In this video we take a look at the hotly anticipated Fw 190 A-8 from FlyingIron Simulations. FlyingIron always seem to get it right and this is no exception. We take the Butcher Bird from North Weald Airfield to Duxford and see what she can do....and whether I can land her for the first time.

A great review, I was lucky to fly with Dick Forbes at a South African gliding club in the 80’s, he was one of 4 RAF pilots that were selected to form No.1426 (EAC) Flight responsible for the testing and evaluation of enemy aircraft on 21/11/41 and they were based at RAF Collyweston. Eventually they had 7 Me109’s, 4 FW190’s, 5 Junkers 88’s as well as an Me110 & 410, Heinkel 111, Henschel 129 and Fiat CR42. It was their job to travel around the country giving displays to other RAF squadrons and advice on how best to engage the enemy. Their first captured FW190 was delivered unserviceable and had to wait for a cylinder block to be acquired from a downed aircraft in the Middle East before Dick could test fly it on 24/10/43 whilst still in Luftwaffe markings and preferred it to the Me109.
Karl-Heinz Hirsch flew at our sister club 30km away, he learnt to fly the Me109F with the Luftwaffe. As part of his training he spent time at Rechlin where he test flew captured allied aircraft such as the Spitfire IX and Mustang. He fought on the Eastern front in Me109F’s before returning to Germany to finish off the war flying the Me262. It was a real privilege to know two WW2 fighter pilots who both test flew the other side’s captured fighter aircraft.

Great video and what an aircraft this is, No regrets on this pre-2024 purchase as its that good. Re: Hiding the prop is something that VR Pilots seem to do a lot.

@@AlphaIndigo thank you my friend. Yes it’s really great fun. Nice to buy an addon and have no regrets! Thanks for explaining the prop hide feature. That rings a bell now.

Hiding the prop is invaluable in VR, especially if you're using things like motion smoothing/fps generation which can cause very weird artifacting and interaction of the prop with the envirornment.

I’ll have to dig out my index and give it a go. Many thanks.

…..the dog is on the TV….perfect German :-)😂 and FUG Sprengung means selfdestruct of radio equipment type FUG25. So that it could not be captured by the enemy.

@@hausnm fantastic! Thanks for confirming, that’s what I thought it was.🫡

Hiding the prop is a feature I wish more planes had. Most prop animations devs do in MSFS are that classic strobing/flashing effect which is great if you're simulating a camera but terrible if you're trying to simulate the human eye. The boring truth is most props IRL appear as a slightly opaque disc with no real texture or movement. But that's not cinematic, is it? That being said, it doesn't appear overdone in the FW-190

@@canadiancaptainmoustache yes I think I know what you mean. Some prop discs in the sim can be quite ‘intense’

@@Dreamsofwings Yes indeed. I personally use the VR friendly Multi Pass mod (even though I don't fly in VR) which covers a lot of planes and makes the props more realistic.
Oh and great video. Thank you for the detailed explore of this bird.
