  • I try the cordwood axe micro challenge to bushcraft a replacement handle, to simulate how you would manage if you were deep in the wilderness with a broken axe. I also review the Otter Anchor Knife or Anker Messer (carbon steel). An excellent folding knife.

Of all the bushcrafters and wannabe bushcrafters doing videos on YT you are by far my favorite, Vinnie. Watching one of your videos is like taking a little vacation. I almost feel as if I’m in nature, while I’m watching. Plus, I’ve learned a lot.
You ACTUALLY DO bushcraft and REALLY put gear such as knives, to the test! I don’t like the hundreds of videos where someone takes a knife or other piece of gear, sits inside at a workbench, turns the knife this way and that while they yak away about how they like or dislike this or that feature. What can I learn from that?? Vinnie gets out to the woods and shows you how it’s done! So that, by the end of one of his videos, you KNOW how that knife or whatever, behaves ON THE JOB.
Plus I like to watch your little dogs Dyson and his friend (not remembering his name at the moment). They are such loyal friends and seem to have so much fun on these outings.
One more thing these videos make me want to visit Ireland! My daughters were there a few summers ago and they said it was one one of the most beautiful places they’d ever seen!
    Thank you Vinnie

Kind words indeed! Thank you so much. The mad thing is that I don't regard myself as a Bushcrafter ☺ Bushcraft in recent years has become silly and as you said many are just shopping channels nowadays. There is no other name for them. My other dog's name is Mary Sue. Nobody else knows because I might make a video on why I named her that ☺ Ireland is very beautiful......When the sun shines. When it is pouring with rain and everything is grey then its not so beautiful. Thank you once again for the kind words and thank you for watching 👍

I came here for the Otter review and took a lot more out of this video than I had expected, thank you. It's refreshing and pleasing to see a knife being reviewed which is actually being used as it was intended. I've seen too many show-and-tell video reviews with too much bark and no bite. You've gained a new follower Vinnie. Thanks again. (p.s. you may have just convinced me to buy an Otter!)

This Irishman works like a mule and speaks eloquently like a perfect gentleman. A humble giant of a man capable of crafting many things with only a pocket knife.
This is an outstanding channel with the best content.
Many thanks for the efforts put into these videos sir.
I daily carry a Victorinox swiss army camper and a Schrade Imperial Sodbuster pocket knife which see a lot of daily field use and homesteading utility.
And when we butcher livestock or wild game I prefer my Old Hickory brand butcher knife & Old Hickory brand chef utility knife which I made leather sheath for each.
I own numerous knives but these are my go-to knives.
I also have a Mora Companion Pukko style knife that I sometimes carry. It's an outstanding slicer but requires an occasional touch up with a scotchbrite pad to remove rust spots due to it's high carbon steel.
My wife has a Mora Bahco in stainless steel that's also a good slicer, very durable and excellent grip. It would perhaps better suit your damp climate in Ireland.
You make the very best knife reviews on UA-cam Mr Vinnie.

As for the Old Hickory Chef Utility knife, Boning knife and Paring knife you may be able to find handmade leather sheaths sold online that fit their blade lengths.
I made a leather swallow sheath for the Old Hickory 9" blade Chef /Utility knife. And made a neck knife sheath for my Old Hickory Paring knife (which I can field dress an entire white tail deer with it) .

"A lot of folks say you can't do Bushcraft with a folding knife on you tube. ..."

Well Vinnie, I think you have shown that willow is good for more than just cricket bats, that piece has held up really well for green wood.
You are one of the few You tubers who really uses a folder rather than relegating it to food prep and pencil sharpening, I particularly liked seeing you scrape the haft smooth. I have always used my folders like that but so many people now seem to think a 4mm (or more) dedicated fixed blade bushcraft knife is the only way. Even the old Richardsons shell knives would stand up to that abuse for a fair while, we certainly abused them as kids.
I bought a QSP Worker about three months back, a modern take of your Otter Anchor knife, it has a 3mm thick ram's foot blade which is about the max for practicality, in N690 and it holds an edge and slices well no matter what I do with it, it is a lock back rather than a slip joint but I prefer that to most of the modern liner locks, after 3 months I can recommend it, I paid around the same price as the Otter goes for I think, €56.00.
That was a great video, I really enjoyed it, stay safe and well Vinnie.

@@vinniesdayoff3968 I find the Worker very comfortable to carry with the pocket clip, I am still planning on adding an Otter Anchor to my kit though, I like the carbon steel they use and it's a classic design that just works.
I found a Spanish made version of the Otter at a flea market in Valencia, bought it for €6, it was covered in tar and looked very old, after a clean up and a little strop it was perfect for working with around the house and garden. The blade wobbles a bit but it's probably got as many years left in it as I have.

@@vinniesdayoff3968 As far as I know willow is hard and dent resistant, a good bowler can deliver the ball at something like 100MPH as far as my memory from school goes, never liked playing cricket or watching it. Hurley is a lot more interesting and ash interests me a lot more than willow, ash is one of the most versatile woods there is in the British Isles, you can even make tea from the leaves, wine from the sap and pickle the seeds, makes good furniture too.

