I think your videos are awesome, and your set up is just fine. I just have an Insignia turntable which is a store rebranded ATLP60 hooked up to not much more than computer speakers. Being fanatical of picture discs, colored vinyl and 78s I am not an audiophile either. I just love interesting records. My videos are produced entirely inside of my phone using freeware apps. I notice we also selected some of the same music for background in our videos. I am a musician though- and my own music is used in at present just one of my videos. 🙂 keep sharing.

Couldn't agree more. The specs for some computer speakers are incredible and these days, the phone can do everything. There are some amazing free editing apps. I do struggle though doing edits on a phone as the screen seems a bit small for me to get a real feel of what I am producing. Look forward to watching your videos. So cool you can produce your own music. Amazing. Thanks for stopping by.

I was born in Hong Kong but my family moved to Calgary, Canada when I was 5 years old. The first few years in school were daunting because I didn't speak but a handful of words in English. This was in the late 60's and despite being one of the few non-Caucasians in the neighborhood, my childhood was relatively free of the racism of the times. My mom was into music (Cliff Richard and The Shadows, Petula Clark and Engelbert Humperdinck) but it was my grade 3 music teacher who introduced me to Led Zeppelin, Three Dog Night and The Guess Who. I credit my mom and Miss McKechney for the boxes full of LP's and CD's in my basement today.
I still live in Calgary but travel regularly abroad to spy on other countries. Will be in the UK next June. 😃

What an interesting background and how your mum and school teacher introduced you to various genres of music. Amazing you remember your teacher's name too. Happy spying! Thanks for watching.

@@retromusings Miss McKechney was the typical circa 1973 young blonde in a mini-skirt so she was unforgettable. Instead of teaching the curriculum she'd just play her own records in music class. I vividly recall seeing the risque album cover of Houses of the Holy for the first time. Soulful Strut was more recently done by Swing Out Sister with lyrics as Am I The Same Girl. Great song!

To be honest with you, I find a lot of those questions to be insulting. Since we're both big fans of vinyl records, I'd call you vinyl sister. If you're a big fan of the blues, then you're a blues sister. Unless you're playing your records on a suit case record player, it doesn't really matter what you play your records on as long as the sound quality of the system is good. It doesn't need to be expensive, just good. 😎

You have a good attitude about life. Questions like the ones you receive are often about fear of the unknown. Once they get to know you, I'm sure people understand that you're just a person trying to get through life like them. Almost all of my gear is used and vintage. I've repaired gear myself. I get really good sound out of my mid-range audiophile gear. After that, going higher only results in more money spent and diminishing returns. Whenever I introduce myself I’m asked where I’m from. I too was born in the UK but my mother, who raised me, is Colombian. I’m very proud of my mother coming over here and raising me on her own, so I’m happy to explain to people my heritage. If ever I’ve said England and they follow up with what is my heritage, I’ve always understood why people are asking and I’ve never taken it offensively. People are curious, when something looks or sounds different, people want to know why. Like I said, I’m proud of my mixed heritage, so being asked about it is a pleasure, not a horrible question. We’ve got to start being comfortable in who we are, our differences, instead of all trying to be the same thing and getting offended if people think we are different.

Indeed some questions are offensive, even if overall some can be explained (after all, UA-cam does not directly indicate the origin of the UA-camrs; regarding where you live, you could have been an English speaking person located in Asia). But, overall, this is the main problem with social networks: for every 100 people who like/watch a video, and who say nothing, there is one person who can make a mean comment. And these comments can hurt. In fact that might be my question: Why UA-cam? Personally I'm more active on Instagram, where there's also a sense of community when it comes to sharing/discussing music. Anyway, congratulations for your channel. Traditional TV is declining, and this is much more interesting to listen UA-cam channels like the one you propose here. And, it was nice to see the system; Pro-ject makes good turntables. All the music I have used are downloaded from the UA-cam Audio Music Library featuring licence/copyright-free music. and yes, Pro-Ject record players are respectable for sure. Just all depends how much people want to spend on their various models. Many thanks for stopping by.

