good dog. :)
is the procedure substantially different when instead you paint a classical caucasian skin? Because I feel also highlighting skin tones has the same pattern (i.e. you need to push the contrast a lot and then tone it down with blends), and in particular the 'ugly phase' problem - which I face a lot especially on Ogres for some reason.
Edit: Now that I think about it, correct me if I am wrong, you have used that ogre miniature to show a number of different techniques, also related to skin tones - I remember a video about blends, but you never painted a typical caucasian skin tone on a ogre on video from scratch, except for the weekend challenge that you were rushing, so maybe that's why I do not fully understand the difference :). Maybe that could be a good reference!
Btw, your work here is amazing, learned a lot!
"ugly phase"
@@Rustmonger omg lol ahhaha you're right
Yep, it's all the same principal. Skin is effectively satin and needs to push the contrast, but also have variation of hue. I've painted skin as part of a few videos.

Good. More dog pls x
I'll get them in more. :)
That's a huge cat on your lap.
Don't insult my poor girl. :)
Kimera kolors still out of stock. Sadge.
Yeah, it's a shame.
Vince, fella, do you speed up the painting sections of your videos in editing or are you really able to paint a higher quality miniature than I can, even though you appear to spend a few minutes painting... and mine will take me days (actually weeks but days when I add up the hours)?
Please, for my sanity, be speeding up the painting section!
I run the painting at 1.25 speed. :) So it's slightly faster, but it's also just years and years of practice. :)
That dog be CHONK
I actually just found out she's like 10lbs under weight. She's just very furry. :)
I suppose your next "it" color will just happen to be Duncan Rhodes' new range no one has...
Could be, but only if it's a good paint and color. I don't generally use things that aren't good. :) (Also, btw, just in case you're worried, there are many alternatives to this red, Pro Acryl's REd is also wonderful and widely available). :)
Instructions unclear, all I remember is dogo :p
That's fair.
I DEMAND ! ok Im begging more Dogos pls :)
I will see what I can do. :)