Nice work Vinnie. I do some silversmithing, and when you're soldering, you protect parts you don't want to heat up with some cooling gel. A couple years ago, I broke the head off an ancient sledge hammer. Recently, I needed a small bench anvil, so I chucked the head in my fireplace and burnt the end of the old handle out. Let me tell you, I thought that sledge head would never cool down once it heated up. Anyway, works a champ as a small bench anvil. I actually had to smack the thumb stud back on my Buck 110+ folder cuz it just fell off one day when I was using the back of the knife as a ferro rod striker. I put the good thumb stud against the little bench anvil, set the loose thumb stud back on the other side of the blade, and whacked the hell out if it with a big old carpenter's hammer. No damage done, and it seems to have repaired the issue permanently.

And they have learned only from a certain faction on UA-cam. I know their comments on folders are nonsense because of the lifetime (like your good self) I have spent using them. I hope you and yours stay safe and happy too Richard. Are you still on the island?

vinniesdayoff I agree one must be careful what they take away from any social media. I understand a solid piece of steel is stronger than 2 or 3 pieces of steel connected by a pivot point, but how “strong” does one need a knife to be?
A year or so ago I watched a video testing various types of locking knives. A Buck 112 (the 110’s little brother) was one of the knives. They clamped the blade in a vice then hung weights from the handle until the knife broke. The 112 withstood the pressure of 350 lbs. (the maximum they had) with no ill affects.
That is 115 lbs. more than I weigh, when am I ever going to put that much force on a knive? The simple answer is that in my 70 years I have never needed to do that.
Later I discovered your experiments building shelters, making tools and fire with all sizes of folding knives and rediscovered their usefulness in true day-to-day woods and survival tasks.
I have a few very nice fixed blade knives, some expensive and many not so much so. I also know that I could build a shelter, make a fire, clean a fish, or field dress small game with my Victorinox Farmer because I have done it. It is a shame people try to convince us we cannot complete these tasks with a folding knife.
Do I have a puukko with a full length rat tail tang in my backpacking kit? Yes, I do. What goes in my pocket every day? A folding knife. Which knife do the odds indicate I will have with me in unexpected hard times - the folder. Does that worry me? No, it does not.
      Take care my friend.

Yes, the smaller sheep's foot blades I have in knives such as the Stockman are outstanding but rather than the Belgian/British army knife (and we know their limitations) I still won't get a dedicated, larger sheep's foot blade. Will have to think on that as this Otter looked pretty handy.

That's a tough one David. When I started this channel I had decided to get a "good" knife for myself before some nonsense law made it impossible. I seem to have gathered a little collection. I keep them in a drawer and I just grab one when I need it. I mostly pick one of the smaller knives (like this Otter, an Opinel or even the Rough Rider stockman which gets a fair bit of use). The Buck 110 I carry in the nylon pouch (horizontal) and you don't know it's there but the hassle of threading it onto the belt sometimes makes me pick another. I use the GEC Hayn' helper a lot. Good solid knife with good steel and a good size. The Victorinox Farmer is another one I like a lot, and I seem to pick a knife around that size.

Vinnie, I have an idea for a future video on your unique channel. Your attempt to a Roman legionary's furca. In my opinion a furca is much more practical than Roycraft packframe. It is much easier to do. Also it requires less materials ( cord) and less efforts to do. I know that this 'furca idea' seems a little bit silly, but our modern cheap / expensive backpacks are not indestructible. Especially in a difficult terrain. Almost every 'big' bushcraft / survival channel has it's attempt on Roycraft packframe. But what about a furca? Roman legionaries used them with success

It may not have gotten hot enough to matter Darren. Do you notice the edge has gotten soft or is it losing it's edge very quickly? It seemed to work fine in your video. I don't know if you could get a fire hot enough with wood you would get lying around. It has to get cherry red ( it gets non magnetic too. A magnet stops sticking to it when it is at the right temperature) Maybe if you got a few dry pallets and had them broken up they might get it hotter. I have only dabbled a bit with heat treating. You would have to temper it afterwards. That can be done in an oven at home. I'd say unless you notice the edge is very soft it is probably fine.

Hello Vinnie. Great video, as always. I have a question. What do you think about Coronavirus? Do you consider any form of preparing? I think that lockdowns and social distancing will not make a huge difference after all... If 6% to 30% of infected people have not any symptoms, this is almost impossible to contain it without a vaccine. Check Hong Kong and South Korea. They experience an increase in new cases. Worldometer shows it very well. When lockdowns and social distancing will be over, then the second wave of infections will come. And it will be much, much worse due to the fact that the virus has a foothold in more than 200 countries. Please, do not underestimate this virus

    • @vinniesdayoff3968
      @vinniesdayoff3968  4 роки тому +1

I certainly don't underestimate it and I wonder if it is worse than they are saying. It is the early days of our infection here in Ireland. I think a vaccine is our only hope. They know they can't stop it with social distancing, they are trying to slow it so they will have enough of ventilators for the seriously ill patients. Maybe all this shows that the preppers are not crazy. Hand wash, soap, kitchen sanitisers, pasta, toilet roll, all very hard to find nowadays.

    • @Wojtek7060

@@vinniesdayoff3968 In my opinion, it is worse than they say. There were cases of reinfection after being recovered. There were cases of being a spreader after a month. There were cases of an airborne spread. Public bus, 4,5 meters away (no direct contact). The virus was there in the air for 30 minutes. There were raports of a single person who infected 90+ people. R0 without any intervention is crazy... Death is a tragedy but an economical outcome may be much more tragic
