Goldfish shouldn't be a common feeder fish, bait fish, or pet as they get way too large and destroying our waters! We need to look to smaller native fishes like rosy red minnows or shiners for these applications.

They lack natural predators and they can rapidly reproduce leading to high numbers of fish being present in the body of water. This could cause the entire ecosystem to collapse because nothing is eating the goldfish and the goldfish are eating all the food that the native fish would be consuming. When it comes to eating goldfish/carp I wish more people would. The truth is that the majority of Americans chose not to eat any type of carp because of all the bones within the fish and Americans consider carp a “trash fish” meaning it’s undesirable.

The gold fish are a very common bait for shovelhead catfish in Ohio. and many times people dump their extra bait when they are done. ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=goldfish+catfish+bait. Goldfish (Carassius auratus auratus) are part of the carp family but do not have barbells around their mouths. They vary in their fin configuration, coloration and in their body size, which is directly influenced by their environment. Their feeding habits, like native carp consists of trawling along the bottom of the lake or pond disrupting sediment that makes it harder for other fish to eat. At worst, goldfish will fatten up on the eggs of native species.

Goldfish are considered an invasive species once released into the wild. They are domesticated animals. Goldfish will quickly lessen the chances of survival of other fish species (thanks to their huge appetite), introduce parasites and diseases, and wreck havoc on the ecosystem.
