Ah, been years since I've done that... used to sail lasers and butterflies in the all-lake regatta, Walloon Lake. Best times of my life. I was tiny back then, so I had to practically let my head brush the waves to keep it upright.
this is steven cockerill sailing. This sailing is as good as it gets... unless you're one of the best sailors of the world you should just shut up and enjoy this fine sailing
@gpcast Yes, but in heavy air, you could compromise the gooseneck in a blow if the vang is to loose. Tightening it will give you a flatter sail & less twist IMO.
when your sailing upwind in heavy air, if your not able to keep the boat flat you can depower the sail by: 1: cranking on your downhaul 2: cranking on your vang (your boom should make a smiley face shape) 3: and hiking like hell remember a flat boat is a fast boat and 145lbs is a pretty good weight for radials hope that helps =)
Yeah I never said it was easy, but it can be done. When you are under recommended weight, you have to work that much harder at keeping the boat flat, and pay close attention to tuning. Honestly, I never noticed a lot of difference between a radial and a full rig, as long as the boat was set up correctly. Lots of tension on the outhaul, vang, and cunningham are important.
Alot of footage is of Steve in the Boat Whisperer DVDs. Havent found heavy enough wind i cant sail in yet. Lasers really are amazing. You got to be fit though.
Im 10stone and sail a full rig and can handle it in pretty much anything the weather decides to throw at me, just takes determination, good boat handling and stamina.
Youre not supposed to let your but go for a swim! (1:41) Outhaul may be a bit loose. The sail foot should be drum tight in heavy air. (2:46) I dont ever keep the vang too tight. When Im going to weather, pulling in the main will pull the boom downthats the time you really need it. I never took those multiplier vangs too seriously. Looks like he has some big time whether helm. (1:52) Maybe he should reef. But thats just my opinion after Laser sailing since the 70s
Very nice video and sailing/surfing I made a stern mount for my Topper like the one in the vid, but its not as good as the one in your video. How/where do you get this mount?? Its the one thats connected to the traveler eyes and passes behind the boom. How do you make it?
lol i love lasers but toppers are fun 2 sail some times we hbit each other i ours head on when we go sailing and make each other capsize but lasers rock
well when you say the sails foot should be tight how can you do that without having the vang tight *which i would recomend*and never reef a laser *if you can* because it disrupts airflow which yes it shoud but to an extreme and can disbalance the boatand since you've been sailing them since the 70's i dont know if you race but you should and least me open to newer tech like a multiplier vang
That looks so fun! I sail with my dad in lightnings, but i want to buy a laser over the summer and start learning how to sail them
I have a lser too. I love it. Easy to use, great fun! Best boat.

gotta agree. laser sailing is definately extreme in the breeze

It is laser Radial. you can tell by the blue triangles at the corner of the sails.
Many grown men sail Radial at ladder events.

great sensation, but extremly hard to control on hard winds of lvl 4-5.Great Video

Full rigs aren't that hard to handle. I used to sail one when i only weighed about 110 pounds, and was able to keep it under control in heavy air

NICE I sail sunfish I cant control lasers to easily
too damn right. not enough vang means you cant tack! well thats what i find in a topper feva and yacht

Nice cam views and stuff but I'm struggling to see the extreme in this...or actually in laser whatsoever.