I always pick up communist LPs when i see them at thrift stores - it's a lot of fun and I sometimes use them as kind of weird gifts for other vinyl collectors. I have only ever found soviet records, but it would be very cool to find a Chinese or other east Asian communist record.

Fun episode RM👍👍 My wife and I (we’re from Los Angeles) just came back last weekend from Budapest, Hungary. By chance we visited a small LP shop called the Wave. We bought 3 LPs, one of which is a 1967 pressing of Yves Montand. It was pressed in the former Czechoslovakia. Near mint condition too! Still getting used to the thinner album card stock on European LPs.
As a collector of vintage Luxman gear, you really gave me a good laugh when showing the Luxman TT and integrated stereo. $15,000, no problem😂 I own a nice pair of KEF 104/2 speakers (made in Great Britain) from 1984. They sound wonderful.
So do you get out to record stores and charity shops to buy your vinyl?
    Keep on spinning🙏🏻

    • @retromusings
      @retromusings  9 місяців тому +1

Budapest sounds fantastic. And yes, European lps can differ from the American issued ones in terms of manufacturing specs. Glad to hear you picked up some records on your visit and you fell for my Luxman gag and didn't hold it against me! Charity shops galore in the UK and when vinyl was "dead" in the early 2000s, the charity shops couldn't even give away the records. How things have changed. Thanks for stopping by and watching.

I grew up mainly exposed to Motown, old school soul music, all manner of jazz and hip hop. My music teacher in elementary school used to play Young-Holt Unlimited's music, especially their "Soulful Strut" song and George Benson's "Breezin" all the time. It was wonderful! And yes, seeing the European/UK versions of records is really interesting. Thanks so much for your encouragement with my channel. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for this video & providing some info on you. I have to say I thought you were broadcasting from the Bay Area (Cali) when you were talking about reclaiming records your brother had in some of your first videos, so I got that wrong. I noticed the nice old cameras in the backgound of your room. Just curious if that's also a hobby of yours with the music.

Hi. I was in San Francisco visiting family when I did that video about unexpectedly saving that big collection so you were not wrong at all. I have a very small collection of Rolleicords and Rollei Magic TLR cameras along with a few old Kodak ones that I picked up when I first moved to the UK. I really don't collect things anymore.I'm hoping to have a more simple clutter -free life these days. Many thanks for stopping by and watching the video. Hope to see you again.

Great video and very interesting answers. I should have watched this one before mentioning that I thought that you were in the States. I also have a 'very old laptop' which I make my videos on...I live in fear of it seizing up one day. I made a decision early on to use my own name as my channel name and so far I haven't regretted it, though I have had at least one 'hater' who's gone on to bad-mouth me on various platforms, including on Amazon when I had a book published. It's unbelievable how tragic some people are.

I, too, am very worried my old laptop that I use for editing my videos will pack in any day now. It's still running on Windows 7 and the dreaded blue screen has popped up a few times! Many thanks for stopping by and sharing your experience. Have a great weekend.

It makes me sad that some of your watchers have a bit of a case of "Moronism". Never let the ignorant tear you down - remember that their very speech destroys their credibility the moment the words escape.🧐
You do NOT have to apologize for that system.😁 If it delivers, it delivers. And Pro-Ject is a serious company.
I think your editing is excellent. I use Photoshop CS v1 to edit photos. It still works!

Where are you from? Where are you really from? The British will get it. Oh, yes! That was a story! Ha ha!
Your English is really good. Wow! My best friend is Canadian-born to Chinese parents. One of my dearest friends is the same. Born in Canada to Chinese parents. You know what? Their English is really good. Native level in fact! Phew! Some people haven't encountered many... people of Asian ethnicity? You look Asian so you must be from somewhere in Asia. Oi oi!
If I've been asked some interesting questions? Well, I'm Caucasian Canadian living in Japan. I used to get asked often if I was from America. Once even when I was wearing a T-shirt that said, "I'm Canadian" with the Maple Leaf on it - a present from my parents - a Japanese man asked me if I was from America.
On UA-cam, the strangest question I've been asked is if I am related to Lars Ulrich of Metallica.
