This is the only video I've seen so far that performs a more "elaborate" procedure when tightening/adjusting the nut cones, I though I had a damaged cones because I was only holding the nut cone while tightening the Outer nut only on one side and after that the wheel still had play, I had my LBS adjust it but now I know why.
Great thanks for the comment. I hope it helps for future reference. If in doubt an experienced mechanic is always a good investment but it is a fairly simple procedure once you have the hang of it.
since nobody wants to answer me,... i'll go ahead and ask you. I was told by somebody I trust that leaving a TINY amount of play was actually desirable,.. because it ensures that there is absolutely zero resistance/drag on the bearing. when I say tiny amount, I mean,.... when the wheel is re-installed, i can grab the tire and wobble the wheel side-to side about,..a skinny 1/16" max. undetectable when I ride, BUT I do NOT want to injure my baby. so,... is that too much play?? youre the tenth person I asked today.
Hey Robert, yes that is correct for the most part! In an ideal world you would need to adjust the cones precisely to ensure no play BUT... particularly on slightly older hubs this is near impossible. So in order to get fast rolling etc a tiny amount of play is absolutely fine provided the cones are correctly ‘backed off’ against each other and everything is tight. It’s fairly hard to answer as to how much play is OK, but if you cannot see the wheel moving excessively, more just feel is slightly when the wheel is off the ground that will be fine! I hope that helps, do feel free to ask if I haven’t cleared up your concerns 👍🏼
