One of my childhood dreams, dragging down the trolly poll and let it rebounce back to the wire. Fun video Luke! I am fascinated by the streetcar at New Orleans and I hope to visit there.
@@Luke_Starkenburg ua-cam.com/video/nRfHi_ezLeE/v-deo.html From my hometown. This video might be a bit old and I am afraid those trolley bus are gone already.
I love this. I'm a lifelong trainspotter. Every time I go to "Nawlins" I get so attracted by these old railcars that I don't get to see much else. Thanks for sharing this.
Y’all. I haven’t been in a way to long! January 2020 and then people lost their minds. I’ve been thinking it be amazing if there was an ASMR of just the streetcars. This is the closest thing I’ve seen. Thank you!
They apparently have machinery so advanced that they can make any parts that these old cars need. In fact, NORTA has built replica cars from the ground up.
Thats incredible!! I didn't know that. The New Orleans St Charles Line streetcar system is so incredible, like a working museum! I hope it never gets modernized!
@@Luke_Starkenburg I found out that a few years ago, NORTA began running some of their Riverfront cars on the St. Charles line, making the entire streetcar system ADA compliant for the first time!
Incredible video Luke of the New Orleans, Louisiana- St. Charles route streetcar. Lots of different perspectives. Love the shots from the various neighborhoods. The streetcar & the joggers 🏃♂️ and dog 🐕 walkers seem to co-exist well in this streetcar space.
Patrick Kinney thank you! I’d love to go on a warm day and jog the route for a few miles. It seems like a good way to work out and watch streetcars at the same time!
Luke Starkenburg - Hi Mr. Starkenburg. Can you send me an email address for a question about an attribution for an 8 second clip from this video? Many thanks.
It's humorous to me how rickety and clackety the St. Charles cars are compared to the Canal and Riverfront cars which are almost silent (and air conditioned)!
I love the old St. Charles street cars much more than the modern Canal and Riverfront cars. In the more modern cars, the air conditioning system is so noisy, and in the St Charles streetcars, you can get fresh air by having the windows open! It's so quiet when stopped because there are no noisy fans running.
@@Luke_Starkenburg except for the air compressor for the brakes chugging along under the floor. But the St. Charles cars are very romantic riding along after dark on a gorgeous Summer night when it's not so hot outside...we did it last week.
I volunteer at the Connecticut trolley museum, we own car 836 from this very route. She is my favorite car to operate apart from Montreal observation car 4
Had NO IDEA there was this vast system in NOLA !! I thought it was a small back and forth straight away only, along a grassy center of a main Blvd. (Charles ?) as that's usually all we see on broadcast TV here and there.. This has blown me away; the amount of rail running hither and dither...Thank you. M, # 318
Urban VIII in the first shot, he is taking down the pole at the back of the trolley. In the next shot he is putting the pole up in the front of the trolley. This is the end of the line so the train is reversing direction.
That’s where the tourists are expected to be venturing in, meanwhile next time I’m going back, I’m going around other parts of town to get videos of fire and police responses for my channel.
Great video! Looks like I’ll FINALLY get to NOLA end of April! (2 - 3 days) I’m trying to figure out which line is the most scenic and how many miles long is it? (If that’s not too much to ask) Our plan is to hop on at the beginning, take it to the end, then walk back so we can really appreciate all the sights. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. ☺️
The St Charles Streetcar line is pretty long, 13 miles or 21km long. The streetcar runs pretty slowly so if you get a nice window seat, you should be able to see the sights pretty well. I would get out and walk around Tulane University and walk around the park. I would also walk around St Charles and Louisiana and walk to St Charles and Jackson Ave. There are some great mansions around that area, lots of great old architecture.
If I would go back, I would try to take the St Charles Streetcar line to the end which is S. Carrollton at S. Claiborne Stop. Then I would take Uber (8 minute drive) or the 90 bus to Canal + Carrollton where the Canal streetcar runs. If you make it to the Museum of Art Stop, walking around the park is great with the ridable live steam scale train. I'm not sure if the miniature train will be operating in April though.
How do thely change to a different track, when there is a side track that veers from the main track they are on? Is the driver stiring the streetcar to follow which track they want to crossover to?
There's a movable rail that guilds the streetcar. (Look at 0:44). Some are motorized, spring loaded (at 1:44), and manual (4:30). For this they use a metal rod.
@@raygeorge9233 Yes sir, but only on the motorized and manuel. The spring ones only move as the streetcar crosses it and they spring back to their set position. For the motorized ones there is a trigger on the wire a streetcar length away from the switch. When the streetcar goes through the trigger accelerating (using it's pole) that triggers the motor that's hooked up to the switch. For the manuel they use a metal rod to move the rail.
New Orleans has a pretty good transit system. As a kid, I didn't even realize schedules existed. I just knew that if I stood at a corner, eventually a bus or streetcar would show up. Sometimes more than one - hahahaha. I didn't learn to drive until moving away.
Those are really beautiful trolley cars. Are they running on standard gauge (4' 8 1/2") or wider gauge? To me, for some reason, the tracks the trolleys are running on look wider than standard gauge - in some of your footages. I LOVE the classic, vintage design of the 900 series trolley cars, they're a marvel to look at. 🚎

James Wong at the beginning of the video, when the operator puts the trolley pole up, it makes a cool electrical “click” sound. Very cool!
This is at 1:30, when the pole is raised and it makes the cool sound.

Nice traction motor growling and air pump sounds.
It’s so uniquely wonderful!
I love this line. The seats flip when you reverse direction, by the end of the line I was the only white guy aboard but folks still smiled at me
I didn't know that!

Try Bourbon Street as well next time, especially at night

Os muitos bondes do Rio foram vendidos para EUA, será que tem algum deles nessa cidade.
@1:21, what is he doing, taking the power pole down and putting it back up?

Earlier you can hear the slapping sound of the seat backs being pushed so that they face in the correct direction
I like it how a fire truck interrupts the shot at 4:03

A couple of things i noticed straight off is there`s hardly any litter lying about and no graffiti in the city centre.
