As a dsabled American visiting Spruce Meadows during three days of the best equestrian sport I've ever witnessed, I longed for my country to adopt Canadian people's welcoming, accommodating nature, your sense of community spirit and that you are all in this together as one people. I wished I,'d been born Canadian, and that alot of your country wasn't so cooold.
Vikki, I'm glad you loved our Spruce Meadows. I can tell you as a disabled Canadian, very few places in Canada are as disability aware or accommodating as Calgary, Vancouver comes close. The rest of Canada unfortunately is mountains of stairs and other inaccessible features. We even have universities that refuse to accommodate disabilities. We only achieved a Disability Act last year, and it does not yet seem to be enforced anywhere. Also remember this particular facility is the elite of the elite, and guests are naturally treated as if we are at the finest hotel.
@@bl7817 The Americans With Disabilities Act went a long way to restore what should be everyone's right of access, but it has too many loopholes, such as schools bulit before a cut-off date are not affected, etc. Any business or service provider should know the Act's provisions, not use it in twisted ways to exculde my wheelchair or service dog. I carry a copy with me. My approach is one of education, not argument, and have cards printed by our departent of justice to give out. I've still had to file complaints formally regarding access to schools, hospitals and private businesses. Thank you for your response. A country wide law does help, but it takes peolple who live with it to point out the loopholes
